How To Perform Line Sizing?

Global A Potential Hub To Deliver Dynamic Professionals.

Line sizing is an important activity in process design, the primary requirement is to find an inside
diameter that will permit a certain required throughput at a given pressure drop. This usually
involves a trial and error procedure. A diameter is chosen and the pressure drop is calculated for
the required throughput. If the calculated pressure drop is too high, a larger diameter is taken
for the next trial. If the pressure drop is smaller than necessary, a smaller diameter is chosen.

Important Factors To Consider:

 Design Margin
 Velocity Limitation
 Pressure Drop
 Economy

To save time, line sizing can be carried out by excel tools or Software applications in conjunction
with Codes and Standards. API RP 14E is the recommended standard practice for Line Sizing.

Velocity Limitations As Per API RP 14E

Liquid Line

Minimum Velocity: 3 ft/sec (To avoid sand/solid deposition)

Maximum Velocity: 15 ft/sec (To avoid flashing of liquid)

Gas Line

Maximum Velocity: 60 ft/sec (To avoid noise / vibration)

Two-Phase Line

Minimum Velocity: 10 ft/sec (To minimize slugging)

Maximum Velocity: Should be less than erosion velocity

Please follow the below steps to determine the accurate line size by using Aspen HYSYS.
