SDS 2205 DATA VISUALIZATION ANALYTICS AND REPORTING

ASSIGNMENT 2

DUE DATE: 29th February, 2024 INSTRUCTIONS:

WESLEY ONSONGO SCT213-C002-0118/2022

ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS.

1) What is data visualization? Presenting useful data collected from research, for consumption
by the relevant audience in an easily understandable way. (can use charts graph plots etc.)

2) What are the basics of data visualization?

Representing accurate and objective data

Design should be easy for audience to understand

Should add value to the information

3) State four key pillars to effective visualization according to Noah Iliinsky .

Should have a clear purpose

Contains only the relevant content

Use the appropriate structure

Has useful formatting

4) Briefly describe the two types of data visualization.

Static visualizations-Has a single view of the dataset

Interactive visualizations-Has multiple views of the data set and user can shuffle through
them in slides

5) What are the application of data visualization in e-commerce?

Can be used to show market trends which can be useful in business strategies

Data can be presented to investors who can determine whether to invest or not
Data can be presented to customers to market the business and prove provision of quality
services

6) Explain three advantages of dynamic data visualization

Better understanding of the data-multiple views can show the full picture of the data and
enable enhanced understanding

Enables better decision making-different views of the data can influence different
decisions compared to one view

Contains more nuanced information compared to static visualization

7) There exists a variety of data visualization techniques that are best suited for different scenarios.

Discuss five data visualization techniques explaining when they can best be used.

1.Pie charts-display data as slices of a circular pie, where each slice represents a proportion of
the whole dataset. The size of each slice is proportional to the quantity it represents.

Best Use Cases:

Showing proportions or percentages of a whole.

Highlighting the distribution of categorical data.

Visualizing composition or distribution of a dataset.

2. Scatter plots-represent individual data points as dots on a two-dimensional grid, where

each dot represents the values of two variables.

Best Use Cases:

Exploring relationships between two continuous variables.

Identifying patterns or correlations in data.

Outlier detection and analysis.

3. Bar charts-represent data using rectangular bars of varying lengths or heights, where the
length or height of each bar corresponds to the value of the data.
Best Use Cases:

Comparing discrete categories or groups.

Showing changes over time for a small number of categories.

Visualizing frequency distributions or proportions.

4. Line charts-display data points connected by straight lines. They are commonly used to
visualize trends and changes in data over time.

Best Use Cases:

Showing trends, patterns, or relationships in time-series data.

Comparing multiple data series over time.

Highlighting fluctuations or seasonality in data.

5. Heatmaps-use color gradients to represent the magnitude or density of values in a two-

dimensional matrix. Darker colors typically represent higher values, while lighter colors represent
lower values.

Best Use Cases:

Visualizing spatial patterns or distributions.

Identifying areas of concentration or density in data.

Showing correlations or relationships between variables in a matrix.
