Double Jaw Vise
Introduction: The double jaw vise is a fundamental tool
used in various woodworking and metalworking applications. Its
ability to securely hold workpieces in place allows for precise
cutting, drilling, shaping, and other processes. This mini project
aims to design, manufacture, and assemble a functional double
jaw vise suitable for [workshop type, e.g., home workshop,
light-duty metalworking].
Design Considerations
Jaw Design
Size and Shape:
o Consider the intended use:
Woodworking: Wider jaws with smooth or
slightly serrated surfaces to prevent damage to
wood.
Metalworking: Narrower jaws with deeper
serrations for a stronger grip on metal.
o Maximum clamping capacity:
Jaw width should be sufficient to accommodate
the largest workpiece you plan to clamp.
Jaw depth should allow for clamping objects of
varying thicknesses.
Jaw Inserts:
o Consider including removable jaw inserts made of
softer materials (wood, plastic) for delicate
workpieces.
P age |5
Material Selection
Vise Body:
o Cast Iron: Most common choice due to
affordability, strength, and vibration dampening
properties.
o Steel: Provides superior strength and rigidity but is
more expensive and susceptible to rust.
o Ductile Iron: Offers higher strength and impact
resistance than cast iron for heavy-duty applications.
Screw:
o Steel: High strength and wear resistance are
crucial for smooth operation and long lifespan.
o Stainless Steel: Offers corrosion resistance for
use in wet environments
Jaws:
o Steel: Provides excellent strength and durability for
metalworking applications.
o Cast Iron: Affordable option for woodworking, but
may dent or wear with heavy use.
o Hardened Steel: Inserts on jaws for extra
gripping power on hard metals.

Mechanism Design
The most common mechanism for applying clamping
force in a double jaw vise is the screw and handle:
A threaded screw translates the rotational motion of the
handle into a linear force that pushes the movable jaw
towards the fixed jaw.
The screw pitch (distance between threads) determines
the clamping force achieved per turn of the handle.
o Finer pitch = more clamping force with smaller handle
movements (ideal for precise work)
o Coarser pitch = less clamping force but requires
fewer turns for faster clamping/unclamping.
Alternative Mechanisms (Less Common):
Rack and Pinion: Uses a gear mechanism to convert
handle rotation into linear movement of the movable jaw.
Offers faster clamping but may be less precise and require
more complex manufacturing.
Choosing the Right Mechanism:
Consider the trade-off between clamping force, speed of
operation, and desired level of precision based on your
intended use.
Screw and handle mechanism is simpler to design and
manufacture, making it suitable for a mini project.

Manufacturing Processes
This section will detail the potential manufacturing
processes involved in creating each component of your
double jaw vise. The specific techniques used may vary
depending on your chosen materials, tools, and
workshop capabilities. Here's a breakdown of possible
processes for each component:
1. Fixed Jaw:
Cutting: Raw material (cast iron, steel plate) can
be cut to size using a band saw, power shear, or
water jet cutter (depending on material thickness
and available equipment).
Machining: Depending on the design, drilling and
tapping may be required for screw threads or
mounting holes. Milling could be used for creating
specific features on the jaw face.
2. Movable Jaw:
Cutting: Similar to the fixed jaw, cutting the raw
material to size is the first step.
Machining: Holes for the screw mechanism and
potentially slots for jaw inserts may require drilling
and tapping.
3. Screw:
Purchase (Most Likely): Due to the complexity
of thread creation, purchasing a pre-threaded screw
of the desired size and pitch is often the most
efficient option.
P age |8
Machining (Optional - Advanced): If
resources and expertise allow, thread cutting on a
lathe could be attempted, but this requires
specialized skills and equipment.
4. Handle:
Cutting: Raw material (steel rod, wood) can be cut
to length using a saw or lathe.
Machining: Shaping the handle for ergonomic
grip may involve turning on a lathe or grinding for
specific contours.
5. Base(Swivel Base):
Cutting: Similar to the fixed jaw, the base plate
can be cut from sheet metal or cast iron.
Welding: If a swivel base is desired, welding
techniques may be necessary to join the base plate
with the swivel mechanism.
Machining: Depending on the design, drilling and
tapping may be needed for mounting the vise or
swivel mechanism.
6. Anvil (Optional):
Purchase: Purchasing a pre-made anvil
attachment is often more practical for a mini project.
Machining: Creating an anvil from scratch would
involve complex machining processes like milling
and shaping, suitable for more advanced
workshops.
7. Finishing:
P age |9
Grinding: Smoothing rough edges and surfaces of
components using a grinder or belt sander.
Detailed Component Drawings
Present detailed technical drawings for each major
component of the vise. Include dimensions,
tolerances, and material specifications. This could
be hand-drawn or created using CAD software.
Drawings should cover:

o Movable Jaw

Safety Considerations
Prioritizing safety is paramount throughout the
manufacturing and assembly process of your double jaw
vise project. Here are key safety precautions to
emphasize in your presentation:
1. Proper Use of Tools and Machinery:
Always familiarize yourself with the operation
manuals and safety instructions for each tool or
machinery you plan to use.
Ensure all tools are in good working condition and
free from defects.
Never operate machinery without proper training or
supervision, especially for power tools like saws,
drills, or grinders.
Use the designated safety guards and attachments
for each tool to prevent accidental contact with
blades or moving parts.
Securely clamp workpieces to prevent them from
slipping or becoming dislodged during machining.
Disconnect power tools from the electrical source
before performing maintenance or changing blades.
2. Wearing Appropriate Safety Gear:
Eye Protection: Safety glasses or a face shield
are crucial to protect your eyes from flying debris or
sparks generated during cutting, grinding, or
welding,
Hand Protection: Wear sturdy gloves with proper
grip to prevent cuts, abrasions, or pinching hazards
while handling materials and using tools.
P a g e | 11
Hearing Protection: Earplugs or earmuffs are
recommended when using loud machinery like
saws or grinders to protect your hearing.
Respiratory Protection: If working with dust-
generating materials like grinding metal, a dust
mask can help prevent inhalation of harmful
particles.
Proper Clothing: Avoid loose clothing or
dangling jewelry that could get caught in machinery.
Wear sturdy shoes with closed toes for additional
protection.
3. Safe Handling Practices for Materials:
Sharp Edges: Be mindful of sharp edges on raw
materials or finished components. Use gloves and
handle them carefully to avoid cuts.
Heavy Materials: Use proper lifting techniques to
avoid back injuries when handling heavy
components like cast iron vises. Consider using
lifting tools or asking for assistance if needed.
Hot Materials: Allow freshly cut or welded
components to cool down before handling them to
prevent burns.
Flammable Materials: If using paints or
solvents, ensure adequate ventilation and keep
them away from heat sources to avoid fire hazards.
Proper Disposal: Dispose of scrap metal
cuttings or used grinding dust responsibly in
designated bins to avoid creating tripping hazards
or environmental contamination.
