Atam Karak
Atam Karak
Atmakaraka etc are obtainable from among the 7 planets viz the Sun to Saturn. Some say that Rahu
will become a Karaka when there is a state of similarity in terms of longitude between (two) planets.
Yet some say that the 8 planets including Rahu will have to be considered irrespective of such a state,
Among the planets from the Sun etc. whichever has traversed maximum number of degrees in a
particular sign is called Atmakaraka.
If the degrees are identical, then the one with more minutes of are and if the minutes are also
identical then the one with higher seconds of arc will have to be considered.
In that case, these three are called Anthyakaraka, Madhyakarka and Upakheta.
In the case of Rahu, deduct his longitude in that particular sign from 30. The Karakas will have to be
decided as above and as per further rules given below. Out of these Karakas, Atmakaraka is the most
important and has a prime say on the native just as the king is the most famous among the men of
his country and is the head of all affairs and is entitled to arrest and release men.
Atmakaraka: just as the minister cannot go against the king, the other karakas, viz, Putrakaraka,
Amatyakarka etc. cannot predominate over Atmakaraka in the affairs of the native. If the Atmakaraka
is adverse, other karakas cannot give their benefice effects (fully). Similarly, if Atmakaraka is
favourable, other karakas cannot predominate with their malefic influences.
If the King is pleased with the person, then the Minister, commanders and other officials do not dare
of any adverse action even though they are inimical. Similarly, all other karaks are in control of
Atamkarak.
The planet next to Atmakaraka in terms of longitude is called Amatyakaraka. Similarly follow one
another in terms of longitude are Dhratru Karaka, Matru karaka, Pitru karaka, Putra karaka, Gnati
karaka and Streekaraka. These are Chara karakas or inconstant significator. Some consider Matru
karaka and Putra karaka as identical. If two planets have the same longitude, both become the same
karaka in which case there will be a deficit of one karaka. In that circumstance, consider constant
significator in the context of benefice/malefic influence for the concerned relative.
Note: A total of eight Chara karakas (inconstant or variable significator) are suggested as under: I.
Atmakaraka (highest in longitude devoid of Rāśhis)
8. Stree Karaka (next to Gnati Karaka in longitude) The sage also suggests a school of thought which
considers only seven significator, treating Matru Karaka and Putra Karaka as identical. This section
thus counts only 7 Karakas.
Since some advocate the use of 8 karakas, Rahu is also added to the seven planets from Sun to
Saturn. The degrees traversed by Rahu should be counted from the end of the Rashi it is in.
If two planets have the same longitude identical to the second of arc, both of them will be qualified
for that particular Karakatwa or significator-ship. In that case, there will be shortage of planet for
Dara Karakatwa. The constant indicator Venus should then be considered in the matter of marriage
etc. as coming under Dara Karaka.
Note – As per the book of Sh. UK Jha ( Jamini Char Dasha) in one version of BPHS Word Atam adhik
has been used in place of Amsha adhik, therefore the char karaks need to be evaluated from D9 Or
D3 as they represent the soul of the planet ,so out of these two divisions he prefers D9 for Char
karaka evaluation.
His observation and solution seem to stem from a pertinent question that has not been answered by
any scholar till date. The question is that when slow moving planets like Saturn and Jupiter attain
higher degrees, they tend to be Atamkaraka for all born during this period that does not seem logical
and acceptable. For example let us assume Saturn is of 28 Degrees and all other planets are of lesser
degrees, Saturn will remain Atam karak till it attains 30 plus degrees d,so all born in this period will
be have Saturn as Atam Karak planet .
One finds shlokas on Karak, Argala, and Pada in BPHS itself. The method of evaluation of AK is based
on a planet achieving the highest degrees but the method seems in contradiction to the basic
fundamentals of Avasthaa's, any planet beyond 25 degrees is either in Mrit or Vridh Avasthaa.
Planets Like Saturn and Jupiter if they are in transit and transiting in degrees more than 25 degrees
will most necessarily be the Atam Karaks for the next few months for all and sundry barring the time
when the moon crosses over these planets in its transit. Is it possible? The planet that attains the
highest Ansh (degrees)is mentioned but it's not explained how to evaluate, Shri UK Jha in his book
Jamini char Dasha has suggested a possible logical method of evaluation using the planetary degrees
and its position in Navamsa.
How to derive Char Karaks as per Sh Uk Jha- As per his book Chara Dasha of Jamini
Mercury is of Virgo 23.22 and its Navamsa Leo begins from 23.20
so 23.22-23.20=2 minutes.
Mars is in Virgo of 16.54 its navamsa is Gemini it begins from 16.40 so Mars 16.54-16.40=Mars has
progressed 14 minutes into the navamsa sign of Gemini.
Jupiter is Leo 4.34 its Navamsa sign is Taurus. Taurus Navamsa begins at 3.20 so Jupiter's progress is
4.34-3.20=1.14
Sun is in Libra at 11.49 its navamsa is Capricorn, and its Navamsa starts at 10.00 so Sun's progress is
11.49-10.00=1.49
Note- Rahu and Ketu will not be considered owing to controversy related to their origin or signs they
are on.

(Dr suresh chander Mishra Jamini sutram)
If two planets that become one of the karaks have same attributes (degree, minutes and seconds)
then both are thought to be defunct and the result is deduced from fixed karaka or Sthir karaka.
If at birth the planets exalted, in MT or Own house, friends sign is in Kendra to each other then turn
out as fortune enhancing, in 10th they are even more auspicious.
Ascendant placed Karaka, seventh placed,11th placed or in Sun’s sign the planets are deemed to be
Karaks.
Own sign placed or exalted, in 10th then the planet is called karak and is thus auspicious.
A person born in ordinary family gains power, fame and becomes a leader of the clan if there is yoga
thus created by yogakaraka planets.
But a person born noble if has yogakarak planets in his birth chart will become a king therefore the
karak planets also act as per clan and birth environment.
