THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SETTING

Introduction

Modular Learning is being implemented Nationwide, since everyone cannot

avail the internet most of us are relying on this kind of learning. This strategy gave a

challenging role to the learners and even to the educators. No Good Morning and Good

bye teachers, but a pages of papers with a lesson to be read and understand and

questions to be answered. Let us say that the pandemic will last for years, and modular

teaching will be the only thing that can help us. What we must do is to is Focus and

have passion because this is the only way to learn and to fight the battle of this

pandemic.

Modular teaching is more effective in teaching learning process as compared

to ordinary teaching methods. Because in this modular approach the students learn at

their own pace. Modular approach helps to maximize the chances of student

participation in classroom in respect to fulfill the given tasks at the spot. Learners,

Teachers and Parents are the main character of this story. From teachers to parents

and parents to their children. Learning is hard and teaching is tough, but as long as we

have the chance to learn and teach we should risk ourselves to have the best thing that

everybody aims. And that is the Education.

Add more introduction, include discussion on BSMT Programs and the modular

learning in the school

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This section provides substantial writings relevant to the study. Also included are

some previous studies and theses that are related and important to the present study.

This is to indicate that the study has sufficient documentary basis which support the

present undertaking.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign literature

Foreign literature studies concerns the comprehensive research of literature in

the language of the country it was written in that includes the study of the regional and

historical circumstances in which it was written. While examining the author’s personal

history and views and the historical context the work was written in, researchers must

also imagine how and why the characters in the literature act the way they do to better

grasp the essence of humanity. Study of any foreign literature requires acquisition of the

language that literature was written in. For example, in order to study in the field of

American and English literature criticism, studies in modern English and business

English is carried out concurrently with other studies. Knowledge of the country’s

culture, thinking, and daily customs are also essential for understanding the background

in which a work was written. https://www.quora.com/What-is-foreign-literature

First, the concept of a learning community as promoted by Garrison, Anderson

& Archer (2000) and Wenger and Lave (1991) is emphasized. A course is conceived of

as a learning

Community. This community can be extended to a larger academic program. Second, it

is

Understood that interaction is a basic characteristic of the community and permeates

the model. The extent needed. Third, and perhaps the most important revision, is the

addition of the self-Study/independent learning module that Anderson emphasized as

incompatible with any of the Community-based models. In this model,

self-study/independent learning can be integrated with Other modules as needed or as

the primary mode of instructional delivery. Adaptive learning

Software, an increasingly popular form of self-study, can stand alone or be integrated

into other

Components of the model. The latter is commonly done at the secondary school level

where Adaptive software programs are used primarily in stand-alone mode with

teachers available to act. As tutors when needed. Adaptive software is also integrated

into traditional, face-to-face classes, Such as science, where it is possible to have the

instructor assign a lab activity that uses adaptive Learning simulation software.

This Multimodal Model of Online Education attempts to address the issues

that others, Particularly Terry Anderson, have raised regarding elements that might be

needed for an integrated or unified theory or model for online education. Whether or not

this model finds acceptance is not yet clear. It is hoped that this article might serve as a

vehicle for a critical examination of the model.

Local Literature

According to the Department of Education (DepEd), parents and guardians

perform the various roles in Modular Learning such as Module-ator, Bundy- clock, and

as Hone Innovator. As a Module – ator, they are ones to get and submit the printed

Self- Learning Modules ( SLMs )from and to schools or barangay halls at the beginning

and end of the week, depending on the agreement between the parents and the school.

As Bundy- clock, they must check their child’s schedule or workweek plan. Because of

the number of subjects or activities to be done, they must see that it is being followed

accordingly to to avoid cramming or delays in submission, which may affect the child’s

performance.

Camarao ( 1990 ) believes that the instructional materials were the answer the

needs of developing countries lie the Philippines with inadequate logistics and rapidly

increasing school population. Instruction could be individualized and from it, students

learn even when they are already out-of-school. He stated that the writers of the

supplementary instructional materials should state the objectives in terms of learner’s

behavior and skills.

According to Cesareno ( 1993 ), teaching school children to read an to learn

without the necessary books and others Instructional materials is like teaching them

how to swim without giving them the benefit of actual experience to swim in a body of

water. He added that the seriousness of the textbook problem strikes deep into the

educational program. The importance of textbook and the instructional materials is to

facilitate learning and to make teaching more effective.

Torres (1994) states that the art of teaching embraces the act of providing

adequate resource materials rather than mere dissemination of information. The

classroom therefore must be made a place in which every student can perform the act

of delivery. Sufficient instructional materials should be provided to the students to

ensure meeting of concepts. Learning is a process wherein the learners are involved. A

learner learns from what he/she feels and what he/she thinks . Personal experience are

learning that are complete and lasting.

Salazar (2001) emphasized that mathematics deals with abstract which are

difficult to teach and learn that is why classroom instructions should be backed-up with

varied instructional materials. To meaningfully develop concepts and principles, the

teacher needs manipulative and concrete materials. In most instances, the teacher

performs many varied roles and from these, it is evident that the teacher is the one

responsible for creating the best possible conditions for learning mathematics. To cope

with these varied roles, the teachers should have a wide range of instructional materials

to support him/her in the performance of his/her

Foreign Studies

The study generally intended to reckon the previous and present condition of

senior tourism students with regards on their foreign language class. Specifically, it

described the profile of the professors teaching foreign language; determined the senior

tourism student’s performances on their foreign

language class; assessed the teaching strategies used by the professors; tested the

significant relationship between the performances of the students to the teaching

strategies used; and lastly, proposed an action plan to help tourism students in the

studyof foreign language. The researchers used the descriptive method of research,

with one hundred seventy-eight (178) respondents composed of all senior tourism

students who are enrolled in foreign language class. The result of the study revealed

that the professors who are teaching foreign language are 61 years old and above,

masters degree holder, 10 years and above, with a unit of 21 and can speak Spanish.

Also, the students are able to speak and comprehend Mandarin, French and Spanish.

The teaching techniques used by the professors in teaching the language was giving

and evaluating student’s performance more often. Moreover, the performances of the

students in foreign language are affected by the teaching strategies used by the

professors. And a proposed plan was formulated to improve foreign language subject of

the study.

Foreign language subject is one of the new offerings of some universities in the

Philippines. Since it is a new subject it cannot be avoided that some may become

anxious in taking it. This study ought to know if there was a significant relationship of

foreign language anxiety and classroom performance among college students. This

research utilized descriptive- correlation design, with 109 respondents from the

University of the Immaculate Conception. Through the questionnaire adapted from

Horwitz, Horwitz &

Cope‘s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) it was found that

the students’ foreign language anxiety was moderate. It was manifested in their prelim

grade that their classroom performance was satisfactory. It was also revealed that sex

and program don’t have anything to do as regards to the foreign language anxiety of the

respondents. Lastly, the study showed that foreign language anxiety has a significant

relationship with students’ classroom performance. It only means that students find

social evaluation and apprehension on academic assessment as anxiety-provoking

stimulus since it had correlated with their classroom performance.

Learning of English as second and even foreign language has been stressed

out in all levels of education. Thus, teachers and researchers have been focusing on

describing externally observable behaviors oflanguage learners, followed by attempts to

label categorized strategic behaviors and link them to language proficiency. This

descriptive correlational study aimed to describe the extent of learners’ use of the

language learning strategies (LLS) and determine its relationship with the English

proficiency test performance of college students (N=82). The Oxford’s Strategy

Inventory Language Learning (SILL) and a standardized College English Proficiency

Test were the main instruments of the study. Results showed that memory,

metacognitive, cognitive, compensation, organizing and evaluation and affective

learning strategies do not significantly affect students’ English proficiency test

performance; whereas sociallearning strategies is a strong predictor of students’ English

proficiency test performance. This research

Local Studies

According to Chavez (2003), the basis of the aforementioned findings the

following conclusions are hereby formulated: (1) The first year students were weak in

Plane Figures; (2) Supplementary instructional materials on Plane Figures was

developed; (3) The supplementary instructional materials in Mathematics was found

acceptable by the school administrators and the mathematics teachers; and (4) The

students performed significantly better in the post-test as compared the pre-test.

From the findings of the study of Garcia(2006), the following conclusion were

derived: (1) The test items in the achievement test were not evenly distributed so that all

of the items concentrated under average indices of difficulty: (2) Students performed

poorly in exponential and logarithmic functions, and polynomial functions; and activity

materials with rubrics application in mathematics in exponential and logarithmic

functions, and polynomial functions were developed for use by 2 nd year college

students; (3) The activity materials with rubric application are acceptable to the

mathematics teachers and experts of the District Of Legazpi; (4) There is significant

difference in the result of the present and post-test.

On the other hand, Vistan et,..at (2015) has the following conclusions were

drawn: (1) Most of the teacher – respondents are female. It may be inferred that women

prefer to be Mathematics teacher than men do; (2) More than three- fifths of the

Mathematics teacher are married and therefore it may be concluded that to be settled is

still although in the said profession; (3) One of the desirable traits of being a teacher is
having the perseverance. Teachers have the initiative not just to benefit themselves but

also improve the quality of education being shared with the students. The respondents

may be commended for majority of them are Baccalaureate Degree holders taking their

Master’s Degree Units; (4) Mathematics teachers with ages 21 to 30 years old and 31 to

40 years old have equal frequencies and are the highest. Therefore , either age groups

are said to be given the same opportunity or both are driven in their chosen field; (5)

Forty- nine percent of the respondents are the maximum of eight (8) years in the

service. It shows than many are being interested to be an educator in Mathematics and

may be many aspirants are still in the process to be one; (6) The proposed Music

instructional materials in Mathematics by the researchers are acceptable in terms of:

subject matter, clarity, usefulness, and also in language and tune. Since it is acceptable

on all indicators, this instruction may be adapted fot future use in teaching the subject. It

may help the teachers to make discussion be more interesting for the students; and (7)

The difference between the level of acceptability of the proposed materials and the

profile of the respondents in terms of their gender, age, higher educational attainment ,

civil status and years in service does not affect the level of acceptability respectively.

Whatever the profile, it pointed out that the responses among the Mathematics teachers

were united to accept the proposed Music instructional materials.

Based on the aforementioned findings of the study of Gabasa (2006), the

following conclusions were drawn; (1) The topic Effectiveness of having Modular

Learning on Academic Performance in MPCF-LC were found of the students and

therefore they should be the ones to be considered for the development of the

enhancement materials in Modular; (2) The enhancement material that covers the
topics; Sample and Population, Frequency Distribution, Measures of Variation and

Standard Score. Approaches of Probability, Laws of Probability and Binomial Expansion

proved to be helpful to the students respondents; (3) The assessment of the Math

experts respondents proved to be Extremely Acceptable (EA) in terms of

objectives, content, language, and style and usability; and (4) When tested for significant

difference, it was found out that the result of the pre and posttest mean score of the

respondents was significant so we have to reject the null hypothesis that there was no

significant difference between the pre and posttest mean score of the respondents and

therefore students have learned.

Synthesis of the of the art

The above collection of both foreign and local studies provides information

that the effectiveness of the modular learning that being used. There are different kinds

of learning styles such as: online learning, face to face learning and etc. From the

findings of the study of Chavez (2003) the basis of the aforementioned findings the

following are hereby formulated. Also according to Garcia(2006) the following

conclusions were derived. The students performed poorly in exponential and

logarithmic function and polynomial function and Activity materials with rubrics

application in mathematics in exponential and logarithmic function and polynomial

function were developed for use by 2 nd year college students. Also based on the
aforementioned findings of Gabasa (2006), the following conclusions were drawn the

topic effectiveness of having Modular Learning on Academic Performance in MPCF-LC

were found of the students and therefore they should be the ones to considered for the

development of the enhancement materials in modular. The enhancement materials

that covers the topic sample and population, frequency and distribution, measures of

variation and standard score.

Gap to be bridged by the study

This study aims to determine the level of effectiveness of Modular Learning to

the 2nd Year BSMT Students in MPCF-LC. All studies have been made for the

researchers to have an idea regarding the effects of the learning modality from the

contents of related literature and related studies. There were general studies conducted

on the accomplishment of the effect of modular learning of students to fulfill the

necessity of an individual. This study is conducted to identify the effectiveness of having

modular learning to the second year BSMT students at MPCF-LC from one section of

the program to the other section that needs to be fulfilled.

Theoretical Framework of the Study

This research is anchored on the Dewey’s pragmatic theory of experience (1938)

which represents the philosopher’s attempt to explicate the process through which

human beings learn and grow.

Dewey argues that in order for an experience to result in growth (i.e., for it to be

an educative experience), it has to meet the dual criteria of continuity and of interaction.
An experience is also situated in a particular time and place. In sum, experience

resulting in growth depends on (1) the relationship between a current experience and

past and future ones, (2) both the material and social context of a person’s situation,

and (3) an individual’s interactions within the learning situation/environment. I will briefly

discuss all three of these dimensions of Dewey’s theory. beings learn and grow.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter present research design, source of data, population of the study,

research instruments, validation of research instrument, data gathering and statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

This study will be undertaken as qualitative research. It will use a descriptive

research design. This method classifies the study whose data substantially be used to

characterize the research subject and the respondents. The chosen method will help

the researchers have an in-depth understanding about the effectiveness of modular

learning in BSMT 2nd year student of MPCF LC.

In this study, the method of acquiring data was through the use of survey

questionnaire. The variables delineate were the socio-economic profile of the

respondent.

Sources of Data

The two sources of data that the researchers used for this study are primarily

sources and secondary sources of data. The answers that were gathered from the
respondents were the primary source of data, while the information that were gathered

from the internet, encyclopedias, and dictionary were the secondary sources of data.

Population of study

In this study, the selected populations are from the seven (7) sections of second

year BSMT students with a total of two hundred ninety-five (295) populations at MPCF-

LC. The researchers used the probability sampling, specifically simple random

sampling.

Research instruments
The researcher’ survey questionnaire with standard questions was applied to

gather the needed data. Research instrument has two types of question. Single-

selection questions where a respondent will choose one answer in the choices and the

interrogative questions whereas the respondent is asked to impart answers.

Validation of research instrument

The researchers made instrument was submitted to the research instructor and

subjected to an approval by the research committee.

Data gathering

After the validation of instrument, the authenticated survey questionnaire was

the main tool in gathering the needed data.

The researchers sent a direct message to the seven (7) skippers of each sections to

conform the maritime students that the researchers will conduct a survey that has a

minimum of ten (10) respondents per section. Then after the message was

acknowledge by the skipper of the section, the researchers gave them the survey

questionnaire to be received and answered by the second year maritime students.

Therefore the gathered data in each section will then be organized and managed and

properly interpreted by the researchers.

Statistical treatment of data

The taking after measures were utilized in analyzing the information

accumulated. The clear measures have given the basis for discussion and

interpretation.

The statistical tools that will be used in this research are frequency count,

percentage, and weighted mean.

Below is the formula for the weighted mean.
