Make a New Menu

If your site is new, or if you want to create a different menu from the one that was pre-
selected when you added the Navigation block, you can do that by following the steps
below:

1. Click on the existing menu on the page.

2. Click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the editor to open up the sidebar settings
area. This icon looks like a square with two uneven columns.
3. In the sidebar settings on the right, where it says Menu, click on the three dots/ellipses
icon.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the popup and click Create new menu.
Create a new menu in the Block Editor.

5. After you click on Create new menu, the existing menu will be removed from the page,
and a new, empty Navigation block will be added in its place.
6. The new menu will automatically be named Navigation or Header navigation. You
can change this name later in the Advanced section of the Navigation block settings.
7. Click the + Block Inserter to begin adding new menu items to the Navigation block:
8. When you’ve finished adding the menu items, click Save in the top right corner of the
editor to update the page and save your new menu.

Create a Menu in WP Admin

On sites with classic themes, you can create a menu using WP Admin by following
these steps:

1. Visit your dashboard.

2. Go to Appearance → Menus
3. Click the create a new menu link, and type in a name for your menu (to help you
remember what it is).
4. Click the Create Menu button.

After you make your first menu, you will notice that two new options appear:
 Auto add pages: If checked, new pages will be added automatically when you create
them.
 Theme locations: Allows you to decide where your custom menu will appear in your
theme. By default, your menu will appear in your theme’s main navigation area.
However, you can select a different location if your theme allows for it.

Adding links to external content

In the toolbar of the WordPress editor is a dedicated button to add a link to your content.
You can see it in the diagram below highlighted in red.

Place your cursor at the point in your content you want to insert a link and click this
button to open a basic link dialogue. This dialogue provides a text field to enter your
link, and a second text field to enter the text to display. This allows your link text to be
different from the link itself.

Below the text fields is a check box titled “Open link in a new tab”. If this is checked,
any time a user clicks on your link, it will open the link in a tab separate to the one they
are viewing your website in. This is a good idea for links to sites other than your own
as it ensure a user does not lose your website when viewing other content.

The shortcut method

If you already have text in your content you wish to add a link to, WordPress allows
you to highlight the text and simply paste a link from the clipboard. WordPress will
keep the text you have highlighted, but convert it into a link as indicated by it changing
colour and having an underline beneath it.

Adding links to existing content

You can also add links to your existing content by selecting “Or link to existing
content”. This will expand the dialogue to show suggestions on which content to link
to. You can add a search term in the search field as required, select your content and the
links and text will be filled for you.

With existing content, it is usually best to not open these links in a new tab for good
user experience.
Editing links in WordPress

If you wish to edit a link already in your content, you can place the cursor anywhere on
that link and click the pencil icon. This will open the same dialogue as mentioned in the
adding link section above. From there you can make the necessary changes as needed
and update your link.

Removing links in WordPress

To remove a link in WordPress, just like editing, place your cursor anywhere in the link,
and select the remove link button as show in red in the image below.

Add Links to Text
A link is a word or a group of words you can click on to go to another page. You can
also add links to images, buttons, and menus. This guide will show you how to create
text links on your site.

Create a Text Link

There are several ways to add links (also known as hyperlinks) to words in pages, posts,
and anywhere else that you normally edit text.

Method One: The Link Button

Adding a link via the Link button

1. Visit your dashboard.

2. Go to Pages or Posts and click any page or post to edit it, or visit the site editor
at Appearance → Editor.
3. Using your mouse or touchpad, highlight the text you want to add a link to.
4. A toolbar will appear directly above the text. Click the link icon that looks like the link
of a chain:

The link button

5. A text box appears where you can:

o Search for content on your site. Only published content will appear here, not
drafts or scheduled content.
o Type the URL of your link. This can be a URL on your website or any external
website.
o Paste the URL of your link. This can be a URL on your website or any other
website.
6. Press the return or enter key on your keyboard to save the link.
7. Click the Update button at the top right of the editor to save the link.

Adding a link to existing site content

Method Two: Copy and Paste

1. Copy the URL you want to link to your computer’s clipboard.

o You can do this by highlighting a URL, then right-clicking it and choosing Copy,
or by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + C (PC) or CMD + C (Mac).
2. In the editor, highlight the text you want to link.
3. Paste the URL directly onto the highlighted text. You can do this by right-clicking and
choosing Paste or by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + V (PC) or CMD + V (Mac).
4. This will automatically create a link. The highlighted text will now appear underlined
to let you know it is linked.
5. Click the Update button at the top right of the editor to save the link.

Pasting a link directly onto some text

Step 1: Create an Anchor Link

The first step is to select the section you want your readers to arrive at when they click
the page jump. To do this, we can create what is known as an “anchor” on the block
you want to jump to.

1. Click on the block you want to add the anchor to. Many common blocks support
anchors, including Paragraph, Heading, Image, Columns, and Buttons.
2. View the block’s settings in the right sidebar. If you do not see the sidebar on the right,
click the Settings icon in the top right corner to bring up the settings. This icon looks
like a square with two uneven columns:
The settings icon in the top right corner

3. At the bottom of the block settings, click on Advanced.

4. Type a word in the HTML Anchor box. This will become your anchor. Be sure to use
a unique word that isn’t already being used as an anchor somewhere else on the page.
If you want to use more than one word, it will automatically insert a hyphen (-) between
the words, like this: two-words:
Step 2: Link to Your Anchor
Next, we’re going to create the page jump link itself. Your visitors will click on this to
arrive at the section you created in step 1.

1. Type some text, or add an image, button, or navigation menu item for your readers to
click.
2. Select the text/image/button/menu item and click the link option in the block’s toolbar.
The link option is an icon that looks like the actual link of a chain, as highlighted here:

3. Type in the HTML Anchor you created in Step 1, starting with the hashtag (#) symbol.
For example, if you created an anchor named create-a-page-jump you would type your
link as #create-a-page-jump
4. Click Save/Update/Publish in the upper right corner of the editor to save your changes.

That’s it! You can now test your link on the public page to make sure the link you
created in Step 2 leads you to the anchor you created in Step 1. Note that the page jump
links will not work when you preview a page or post, so test on the published version.

Page Jumps in a Navigation Menu

You can create page jumps from your navigation menu that link to a specific part of a
page. This is common for sites that have a long scrolling homepage. Page jumps make
it easier for visitors to view the section of the homepage they want.

1. The first step is to create an anchor as the spot to jump to.

2. In your menu, add a new item that’s a Custom Link.
3. In the Text field, write whatever you would like the menu item to be called. This will
not affect the page jump.
4. In the URL field, write your anchor with a hashtag (#) symbol in front of it as described
above.
Adding a Page Jump in the menu
Keep in mind that a page jump like #my-anchor will only work on the same page that
the anchor is on. If you wish to jump to a section of a different page, see the next section
of this guide.

Jump to a Different Page

Page jumps don’t have to be used only for linking to sections within the same page.
You can use a page jump to link from one page to a specific area on another page.

The difference is that instead of linking just to the anchor, like how we wrote our link
as #create-a-page-jump in step 2 above, we would link to the full page URL plus the
anchor.

For example, if your page has the following URL:

https://yourgroovydomain.com/example/
and you create an anchor called unique-identifier on that page, then the full jump link
would be:

https://yourgroovydomain.com/example/#unique-identifier

Create a Back to Top Link

To create a jump link back to the top of the page:

1. Add an anchor to a block at the beginning of your page.

2. Lower down on your page, type some text like “back to top” or “jump to the beginning”.
3. Link that text to your anchor.

Editing and removing links:

To edit your existing links, go to your admin area > Links > Edit. From here you can
delete your links or change their settings. To edit a link, click on Edit which appears
when you hover over it.
