1 Trent is looking to hire a carpenter to build a desk for his office. He is trying to choose between
two carpenters. Both charge a fixed price for the materials required to build the desk (wood,
nails, etc.) and also an hourly labour charge for the time spent constructing the desk.

a The first carpenter’s total cost, $C, is given by C = 30n + 200, where n is the number of
labour hours.

i State the fixed price for materials, and also the hourly labour fee the carpenter
charges.
