Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 10 Self–Learning Module on Arithmetic

Series!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators both from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by
its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 10 Self–Leaning Module on Arithmetic

LESSON

In some cases, arithmetic sequences are being added up. We call this
arithmetic series. Arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic
sequence. The sum of the first n terms of a sequence is called partial sum,
denoted by Sn .
The amount saved on an ipon challenge that once trended on social media is
an example of an arithmetic series.
Example:
Find the sum of the terms of each of the following arithmetic sequence.
1. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25
This example is easy. Since we are just given the first 5 numbers, we can
simply add them.
𝑆5 = 1 + 7 + 13 + 19 + 25
𝑆5 = 65
Therefore, the sum of the first 5 terms of the arithmetic sequence is 65.
2. 3, 11, 19, 27, 35, 43, 51, 59, 67, 75
For this example, we could still use the addition of terms. However, since
there are more numbers, the chances of obtaining errors are high. So, for this case
we can use a formula in finding the partial sum. That is,
𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = (𝑎1 + 𝑎𝑛 )
2
where,
𝑆𝑛 = partial sum
𝑛 = number of terms
𝑎1 = first term
𝑎𝑛 = last term
So, if we will apply the formula in finding the partial sum, the number of
terms is 10, the first term is 3 and the last term is 75. Using the given, we have
10
𝑆10 = (3 + 75)
2
𝑆10 = 5(78)
𝑆10 = 390
The partial sum of the arithmetic sequence is 390.

3. 16, 13, 10, 7, 4, 1, −2, −5, −8, −11, −14, −17

Let us identify the given, 𝑛 = 12, 𝑎1 = 16, 𝑎𝑛 = −17. Now, we can apply the
formula to find the partial sum of the arithmetic sequence.
12
𝑆12 = [16 + (−17)]
2
𝑆12 = 6(−1)
𝑆12 = −6
Therefore, the sum of the first 12 terms of the arithmetic sequence is −6.

4. 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, … , 𝑎50

In this number, the given sequence has no last term. Indicated only are the
first term which is 2 and the number of terms that is 50. We cannot use the
previous formula for it needs the last term. So an alternate way is by using this
formula,
𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = [2𝑎1 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑]
2
where:
𝑆𝑛 = partial sum
𝑛 = number of terms
𝑎1 = first term
𝑑 = common difference
So, the given for this example are 𝑛 = 50, 𝑎1 = 2, 𝑑 = 4. We can now substitute
the given to the formula,
50
𝑆50 = [2(2) + (50 − 1)(4)]
2
𝑆50 = 25[4 + (49)(4)]
𝑆50 = 25[4 + 196]
𝑆50 = 25(200)
𝑆50 = 5000
So, the sum of the first 50 terms of the arithmetic sequence is 5000.

5. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, … , 𝑎41
Since this example is the same as the last one, we will still be using the
same formula. So, let us list the given. 𝑛 = 41, 𝑎1 = 3, and 𝑑 = 2.
Let us now solve for the sum of the first 41 terms of the arithmetic sequence.

41
𝑆41 = [2(3) + (41 − 1)(2)]
2
41
𝑆41 = [6 + (40)(2)]
2
41
𝑆41 = [6 + 80]
2
41
𝑆41 = (86)
2
𝑆41 = 41(43)
𝑆41 = 1763
Thus, the sum of the first 41 terms of the arithmetic sequence is 1763.
