Every effort has been exerted to locate and seek permission to use these materials from their
respective copyright owners. The publisher and authors do not represent nor claim ownership
over them.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:
This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner.
This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

entire module.
EXPECTATION
PRETEST
Directions: Read each statement carefully. Write the letter that corresponds to the
correct answer.
1. What is the sum of the arithmetic sequence 7, 10, 13, 16, 19?
A. 60 B. 65 C. 70 D. 130
2. Find the sum of the arithmetic sequence 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29.
RECAP
Simplify the following expressions.
1. 5 + (9 − 1)(3)
2. 4 [7 + (6 − 1)(5)]
3. 10 [(−3) + (−3) + (21 − 1)(2)]
12
4. 2
[2(5) + (12 − 1)(16)]
18
5. 2
[2(32) + (18 − 1)(−3)]
LESSON
In some cases, arithmetic sequences are being added up. We call this
arithmetic series. Arithmetic series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic
sequence. The sum of the first n terms of a sequence is called partial sum,
denoted by Sn .
The amount saved on an ipon challenge that once trended on social media is
an example of an arithmetic series.
Example:
Find the sum of the terms of each of the following arithmetic sequence.
1. 1, 7, 13, 19, 25
This example is easy. Since we are just given the first 5 numbers, we can
simply add them.
𝑆5 = 1 + 7 + 13 + 19 + 25
𝑆5 = 65
Therefore, the sum of the first 5 terms of the arithmetic sequence is 65.
2. 3, 11, 19, 27, 35, 43, 51, 59, 67, 75
For this example, we could still use the addition of terms. However, since
there are more numbers, the chances of obtaining errors are high. So, for this case
we can use a formula in finding the partial sum. That is,
𝑛
𝑆𝑛 = (𝑎1 + 𝑎𝑛 )
2
where,
𝑆𝑛 = partial sum
𝑛 = number of terms
𝑎1 = first term
𝑎𝑛 = last term
So, if we will apply the formula in finding the partial sum, the number of
terms is 10, the first term is 3 and the last term is 75. Using the given, we have
10
𝑆10 = (3 + 75)
2
𝑆10 = 5(78)
𝑆10 = 390
The partial sum of the arithmetic sequence is 390.
5. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, … , 𝑎41
Since this example is the same as the last one, we will still be using the
same formula. So, let us list the given. 𝑛 = 41, 𝑎1 = 3, and 𝑑 = 2.
Let us now solve for the sum of the first 41 terms of the arithmetic sequence.
41
𝑆41 = [2(3) + (41 − 1)(2)]
2
41
𝑆41 = [6 + (40)(2)]
2
41
𝑆41 = [6 + 80]
2
41
𝑆41 = (86)
2
𝑆41 = 41(43)
𝑆41 = 1763
Thus, the sum of the first 41 terms of the arithmetic sequence is 1763.
ACTIVITIES
1. Identify the first term, the last term and the number of terms.
1. Identify the first term, the common difference and the number of
terms.
If you are to make your own ipon challenge, how much will you save on the
first day, how much are you going to save in a day, and how much will you have at
the end of 30 days?
