STORM WATER SYSTEM

• Introduction
This section discusses the design basis and calculations of the storm drainage network.

• System Philosophy
1- The project area has not external municipality storm network to allow for external discharge.
In addition, it is not allowed to drain storm water out of the project area.

2- The system operation philosophy is to drain the storm water from reservoirs roofs by gravity to
a holding tank proposed in the basement floor through piping network. The flooded water on the
ground surface will be drained into the road gullies located in the edge of the internal plot area
of the project. The gullies drain directly to soak away via piping network.

3- rainwater pipes shall be provided on the edge of building, horizontal pipes are not allowed.

• Codes and Standards

• Qatar Construction Standards QCS 2014.
• Qatar Sewerage and Drainage Design Manual volume 3.

• Hydraulic Design Criteria for rain water

The holding tank is designed for duration of 24hrs of rainfall. In case of excess of rainfall than
24hrs duration the system shall be emptied by a private tanker.

The holding tank volume is calculated by considering the various parameters of plot like area
draining, rainfall depth, runoff coefficient and climate change factor.

Holding Tank design:

V = (A*C*D)
Where,
V = Effective Volume of holding tank
A = Area of plot draining
C = runoff coefficient
D = Rainfall depth for 24hrs duration (45mm) for 5 years of storm return period. As per Ashghal
Design Book V3.
Kindly see the reference below:
Design Report (B+G+M+3+P) MIXED USE COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

• Rainfall intensities

The Intensity Duration Frequency curves developed by the Qatar University using A.S. Bazaraa& S.
Ahmed formula are used for the pipe work design. Based on these curves the work of Bazaraa & Ahmed
derived the following formula for predicting rainfall intensity.

The Bazaraa formula is:

i = C Trm/ (t+d) n

Where
I = rainfall intensity (mm/hr)
t = storm duration (minutes) which is considered time of concentration
Tr= return period of storm.

And C, m, n and d are fitting parameters which to date have been given the following values:
C = 410
m = 0.206
n = 0.787
d = 10

The IDF curves based on the work by Qatar, outlining rainfall intensities (mm/hr) for varying storm
durations (5 mins to 24 hrs) and return periods (2 to 50 years).
Design Report (B+G+M+3+P) MIXED USE COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

Figure (1-1) shows the standard I.D.F curves as per Qatar Sewerage and Drainage Design Manual –
Volume III – Storm Water Drainage.

Figure (1-1): Standard IDF Curves for Qatar

• Storm Return Period

Table 1-1 is showing the Levels of Flood Protection Required for various areas in Qatar. The selection of
storm returned period is a function of the piping network performance referring to ASHGHAL design
manual, the following table illustrates the storm return period for different type of land use.

Table 1-1: storm returned period

Event Area
Parks, playgrounds, natural areas and minor
1 in 2 Years Storm
roads
1 in 5 Years Storm Low cost housing, major roads
Government, institutional and other official
development, technically sensitive property,
1 in 10 Years Storm
basements, power equipment, ….etc High cost
housing
1 in 25 Years Storm
High prestige or ceremonial developments

The recommended storm return period is 10 years

Design Report (B+G+M+3+P) MIXED USE COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL BUILDING

• Runoff Coefficients C:

Run-off coefficients are assigned to different categories of catchments within the Project area according
to Qatar Drainage Design Manual volume 3 as indicated in the below table 1-2.

Table 1-2: Runoff Coefficients:

Area C
Roads 0.85
Asphalt 0.85
Building Roof 0.85
Green area 0.30

• Pipe Material
UPVC pipes will be used for the gravity drainage pipelines, due to its availability and good
resistance to aggressive groundwater conditions.

• Pipe Diameter
The minimum UPVC pipe diameter used for connecting gullies is 200 mm

• Planning
The total area is required to be drained including roads and roof Building, Road gullies are
designed to collect the storm water and are draining via a gravity network system to holding
tank.

BASEMENT Submersible Pump & Sump Pit Calculations

Assumptions for water flows:-

1 From basements car wash drainage

- No. of cars
- 71 Cars in basement
- Assume 25 liter/ day for soft wash per each car.
- Assume 60% of cars shall be washed per day as a diversity factor.
- Volume of water due to car washing is = 71 x (0.60) x 25
= 1065 liters.
2 From domestic pump rooms
- Assume the maximum amount of water may flow from the rooms shall be due to
flange broken or any damage of the network which shall be more than over flow rate
anyway, and the pumps shall be in continuously working condition. Consider 50% of
pumps running for 1hr of time lapse required for repairing.

Domestic pump flow rate = 13.6 L/S

Volume of water @50% pumps running for 1hr = 24480 liters
Determining Sump Pump Flow Rate

Assumptions:

1- From basements car wash drainage

2- From domestic pump rooms

3- Rainwater coming from ramps is totally removed by trenches

Flow rate Analysis

* Total flow from 1 & 2 cases = 25545 liters

* If the total amount of water to be removed in 3 hours the pump flow rate would be 2.4 l/s

* If the total amount of water to be removed in 4 hours the pump flow rate would be 1.8 l/s

* Trench Data : Trench Average Height (m) 0.15

Pump Flow Rate

Design flow rate of the sump pump 4 l/s

Selecting Duplex operation of the the sump pumps, the flow rate of each one to be selected is 2l/s

Thus when water reach a high level in the pit, the second pump operate and the total flow rate would be 4 l/s

Minimum Required Sump Volume:

Vreq TminQ
=
4

Where: Vreq is the required sump volume between the start level and stop level of the pump

Tmin is the minimum pump cycle time

Q is the pump flow rate

Tmin 600 seconds

Tmin 10 min The total # of starts & stops / hour is 6
Q 2 l/sec

Vreq 300 Liters OR 0.3 m

The Total Volume for the sump with 2 pumps

Vtot = Vreq + (n-1) ΔH х S

Vtot Total sump volume between the start level and stop level of the pump

n total number of pumps

ΔH The constatnt height between the start up of two pumps (in
meters) S Surface area of the sump (in sq meters)

n 2
ΔH 0.2 m
S 1.96 m2

3
Vtot 0.692 m

The Total Volume for the sump with 2 pumps with cyclic alternation

Vtot = Vreq/n + (n-1) ΔH х S

n 2
ΔH 0.2 m
S 1.96 m2

3
Vtot 0.542 m

The pit is designed to have a sump volume of 0.7 m3

Area of plot (A’) = 4982sqm.

Total area of roof (A) =
3150sqm.
Rainfall depth for 24hrs duration @5years of storm return period (d’) = 45mm As per Ashghal Design
Book V3.

For roof: ‐
Total roof area (A) = 3150sqm
Runoff coefficient (C) = 0.85
Rainfall depth for 24hrs rainfall duration (d’) = 45mm
Volume of holding tank for 24hrs = (A x C x d’)
V2 = (3150 x 0.85 x 0.045)
V1 = 120.4cu.m

The provided capacity of holding tank is 131cu.m.

In case of excess of rainfall above 24hrs, the Holding tank shall be emptied by a private tanker by
owner.
