Chapter 1
The Problem

Introduction

Time management plays a vital role in improving a students academic performance and

achievement. Balancing school activities and personal responsibilities can be overwhelming for

the Grade 11 students. Understanding it how to manage time well is crucial for doing well in

school. Time management has a significant impact on the lives of the students especially for

those who are studying in the higher education institutions where there is no existence of parent

and teacher supervision. Razal et.al (2018). This research looks at the different ways Grade

11Gas students handle their time. The purpose of this research is to discover and understand

effective time management strategies use by Grade 11 Gas students, and to explore and identify

current time management practices, assessing their effectiveness, and also providing

recommendations to enhance time management skills. By exploring and analyzing the

effectiveness of various time management strategies within this specific context, It aims to

identify practical methods that students employ to manage their time efficiency, providing

improving not just for academic performance but it also for their personal responsibilities.

This research focuses on exploring and understanding the effectiveness time management

strategies among Grade 11 GAS (General Academic Strand) students. It aims to investigate

how these students manage their time in the face of increased academic demands and personal

commitments. The study delves into the specific challenges and dynamics that Grade 11 GAS

students encounter, seeking to identify strategies that contribute to successful time management.

By examining factors such as academic performance, self-reported experiences, attendance and

4

stress levels, the research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various time management

approaches. Time is a limited source if people do not arrange their missions with time and it is

important in our lives both at the practical and educational domain. Good time management is

essential if us to handle a heavy workload without excessive stress. By using time management

skill effectively, we can reduce work stress by being more productive. Balancing time

management is very important for Grade 11 GAS students. It helps them handle school activities

and personal things better. When they manage time well they can focus on studies, reduce stress

and get more done. It’s not just about doing well in school, it also teaches them to be organized

and ready for future tasks. Good time management makes learning easier and gives students a

sense of control and confidence in handling their responsibilities.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore the effective time management strategies for this specific

group of students.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following question:

1. What is the problem of the students in terms of:

a. Academic performance

b. Socio-economic status

2. How do students manage their time effectively?

3. What are the insights of the students in time management?

5

Scope and the Limitation

Identifying specific effective time management strategies and the challenges faced grade

11 gas students at in Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School, such as balancing academic workload,

extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. The participants would be limited only to

grade 11 GAS students of Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School and findings may not be

applicable to students from other grade, strand or school.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will benefited the followings:

Students. This study will help the students to attend their class regularly since this will

provide information about the benefits that they can acquire in attending school. This students

would be able to go to school on time. They could become more responsible.

Teachers. They could help each other in implementing plans in helping research

thus they can treat this problem objectively.

Parents and guardian. They could encourage the children to go to school it also to know

how their children behave at school likewise, this would give them the opportunity to help, guide

their children in leading with problems that may affect performances especially with regards to

their academics.

Future researchers. The conducted studies will further open doors for future

researcher to retime and expand of this study. This may serve as a source of information.

Review of Related Literature

Related Literature

Time management consequently involves taking conscious control over the amount of time

spent on specific activities. It is also exercised to increase productivity, effectiveness, efficiency

as well as effective scheduling of your time, goal setting, prioritizing and choosing what to do

and what not to do, delegating tasks, analyzing and reviewing spent time, organizing workspace,

keeping concentration and focus at work, motivating one’s self to work towards a goal (Fybin,

2012). A study of Adeojo (2012), stated that time management is not about getting more things

done in a day. It is about getting the things that matter most done. Time is that quality of nature

which keeps all events from happening at once. Time management refers to the development of

processes and tools that increase efficiency and productivity. According to Claessens, Roe &

Rutte(2009), time management is a method for managers to increase work performance

effectiveness.

Alghamdi, (2008) said that time management is very worthwhile issue during to being it a

key factor in any success at all levels of life and for that the term time management is strongly

associated with administrative work. Despite of its importance, it is never an easy task to

manage time individually and a need to specific qualifications along with many personal skills is

then a must. Let alone exploiting the available resources in order to meet the society and
7

individual needs at the same time and the ability to adjust with the present and future situations.

These may be the organization of tasks or events by first estimating how much time a task will

take to be completed, when it must be completed, and then adjusting events that would interfere

with its completion so that completion is reached in the appropriate amount of time (Sabelis,

2001). Achunine and Irondi (1995) explained that variables for time management has to do with

planning and scheduling activities, organizing tasks in a prioritized order and allocating time to

the tasks according to their order of importance and helping one achieve desired objectives. Time

management refers to the use of particular techniques such as ‘to-do’ lists or deliberately

planning activities, or to participate in training with the purpose of learning how to master and

use such a technique (Lakein, 1973)

According to Claessens et,al (2009) have defined time management as types of behavior

that differentiate people who do things on time, stick to deadline and spend little time on their

activities from those who are often late, pass deadline, spend much time on their activities and

waste time on unimportant matters. Time management is considered as an inclusive process that

is done through administrative functions which is deeply dependent on high personal talents and

skills so it can then produce positive effects to society and individual at the same time.

Nonetheless, all of that must be restricted to a specified period of time in order to make persons

adjust with present and future situations. (Alghamdi, 2008). The study conducted by Alsalmi,

(2008) that it is of importance to point out to the fact that the more the students is able to manage

time effectively, the more it fulfills its aims correctly in the right time. And for the sake of

effectiveness, one must give priorities to some tasks over the others in order to distribute the

sufficient time to get the best results, and effectiveness can be then measured by the quantity of
8

finished tasks in that specified time. A study of Alrheme and Almardeni (2014) aimed at

identifying the students' viewpoint about how to time in terms of planning, organizing, directing

and censorship and its effect on academic achievement as long as identifying the personal

variables effects on academic achievement.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework of this research study follows the input-process-output (IPO)

method, which helps analyze the relationships and transitions of variables. It consists of three

key stages: input, process, and output. In the input stage, the study focuses on three objectives:

Problem of the students in terms of, academic performance how do students manage their time

effectively. the insights of the students in time management . These objectives serve as the initial

factors that guide the research process. In process stage, the chosen research methodology

involves using a survey questionnaire as a data collection instruments. The survey questionnaire

allows to gather information related to the study’s objectives.

Lastly, in the output stage, the expected result or outcome of the study is the exploring of

GAS students at Marcial O. Rañola Memorial High School regarding the effective time

management for academic performance and personal responsibilities.

Theoretical Framework

The Pickle Jar Theory, also known as The Bucket of Rocks Theory or The Jar of Life

Theory, was developed by Jeremy Wright in 2002. This theory proposes that time is a finite

space with limits, analogous to a jar that can only hold a certain number of pickles (tasks and

responsibilities). Just as one must prioritize the placement of rocks in a jar to maximize space,

individuals must prioritize tasks and responsibilities to effectively manage their time. Time is

limited and finite, similar to the finite space within a pickle jar. Grade 11 GAS students at

Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School must recognize the constraints of time and make conscious

decisions about how to allocate it. Just as rocks must be prioritized based on size and importance

when filling a jar, tasks and responsibilities must be prioritized based on urgency, importance,

and personal goals. The Pickle Jar Theory emphasizes the importance of optimizing time usage

by efficiently allocating time to high-priority tasks.

The Alpen Method Theory, was developed by German economist Lothar J. Seiwert, This

theory proposes its preparing a defined to-do list at the beginning of the day, thinking about how

long each task will take, and then setting time slots for each item . this involves planning tasks and

activities in advance, setting clear objectives, and breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable

components. In the context of the study, Grade 11 GAS students can benefit from task planning to

organize their academic assignments and personal responsibilities.
