Application of Learning Tool Canva in the Performance Task of

Grade 12 HUMSS A

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Canva is a free graphic design tool website that allows users to create professional
quality graphics using a very intuitive, simple interface. Featuring a drag-and-drop format,
the tool provides templates for social media platforms, websites, and print distribution.
Additionally, Canva allows users to access over a million photographs, graphics, fonts, and
design elements. By combining these features within the program, users can use their
creativity to develop professional quality messaging. Designs can then be distributed via
different online, social media and print channels. In addition to using the website interface,
users can also access Canva via a free mobile app. Within the classroom, Canva can be used
to get students’ creativity flowing and allow them to design professional quality graphics with
little to no knowledge of the platform. This means instructors could assign a lab, provide a
brief tutorial of the platform, and let students get to work. Professional graphic designers and
website designers use Canva to create cohesive, creative designs that clearly communicate
key messages to their audiences. Therefore, having students learn how to use this tool may
give them a competitive advantage in the job market.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As technology continues to be integrated into the field of education, many students and
teachers turn to digital tools to enhance their learning and teaching experience. Among these
tools is Canva, a web-based graphic design platform. Canva has a positive impact on
students' reportings and projects. It increases students' motivation and improves their abilities
in writing classes. Structured feedback from supervisors using feedback forms positively
affects students' overall project performance in presentation and report Canva as a
technological tool helps art students with disabilities in communication, technology skills,
time management, self-direction, and regulation of emotions and behavior, leading to better
learning outcomes. Participation in out-of-curriculum project teams has been found to
improve various skills and abilities, including communication, collaboration, leadership,
scheduling, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for reporting and project work.
The presence of technology continues to be prevalent in our daily lives, especially in
Education. The use of technology has completely changed the Educational field by making it
more accessible and inexpensive, profoundly changing how students learn (Saykili, 2019).
While canva has already been around for a decade and several recently published articles
have proven that it is beneficial in Education, they hardly tackled the application as an all-in-
one tool for creativity and collaboration for student. One of the benefits Canva can take is in
doing interesting creative writing. This application includes many templates to help students
write their creative writing tasks more quickly.
The changing dynamics of today’s curriculum changes necessitates the need for
students to have multiple roles; competencies and responsibilities in order to create
interactive performance task that are creative and enjoyable. The goal is for technology to
make it easier to explore skills, particularly when it comes to improving the abilities of
students. Canva is a twenty-first-century learning management system (LMS) that is
adaptable, dependable, easy to use and designed to help students reduce their time in their
classrooms institutions (Utami & Suriyani D., 2021).
Canva is one of the solutions to increase students’ creativity by acquiring IT skills and
expressing ideas comprehensively (Andriyanto et al., 2022; Christiana & Anwar, 2021).
Canva has been viewed as a creative and innovative tool that can improve the teaching
learning process and help students develop their collaborative skills. Canva was used in the
class to enhance students' motivation through the practical digital application (Andriyanto et
al., 2022; Fitria, 2022). Students using Canva were argued more motivated and creative,
resulting in a fun and enjoyable classroom activity.
Canva may be used to help increase learning. According to Smaldino et al., (2015)
visuals in the classroom, including Canva, can serve several purposes including 1) creating
concrete ideas; 2) motivating students; 3) giving direct attention; 4) repeating the
information; 5) remembering prior knowledge; 6) making learning effective.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

According to Audi Yundayani et.al (2019). A growing number of language teaching

studies have started to consider the role of technology in teaching writing. Moreover, recent
work in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class has highlighted the importance of
introducing visual media in an effort to help students improve their writing skills. The present
study aims at investigating the effect of Canva on students’ writing skills. To this end, forty-
four Indonesian EFL students were selected and assigned randomly to two writing classes,
namely control and experimental groups. Before the treatment, both groups had a pre-test.
During the sessions of instruction, both classes were taught by adopting Communicative
Language Teaching (CLT) approach. However, in the experimental group, in order to help
students to explore their writing ideas, they were asked to use Canva as media of writing.
After the treatment, both groups had a post-test. Then, the number of writing errors made by
students from both groups were compared using ANCOVA. The results showed that students
in the experimental group had a significantly lower number of writing errors compared to the
control group, which confirmed the positive effect of Canva in improving students’ writing
skills.
According to Tira Nur Fitria (2022). This research simulates the use of Canva as media
to teach English and develop the creativity of the Informatics students in the English Working
Course at ITB AAS Indonesia. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. This
study has revealed that educators (teachers or lecturers) can use the Canva application to
teach English by creating materials for job vacancies, cover letters, job application letters,
curriculum vitae (CV), or resumes in English for Working subjects. In creating the material
for” Job Vacancy”, a template or layout of brochures, flyers, or announcements is employed.
Canva is very suitable for learning basic competencies of functional texts, including
functional texts to make brochures, flyers, announcements, letters, CVs, or resumes. The
stage is performed by editing the existing text using the Canva application and changing the
text with words requested by the teacher. It is expected that Canva can develop and grow
students’ creativity in digital designs by adding texts, images, or photos. Canva application is
conveniently practiced and suitable for Informatics students who want to learn simple,
creative, and innovative graphic designs.
According to Rena Eka, Siti Musarokah (2023). The use of technology in English
language learning can bring tremendous effects because it provides students with enjoyable
learning opportunities and facilitates the development of their English language skills. In this
context, the study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions of using the Canva application as
a tool for learning writing skills in the explanatory text, namely cause and effect in SMA
Negeri 11 Semarang in the academic year 2022/2023. The study was conducted using
qualitative research. The sample of the respondents was XI MIPA 6 with a total of 36
students. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. A survey technique was used to
collect the data by distributing the proposed questionnaire to the respondents through Google
Forms. A questionnaire was used as an instrument consisting of 3 indicators requiring 10
items to obtain data related to measure students’ viewpoints on the utilization of Canva in
learning writing skills. This study revealed that the Canva application proved to be a valuable
resource in assisting students in cultivating their writing skills and it is regarded as a user-
friendly resource since it can be conveniently reached via smartphones and personal
computers. The features of Canva empower learners to exhibit their creativity in writing by
using a wide variety of templates. It concludes that students can improve the quality of their
writing by using Canva as a technological medium in the 21 st century. Canva is a fascinating
and well-chosen application and can be viewed by students as a valuable and functional
learning tool to boost their writing.

An article written by Hasna Husniyah et.al (2023). Science and technology is one of the
things that becomes a reference that the times continue to experience development. Currently,
science and technology has experienced many improvements, especially in the world of
education. Utilization of science and technology in learning can be used as a medium for
delivering learning information effectively and efficiently. One of them is the use of Canva
media in the learning process. Which is expected to spur student motivation in learning,
especially in PAI subjects. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Canva media on
students’ learning motivation. This research is a quantitative research with quasy
experimental method, pre-test to post-test control-group design with data collection using a
Likert scale learning motivation questionnaire. The research sample was fifth grade students
at SDN Purwamekar consisting of one experimental class and one control class. The results
showed that Canva media had a positive effect on increasing students’ learning motivation in
PAI subjects, especially in the subject matter.

Local Literature

According to Pedroso John Erwin et.al (2023). As technology continues to be

integrated into the field of education, many students and teachers turn to digital tools to
enhance their learning and teaching experience. Among these tools is Canva, a web-based
graphic design platform. This qualitative descriptive study seeks to investigate the views of
students on using Canva as an all-in-one tool for creativity and collaboration. It was
conducted among eight (8) Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) major in Social Studies
students who were identified through a purposeful sampling technique. The students were
asked to write narratively in a written interview questionnaire based on Graham Gibbs’
reflective cycle that was created using Google Docs. The analysis revealed three (3) main
themes: unique features (user-friendliness, diverse applications, and efficient collaboration),
positive effects on creativity and collaboration (continued usage, enhanced skills, and
increased satisfaction), and drawbacks (application’s limitations and users’ limitations). The
results demonstrated that students have predominantly positive opinions of Canva. It enables
them to unleash their creativity, optimize collaboration, and produce visually captivating
designs. However, they also acknowledged that despite its user-friendliness and
comprehensive features, Canva has certain disadvantages that may come from the application
and the students themselves. Factors like overreliance on the application and weak
connectivity may pose a challenge to their design process. Nevertheless, Canva remains a
valuable digital tool for students in enhancing their educational endeavours.
