SYNOPSIS
This course prepares students as future engineers who will effectively interact with society
in their professional practices. Students will learn how to assess societal, health, safety,
legal, and cultural issues, and understand the consequent responsibilities relevant to
professional engineering practice. The project addresses SDG4 (Quality Education),
SDG3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
Additionally, the course will provide students with knowledge of ethics and awareness of
the need for diversity (WK9) to prepare them to better comply with the professional code
for engineers. Through hands-on experiences dealing with real-life community problems,
students will develop engineering problem-solving skills using the Design Thinking
approach.
Important Notes: Learning Management Systems used are u-Future and MT platforms.
Students must refer to the PPT notes related to the course or other relevant sources on
the Malaysian Legal System, Roles and Responsibilities of Engineers, Code of Ethics and
Professional Conduct for Engineers, Local and Federal Authority Regulations, and
Occupational Safety and Health Act, as well as the role and function of DOSH, NIOSH,
and CIDB, etc. The topics are delivered by professionals from industry through webinars.
COURSE OUTCOMES (CO)

At the end of this course, the students should be able to: -

CO1 - Engage with the community as a prospective civil engineer in solving problems involving
the civil engineering profession. (PO6).
CO2 - Comprehend the ethical and professional conduct that guide a civil engineer’s professional
practice and service to the community. (PO8).

LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO)

At the end of the ISP, the students should be able to:
LO1: Identify a specific community or communities that need help related to civil
engineering practices. (CO1-PO6)
LO2: Observe the selected community’s activities and engage with the community and
other related stakeholders. (CO1-PO6)
LO3: Apply critical thinking based on Design Thinking approach to identify and define
problem (s) that can be solved as prospective civil engineers followed by design/develop
solution (s) to the problem and get feedback from the community on the proposed solution
for further improvement. (CO1-PO6)
LO4: Adopt ethical and professional behavior that guides the professional practice and
services of civil engineers to the community. (CO2-PO8)
LO5: Present the ISP activities using various assessment tools required (Proposal to
HEP, progress reporting through discussion & final report, video montage & individual
presentation).

The specific tasks to be carried out for ISP can be referred to the project brief and rubrics
complemented by the Instructional Guidance (2024). The following table outlines the contents
