Bodies Of Revolution Introduction to slender body theory, cylindrical coordinates,
boundary conditions, pressure coefficient, Subsonic flow past a axially symmetric body
at zero incidence and solution for a slender cone.

1. What are different types of small perturbation Flows? Briefly explain with relevant
sketches.
2. Describe the subsonic flow past an axially symmetric body of revolution at zero
incidences.
3. What are cylindrical coordinates used of bodies of revolution and velocity potential in
cylindrical co-ordinates.
4. Derive Linearized perturbation velocity equation for subsonic, compressible and
irrotational bodies of revolution.

Unit 8. 08 Hrs.
Viscous Flows Derivation of Navier-Stokes equation for two-dimensional flows,
boundary approximations, laminar boundary equations and boundary conditions, Blasius
solution, qualitative features of boundary layer flow under pressure gradients, Integral
method, aspects of transition to turbulence, turbulent boundary layer properties over a flat
plate at low speeds

1. What is boundary layer theory? Explain laminar, turbulent boundary layer and transition
over a flat plate at low speed.
2. Explain briefly those parameters which encourage the transition from laminar to turbulent
flow on a airfoil.
3. Derive Navier-Stokes equation for 3D flow, in partial differential and non-conservation
form.
4. Derive the Blasius solution to find skin friction coefficient, boundary layer thickness and
Momentum thickness.
5. Define and Derive
i)Displacement Thickness iii)Momentum Thickness
ii)Energy Thickness
6. Find the displacement, Momentum and energy thickness for the velocity distribution in

the boundary layer given by Where u is flow velocity at a distance y from the

solid boundary=U at y= , is the boundary layer thickness. Also calculate the ratio of
momentum Thickness to displacement thickness.

7. For the velocity profile for laminar boundary layer .Determine the

boundary layer thickness, shear stress, drag force and co-efficient of drag in terms of
Reynolds number.
8. For the velocity profile in laminar boundary layer .Find the

thickness of the boundary layer and the shear stress 1.5 m from the leading edge of plate.

The plate is 2 m long and 1.4 wide and is placed in water which is moving with a velocity
of 200mm per second .Find the total drag force on the plate if for water =.01 poise.

9. Air is flowing over a smooth plate with a velocity of 10 m/s .The length of the plate is 1.2
m and width 0.8 m. If laminar boundary exists up to a value of R e=2x105,find the
maximum distance from the leading edge uptp which laminar boundry layer exists .find
the maximum thickness laminar boundary layer if the velocity profile is given by

,Take kinematic viscosity for air =0.15 stokes.

10. Air is flowing over flat plat 500 mm long and 600 mm wide with a velocity of 4 m/s .The
kinematic viscosity of air is given as 0.15 x10 -4 m2/s. Find i)The boundary layer thickness
at the end of the plate ii)Shear Stress at 200 mm form the leading edge and iii)drag force

on one side of the plate. Take the velocity profile over the plate as and

density of air is 1.24 kg/m3.
