1. Objective: The objective of this method is to describe the required standards and performance
criteria to be followed for HDPE 50MM DUCT Installation.

2. Purpose: The purpose of this method statement is to create awareness and communicate the
tasks involved in executing the procedures for HDPE 50MM DUCT Installation and to ensure
the compliance of these activities with the contract specifications, IFC drawings and with HSE
requirements. It is to guide and take precautionary measures and to safeguard traffic within the
area of work and possible environmental impact.

3. Scope: This method statement outlines the procedures for HDPE 50mm Duct Installation in
accordance with project specifications and approved drawings. It encompasses preparations
involved in the installation of HDPE 50mm Duct for underground electrical wiring.

4. Reference:
The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever applicable. In
case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment conforming to one group of codes and
standards.

5. Definitions and Abbreviations:

5.1 Raceways: Raceways include, but are not limited to, uPVC conduit, rigid metal conduit,
rigid non-metallic conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquid-tight flexible conduit,
flexible metallic tubing, flexible metal conduit, electrical non-metallic tubing, metallic
electrical tubing, underfloor raceways, cellular concrete floor raceways, cellular metal
floor raceways, surface raceways, wire ways, and busways.

5.2 Cable: Conductor with insulation or a stranded conductor with or without insulation
covering (single conductor cable), or a combination of conductors insulated from one
another conductor cable).

5.3 Conductor: Any carrier of electric current. In practical terms, a wire or cable is designed
to carry electric current. A conductor can be insulated or uninsulated, depending on the
application. Examples include wire, cable and bus bar.

5.4 Concentric Neutral Cable: A two-conductor cable consisting of an insulated wrapped in


a copper neutral conductor.

5.5 Duct Bank: A group of ducts or conduit usually encased in concrete in a trench.

5.6 Direct Buried: Also referred to as URD or underground distribution. Cable is laid in a
trench and directed to specific locations through the use of pad-mount transformers,
switchgear, centres, riser poles.

5.7 Insulation: Non-conductive material that is applied over a conductor (e.g. cable, wire) to
insulate a conductor from other conductors or ground.

5.8 Jacket (the outer covering of a cable): A tough plastic material that provides physical
protection for the cable. Jacketed cable protects against physical damage and corrosion,
thus reducing the risk of damage to the primary neutral.

5.9 Handhole: A subsurface enclosure which personnel may enter; handholes are for installing,
operating and maintaining underground cable systems.

5.10 Splice: The joining of two or more cables by connecting the conductor’s pair to pair.
5.11 Shield (Screen): A metallic layer usually in the form of a braid of foil surrounding one or
more electrical conductors to insulate them from electromagnetic interference.

5.12 Overcurrent: Any current in excess of the rated current of equipment or the ampacity of
a conductor. It may result from overload, short circuit, or ground fault.

5.13 Overload: Operation of equipment in excess of normal, full-load rating, or of a conductor


in excess of rated ampacity that, when it persists for a sufficient length of time, would cause
damage or dangerous overheating. A fault, such as a short circuit or ground fault, is not an
overload.

6. Responsibilities:

6.1 Project Manager: Will have the overall responsibility of the project for execution, quality
and safety. Also, he will maintain the planning progress and coordination of works with
main contractor.

6.2 Construction Manager: The Construction manager has overall responsibility of the
implementation of the method statement and to ensure that his team of engineers and
foreman are aware of this method statement and that all resources – human, material and
equipment’s are available to carry out the work as planned and without any delay.

6.3 Project Engineer: Become familiar with the method statement and quality & safety
requirements for the activity. Convey all technical data to the site engineer & to ensure
sufficient understanding of activities to be executed. Control productivity & quality of
work. Attend risk assessment meeting and follow up implementation of requirements.
Arrange the required resources to execute the work.

6.4 Site Engineer: The Site Engineer is responsible for carrying out the work as per the
approved shop drawings, method statements and for co-ordination with MEP sub-
contractor and to ensure that all MEP embedded items are in place, are adequate and that
all necessary inspection and testing have been carried out.

6.5 QA/QC:
6.5.1 Quality Control (QC) & Quality Assurance (QA) personnel will be assigned to
ensure to the quality control and quality assurance requirement of the works.
6.5.2 QA/QC personnel will inspect the work & produce all the documents attesting to
the acceptability of the works.
6.5.3 Contractor shall ensure to protect of ongoing & completed work from damage all
the time during construction work.
6.5.4 Conduct site quality awareness training periodically & prior to start of any new
activity. Training records shall be maintained.
6.5.5 The QA/QC Engineer is responsible to make sure the delivered materials are as per
approved material submittal.
6.5.6 Ensure that the work has been done as per the specification and approved drawings.
6.5.7 Ensure that the inspections are done as per approved PQP and ITP and offer works
for consultants’ inspection.

6.6 HSE Officer: HSE Officer is responsible to ensure that all safety precautions are in place,
and that all personnel on site are using the required PPE like Helmet, Gloves, Shoes and
Coveralls. All relevant permissions are will be ensured for the works.

6.7 Foreman: Follow up scope of work given by the Engineer. Understand approved shop
drawing, method statement and HSE requirements before execute the work. Assign
manpower, material and machinery for the scheduled work. Complete the work in the
planned/scheduled time period. Conduct the toolbox meetings regularly to the workers
before start the work.

6.8 First Aider:


6.8.1 To provide on-site first-aid treatment to employees at work upon incidents resulting
from minor injuries which would otherwise receive minimal or no treatment, or
which do not need treatment by a medical practitioner.
6.8.2 Ensure that the First Aid Box assigned is safe guarded and box kept at conspicuous
location.
6.8.3 Ensure that First Aid Box content is maintained and stock usage is recorded and
reported to supervisor.

6.9 Skilled/Unskilled workers:


6.9.1 Skilled workers:
6.9.1.1 Understand the work from foreman, study IFC drawing.
6.9.1.2 Arrange required tools, equipment and materials to complete the assigned
job.
6.9.1.3 Make sure all PPE has been worn and approved material is used.
6.9.1.4 Attend tool box talk to understand the scope of work and to know the risk
and hazards involved the job.
6.9.1.5 Complete the wok in given time period.

6.9.2 Unskilled Workers/helpers:


6.9.2.1 Assist the skilled workers to complete the work within the given time
schedule.
6.9.2.2 Attend tool box talk to understand the scope of work and to know the risk

7. Site planning and preparation:

7.1 Ensure All the Employees Attend Site-Specific Induction Covering Safety, Environment,
And Quality.
7.2 Acquire approvals and inspection for plant & machinery to enter inside the site locations
if any.
7.3 Any PTW for General works will be applied and obtained prior to works on site.
7.4 All environmental control will be established in accordance with the site environmental
plan.
7.5 Ensure that all the necessary clearances from the construction team are obtained prior to
start the work.
7.6 Check that the drawings and material submittals are approved and verify that the materials
are as per the approved by the engineer.
7.7 Check that HDPE 50MM DUCT are delivered pre-packed in standard quantities.
7.8 Inspect the HDPE 50MM DUCT stored on a reasonably flat surface free from any type of
damage.
7.9 Loading and unloading of HDPE 50MM DUCT should be carried out by proper tools and
equipment, to ensure safety and avoid damage of equipment.
7.10 Extra care should be exercised in handling HDPE 50MM DUCT to avoid damages.
7.11 Check work area is clean and safe to proceed for the installation of uPVC Ducts.
8. EXECUTION:
8.1 GENERAL:
8.1.1 SGC shall provide all materials, equipment and labor as deemed necessary to show
proper execution of the Work

8.1.2 Enclosures, equipment shall be protected during installation against entry of foreign matter
8.1.3 The aforementioned shall be vacuum cleaned both inside and outside before testing and
operating, as well as before repainting if required by the Royal Commission
8.1.4 All the Work shall be performed in a first-class workmanlike manner, in conformance with
the applicable codes and standards, the best electrical engineering practices and as per the
manufacturer’s instruction. Work shall be performed by skilled workers equipped to produce
satisfactory results in a safe and substantial manner so as to avoid undue stresses
8.1.5 Damaged equipment, as determined by the Royal Commission, shall be placed in first-
class operating condition or be returned to the source of supply for repair or replacement
8.1.6 SGC shall be responsible for the proper coordination of all phases of the Work and
equipment as specified herein, with the Work to be performed and equipment to be furnished
under the other Sections of the Specifications, in order to assure a complete and satisfactory
installation
8.1.7 SGC shall furnish and install all temporary electrical facilities, including lamps, required for
construction and safety operation. All such equipment shall remain the property of the
Contractor and shall be removed when permanent connections have been completed. If it is
determined during construction that the temporary facilities, as installed, interfere with other
construction operations, the Contractor shall relocate said facilities in an approved manner to an
approved location
8.1.8 No wire, bus or electrical equipment which is part of any of the permanent electrical
systems may be used for temporary electrical service during the construction operations.
Temporary connections shall be safe and in accordance with accepted practices
8.1.9 SGC shall be responsible for any damage to equipment, materials, or injury to personnel
caused by improperly protected temporary installations
8.1.10 All costs for materials and installation for temporary electrical facilities and energy for
their operation shall be at the expense of SGC
8.1.11 Electrical welders used in the erection and fabrication of the building and its equipment
shall be provided with an independent grounding cable connected directly to the structure on
which the weld is being made rather than to an adjacent conduit
8.1.12 After the installation is complete and properly adjusted, SGC shall conduct operating
tests. The various equipment and systems shall be demonstrated to operate in accordance with
the requirements of the specifications. Tests shall be performed in the presence of the Royal
Commission’s representative. The Contractor shall provide electric power, instruments and
personnel necessary for performing the various tests.

8.2 INSTALLATION OF ELECTRICAL CONDUITS:

8.2.1 Below Grade Conduit


1. The installation of below-grade conduit should not be avoided

» The direct buried conduits installed directly on earth shall be hot-dip galvanized rigid steel
conduits. Conduits encased in the concrete shall be UPVC conduits
» The minimum size for the below-grade conduit shall be 50 mm. Below grade conduits shall be
sized one size larger than required by the Code maximum wire fill
» Below grade bends shall be of the long radius type
» The minimum depth for low voltage system UPVC conduit installation shall be 560 mm below
grade. For rigid steel conduit, the minimum depth for a low voltage system shall be 310 mm
» Minimum depth for low voltage system EB UPVC conduits encased in concrete shall be 880
mm
» There shall be no more than three 90° bends in a below or above grade conduit run
» Below grade conduits shall have red tiles or concrete cover

» Spare conduits shall be provided with pull, terminated with plugged couplings and installed
flush with the finished floor in buildings, or 18.75 mm above the finished surface in other areas
» Upon completion of a duct run, a test mandrel (6 mm less in diameter than the inside diameter
of the duct) and wire brush cleaner (slightly larger than the duct) shall be pulled through each
duct. The testing and cleaning of a concrete encased duct shall be done on the day after the
concrete has been poured into, removing any concrete splash of spalls in the ducts
8.2.2 Above Grade Conduit
» Above grade conduit shall be rigid, Rigid PVC conduit shall be allowed for use, where
applicable, as per IEC 61386
» The minimum conduit size shall be 18.75 mm. Conduit used behind control boards or other
types of panels shall be 12.5 mm
» The separation of the conduit shall be horizontal, vertical, and on the crossing by a minimum
of 150 mm from piping or equipment with surface temperatures in excess of 45°C
» When conduit is terminated to equipment where vibration or movement is a concern, a
flexible, liquid tight conduit shall be installed between the rigid conduit and the equipment
» Conduit fitting in the above grade conduit system shall be manufactured from copper-free
aluminum. Cover screws shall be stainless steel
» Fittings shall be approved for the area classification and be suitable for the environment in
which they are installed.
» When PVC coated rigid galvanized steel conduit is used, it shall consist of galvanized steel
fitting with a 1.02 mm (40 mm) PVC exterior coating and epoxy interior coating. Cover screws
shall be stainless steel. Fittings shall be approved for the area classification and be suitable for

the environment in which they are installed. PVC coated rigid steel conduit shall be used in
exposed areas subject to mechanical damages and also used below grade.
» PVC coated clamps shall be used to fasten the aluminum conduit to ungalvanized steel or
concrete surfaces. Where the aluminum conduit comes in direct contact with ungalvanized steel
or concrete, the conduit shall be wrapped with insulating tape.
» At transition points between aluminum and steel conduit, an anti-oxidizing compound specially
made for this application shall be applied to the threads.
» Straight runs of conduit in excess of 45 m shall be provided with an approved expansion
fitting.
» Where conduit runs exceed the equivalent of a 45 m run or more than the equivalent of three
90° bends, expansion joint fittings shall be installed. One 90° bend shall be considered the
equivalent of 15 m of straight run conduit.
» Conduit entry into enclosures or devices shall be besides, bottom or top entry. For outdoor
installation, the top entry is not allowed, without exception.
8.2.3 Conduit Seals, Breathers and Drains
» Breathers and drains shall be installed at all low points in conduit systems and as required to
prevent the accumulation of moisture in the conduit and equipment enclosures.

8.2.4 Conduit Elbows and Tees


» Installation and construction of elbow and tee fittings shall be compatible with the above
Specifications.
8.3 INSTALLATION OF DUCT BANKS AND MANHOLES
8.3.1 Duct Banks
» Duct banks shall be constructed of UPVC conduit, encased in reinforced concrete
» In the assembly of a duct bank, the conduits are supported by spacers that hold the conduits
in place during the backfilling of inter-conduit space with sand or cement. The spacer shall be of
polypropylene plastic
» Spacers for supporting conduits shall be installed at intervals not exceeding 1.5 m. Spacers
shall be with interlocking lugs and matching holes for field assembly and into multiple units
» Conduit runs in duct banks shall be made continuous by the use of couplings
» Duct banks shall be provided with 20% spare capacity
» Structural concrete shall be used in duct banks constructed with PVC conduits under areas
that are subjected to vehicular traffic, for example, under roadways

» The concrete encasement shall extend a minimum of 75 mm from any conduit in the bank to
the outside surface
» The minimum distance from grade to the top of the duct bank shall be 600 mm
» Conduit stubs from duct bank to above grade shall be rigid steel. Where PVC conduit is used,
a transition to rigid steel conduit shall be made below grade
8.3.2 Handholes
» Handholes shall be installed in the locations as shown on the Contract Drawings and as
necessary to meet cable pulling requirements
» Manholes shall have a minimum inside dimensions of 800 x 800 mm by 800 mm deep
» Handhole cover plates shale be completely sealed against water ingress.
» Handhole cover plates shall be heavy duty
» Adequate space shall be allowed for :
• Making and supporting splices
• Supporting cables
• Clearance between low voltage control, power cables
• Bending and training cables for offsets and changes in the horizontal and vertical direction
• Providing adequate working clearance required as per IEC 60364 pulling, terminating and
splicing cables
» Handholes required for the duct bank system shall be located in non-hazardous classified
areas. Manholes shall be provided with cable pulling irons embedded in the concrete sidewalls
of the duct bank.

9.2.3 General Labor

10. Quality Control:

10.1 Documentation: The following input and output documents are needed in order to ensure
quality and comply with this method statement.
10.1.1 Input Documents:
10.1.1.1 IFC Drawings
10.1.1.2 Risk assessment / job safety analysis.
10.1.2 Output Documents:
10.1.2.1 Work inspection request (WIR)
10.1.2.2 Inspection records

10.2 Inspection: In order to ensure the quality assurance and quality control, the following
documents will be reviewed to ensure that all quality requirements have been met before
execution of any method statement works:
10.2.1 Approved Shop Drawings and Specifications.
10.2.2 Approved associated/linked Method Statements.
10.2.3 Approved Material Submittals.
10.2.4 All delivered uPVC Ducts shall be subject to inspection and approval of the
Engineer/ Consultant in line with the approved material submittal.
10.2.5 All uPVC Ducts installations shall be inspected in accordance with the approved
drawings.
10.2.6 Approved inspection test plan (ITP) and check lists will be used during inspection.
10.2.7 Work inspection request shall be issued to contractor / company project inspector
in advance.
10.2.8 Inspection shall be done in accordance with the QC Plan.
10.2.9 During Inspection, all exposed areas of uPVC Ducts shall be carefully examined
for leakage.
10.2.10 Initial mandrel test will be conducted for uPVC installed in duct bank prior to
concrete pouring and a final mandrel test after concrete pouring.
10.2.11 There will be red color painted on the top surface of duct bank after surface
preparation of concrete.
