ICT (SOFTWARE MAINATIANCE IN WINDOWS 10)
Follow the steps listed below to do some practical computer maintenance on the operating system
(windows 10/windows 11)

Software(intangible part) maintain ace is really vital as maintaining the computer hardware the
physical part of a computer for a computer to function as supposed to. And with newer operating
system most of them come with inbuilt features to assist in that job.

Run Windows 10 Automatic Maintenance Feature

This feature can perform system & apps updates, security & malware scans, disk optimization &
defragmentation, diagnostics and so on. But this feature can only run for an hour per day, so if the
process hasn’t been finished, it will continue during the next automatic maintenance.

So do we run it ?

Step 1 – open control panel from your apps or search it on the search button and open it

Step 2- chose security and maintenance and proceed to expand the maintenance section

Step 3- click start maintenance if your computer hasn’t done it (it usually indicates the date the last
time it had run and most windows schedule or you can schedule it yourself to run automatically)

Update your operating system

I can’t emphasize the essence of always making sure your operating system is up to date and not just
windows but any application installed in your computer. Though often times windows usually
update itself sometimes an update might be delayed

So head over to settings >update and security >windows update> the check for update (make sure
you are running the latest windows which is version 22h2 and have the lates build.

Delete Unnecessary Files and Programs

As you use your computer for longer and longer, there will be more and more junk files on your
computer, so your computer will run slower and slower. And in order to maintain your computer,
deleting unnecessary files is pretty a good idea. You can read this post to delete files

Similarly, if there are so many programs on your computer, your PC will run slow. Therefore,
deleting some unnecessary programs is also one of the Windows 10 maintenance tools that can
make your PC run fast.

This is fairly simple to get rid of files you don’t need basically head over to the files you don’t need
and delete for apps and you basically uninstall by basically heading over to settings and access the
apps and right click an app to uninstall it or head over to control panel to under programs and
features to uninstall
Run the SFC Scan
The SFC scan is a popular method using the command prompt or well known as CMD to check any
corrupt files on your computer more so on your hard drive. SFC will scan and repair any issue
automatically

To do this type CMD at the search or click on your keyboard both windows logo key and the R key to
open the run dialogue and type CMD make sure to run it with administrative privileges.

After opening CMD trype sfc/scannow and press enter and let it run

Update Device Drivers

Your computer has many different types of components connected to it. The PC needs to
communicate with these hardware components through device drivers.

o ensure that your PC performs at its best, you should make sure your drivers are updated. You
can install drivers by using the CD/DVD that came from the manufacturer, but you can trust that
such drivers are updated.

If you want get the latest version, you need to manually download them over the internet.

Windows often try to detect the drivers your pc needs and install but sometimes it doesn’t do a
good job so alternatives are

Step 1 – visit your computer manufactures websites and download the drivers specifically for
your computer though you might need to know the model or the serial no of your pc or the
serial no so if its dell or hp you can visit (DELL SUPPOR or HP Support)

Step 2- Download utilities apps example driver booster and it will scan for the drivers.
Download and scan

Clean Up Your Disk

Over time, your PC will be filled with unwanted junk such as temporary files, offline web pages,
thumbnails, old Windows installation, and many others. These files can really add up and take
up too much space which can slow down your pc

Step 1- use the inbuilt utility app from windows to clean your HDD

Click search on windows> search for disk clean up > and clean up junks files

Step 2- download utility apps like Garry tools or the c-the cleaner app or use pc manager from
windows to do the clean up

Step 3 – make sure storage sense is turned on windows settings under storage this will ensure
your pc automatically clean your pc for any unnecessary files or junk

DEFRAGMENTING YOUR DRIVES

Defragmentation, also known as “defrag” or “defragging”, is the process of reorganizing the
data stored on the hard drive so that related pieces of data are put back together, all lined up in
a continuous fashion.

You could say that defragmentation is like cleaning house for your Servers or PCs, it picks up all
of the pieces of data that are spread across your hard drive and puts them back together again,
nice and neat and clean.

Disk fragmentation occurs when a file is broken up into pieces to fit on the disk.

Because files are constantly being written, deleted and resized, fragmentation is a natural
occurrence. When a file is spread out over several locations, it takes longer to read and write
resulting in slow computer performance.

STEP 1>using the windows 10 defragment tool to defrag your drives

Search for defragment tool on windows search and then you can

Can check if your drives are optimized or defragged and you can scan and ran the tool but
usually windows usually defrag your drives when your computer is not in use in specified hours.
Defrag your drives

Please not you should not defrag SSD drives (find the reason of why is not recommended)

You can search for other utility apps for defragmenting

Checking the state of your DRIVES

S.M.A.R.T. is a monitoring system built into most drives. Found on both Windows and Mac,
S.M.A.R.T. is commonly used when discussing hard drive health.

STEP 1-Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Report Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) is the quickest way
uncover issues with your HDD. When S.M.A.R.T. data indicates possible drive failure, software
on the PC will alert users to help prevent data loss. You can also manually check S.M.A.R.T.
status in Windows and macOS whenever you want.

A more advanced command you can use to perform a hard drive health check in Windows is
"chkdsk." Similar to the command above, you must first open Command Prompt, but this time
you will need to do so as an administrator. Type "cmd" into the search bar as before—but this
time don't hit enter, instead right-click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator.

By running the chkdsk command with some parameters after it, users can scan and repair
damaged drives. Typing "/f" after the chkdsk command (i.e. “chkdsk /f”), will tell the function to
attempt to fix any errors that it finds on the disk. Note that this may take much longer than the
regular chkdsk command.
STEP 2- use hard disk sentinel to check the health of your hard rive or use stellar data recovery
download one to check the health of the hard drive

DIAGNOSING THE RAM

s your computer's short-term memory, which it uses to work on its current task.
However, like any computer part, even the best RAM(opens in new tab) can break, so
you'll want to know how to test whether your memory is stable or not.

You can check or scan the ram using windows by using the memory diagnostic tool

Or download the pass mark memtest 86 tool

CPU /issues temperature

You can check your CPU temp through the bios or UEFi

But you can download speccy ,or core temp and check the CPU temp of your computer
notice you can use this tools to know the specs of your computer
