The immune system is a functional system composed of cells, plasma

proteins, and other substances that protect the body from harmful
agents. There are 5 main classes of infectious agents: bacteria,
viruses, fungi, protozoans, and multicellular parasites. Bacteria are
Areprotozoansonly composed of prokaryotic cells; viruses are composed of either DNA
carriedbymosquitoes
or RNA in a protein capsid; and fungi, protozoans, and parasites are
specifically composed of eukaryotic cells. The immune system provides both
innate and adaptive immunity. First line of defense is the skin and
mucous membrane. The second line of defense is composed of
nonspeci c internal defenses including cells of innate immunity,
chemicals, in ammation, and fever.
