IDEAL GASES

1. The decrease in internal energy of 3lb of an ideal gas is 325BTU when the pressure decreases
from 100psia to 20 psia and volume increases from 1.5ft³ to 4.5ft³. Cv = 0.25BTU/Ib°R.
Determine ΔΗ (BTU), T1 (°R) and T2 (°R).
2. A system consists of two vessels, A and B with connecting valves. The vessel A contains 15ft³ of
Nitrogen at 220psia and 110°F. Vessel B contains 2lb of Nitrogen at 80psia and 60°F. After the
valve separating the two vessels is opened, the resulting temperature becomes 90°F. What is the
final pressure of the mixture in psia?
3. A balloon, considered spherical, is 30ft in diameter. The surrounding air is at 60°F and the
barometer reads 29.6inHg. What gross load (lb) may the balloon lift if it is filled with Hydrogen
at 70°F and at atmospheric pressure?
4. The temperature of an ideal gas remains constant while the absolute pressure changes from
103.4kPaa to 827.2kPaa. If the initial volume is 80 liters, determine the change of density
expressed as a percentage of the initial density for 160g of gas.
5. Consider 4lb of a certain ideal gas with R = 80ftlb/lb°R that undergo a process and results in
these changes: ΔΗ = 2075BTU and ΔU = 1382BTU. Find Cv (BTU/Ib°R) and the temperature
change (F°).
6. An unknown gas at P1 = 95psia and V1 = 4ft³ undergoes a process to P2 = 15psia and V2 =
16.56ft³, during which the enthalpy decreases to 83 BTU: cv = 0.1573 BTU/lb°R. Determine R
(ftlb/lb°R) and AU (ftlb).
7. A 60ft³ tank containing helium at 250°F is evacuated from atmospheric pressure until the
vacuum is 28.9inHg. If the gas left in the tank is cooled to a temperature of 36°F, what is the
pressure in inHg?
8. If I have an unknown quantity of gas held at a temperature of 1195K in a container with a volume
of 25liters and a pressure of 560atm, how many moles of gas do i have?
9. How many moles of gas are contained in a 5L cylinder at a pressure of 100atm and a temperature
of 35°C? If the gas weighs 79.14g, what is its molecular weight?
10. A 19.5L flask at 15 °C contains a mixture of three gases: N ₂ (2.5 mol), He (0.38 mol), and N (1.34
mol). Calculate the partial pressure of neon gas in the mixture.

CONSTANT VOLUME PROCESS

1. A perfect gas has a value of R = 58.8 ft.lbf/lbm°R and k = 1.26. If 20 Btu are added to 5 lbm of
this gas at constant volume when the initial temperature is 90 °F, find (a) T2, Change in H, Change
in S, Change in U and (b) Work for a non flow process.
2. A reversible, non flow, constant volume process decreases the internal energy by 316.5 KJ for
2.268kg of a gas R = 430 J/KgK and k = 1.35. Determine: a.)the work; b.) the heat and c.) the
change in entropy if the initial temperature is 204.4 °C?
