Grade: IV Worksheet III Subject: English

I. Read the given passage and answer the questions at the end of it.

Egyptian Civilization

Many centuries ago, a group of weary nomads

wandered into the fertile lands along the River Nile.
They found the valley to be extremely beautiful, they
realized that there were fish in the waters and
plenty of berries on the land. All this meant
'food'! So they decided to make their home there, at least for a
while. Months later, they found the river drying up and the land
becoming parched. They thought maybe it was time for them
to move out. While they were still thinking about it, the river
began to rise and flood its banks. This scared them and they
thought it was best to flee before the raging floods drowned
them. The thought made them unhappy as the valley was very beautiful and they had had
a wonderful time there. So some of the nomads fled, but others decided to stay on. The
river rewarded them suitably, as when it receded, it left behind a thick layer of mud and
silt. The valley looked greener than before! They sowed some seeds and got a rich
harvest of crops. They gave up their wandering and settled down by the River Nile.
Soon little villages came up on the banks of this river. The people made their house with
mud bricks and cultivated the fertile land for rich harvest. This land came to be known as
the granary of the Mediterranean. This is how the Egyptian Civilization began.
