Autodesk’s partners frequently compete against each other in the marketplace, and it is critically important that all participants in this meeting
observe all requirements of antitrust laws and other laws regarding unfair competition. Autodesk’s long insistence upon full compliance with all
legal requirements in the antitrust field has not been based solely on the desire to stay within the bounds of the law, but also on the conviction that
the preservation of a free and vigorous competitive economy is essential to the welfare of our business and that of our partners, the markets they
serve, and the countries in which they operate. It is against the policy of Autodesk to sponsor, encourage or tolerate any discussion or
communication among any of its partners concerning past, present or future prices, pricing policies, bids, discounts, promotions, terms or conditions
of sale, choice of customers, territorial markets, quotas, inventory, allocation of markets, products or services, boycotts and refusals to deal, or any
proprietary or confidential information. Communication of this type should not occur, whether written, oral, formal, informal, or “off the record.” All
discussion at this meeting should be strictly limited to presentation topics.

What is Generative Design?
Setting the foundation
What is Generative Design?
Generative Design is becoming a common term
▪ “Generative design is an iterative design process that
involves a program that will generate a certain
number of outputs that meet certain constraints, and
a designer that will fine tune the feasible region by
changing minimal and maximal values of an interval in
which a variable of the program meets the set of
constraints, in order to reduce or augment the number
of outputs to choose from. The program doesn't need
to be run on a machine like a digital computer, it can
be run by a human for example with pen and paper.
The designer doesn't need to be a human, it can be a
test program in a testing environment or an artificial
intelligence, for example a generative adversarial
network. The designer learns to refine the program
(usually involving algorithms) with each iteration as
their design goals become better defined over time.” ,

& Process
The ultimate goal for any
engineering activity is to strike
the right balance between
performance and cost to
produce for a given design
challenge or market opportunity.

Engineers are limited in the

time and energy they can spend
on any design problem to fully
explore the options that
encompass the design space.

Improved Productivity
and Weight Reduction
“We went from a computer model to a
prototype in a couple hours. I was blown
away. It looked like something my
customers would buy immediately. It
looked racy, had all the cool geometry,
and it was lightweight. Using generative
design is a no-brainer to me.”

Improved Efficiency
and Weight Reduction
“Sometimes you stick with a design
because that's how it's always been done.
It's good to see a different way to solve
the same problem and use the generative
design output to take a new approach."

Recent Extension Win
Freelance Engineer sees the value in generative design and the extension

▪ Started as a demo of TO vs. GD

▪ User calculated 150 CC per project and

sees break-even at 29 projects per year.

▪ Gauged that especially during learning

phase, projects would likely consume
more CC (>500)

▪ Benefit of spending on the extension to

learn outweighed the cost of being frugal

▪ Extension promo made sense in order not

to limit himself for customer jobs

Basics of Modeling for Generative Design
Starting with the right foundation
▪ Model in Inventor!
▪ Users should work where they are most comfortable

▪ Preserves
▪ Mounting and connection locations
▪ Ultimately where loads and constraints are applied

▪ Obstacles
▪ Clearances for assembly
▪ Where surrounding “stuff” attaches or moves

▪ Starting Shape
▪ Generally optional
▪ Required with obstructed line of sight between
preserves

Best Practices for GD Modeling in Inventor
Let the user work they are familiar Inventor 2021

▪ Create a view representation of the key

elements of the design to be included in
the generative design study

▪ Create a new multi-body part in the

Inventor 2022
assembly context as a container for
creating preserves, obstacles and starting
shape
▪ Shrinkwrap with or without associativity
o New Simplify command in Inventor 2022
o Quickest path to a single usable .ipt
o Note: Associativity with large assemblies will have a
lot of files copied to Desktop Connector, not the case
with Send to Fusion in Inventor 2022

Desktop Connector vs. INV 2022 Send to Fusion
Which one is best?

Using Desktop Connector Using INV 2022 Send to Fusion

Pros: Pros:
▪ Files automatically sync between Inventor and Fusion 360 ▪ Will assist to install Fusion 360 and setup Team Hub as
in both directions part of workflow
▪ Parts or assemblies ▪ Doesn’t require Desktop Connector
▪ Open in Inventor from Fusion Team ▪ Better workflow with Vault, no copying to Desktop
Connector and managing duplicate files
▪ On-demand push update to Fusion 360
Cons: ▪ Simplify and derive associativity will not impact
performance
▪ Manual installation of Fusion 360 and Desktop Connector
required
▪ Manual setup of Team Hub Cons:
▪ Files must be copied outside of Vault into Desktop ▪ Fusion 360 is not always in sync with Inventor, push to
Connector and managed separately update required
▪ Parts only (supports Derive and Simplify .ipt)
▪ Limited to Inventor to Fusion, not Fusion to Inventor
