Section 7.1

1. Fill in the blank. Ratio is just another way, some would say a fancy way, to say COMPARISON, although
the meaning is not quite the same.
2. When have you used ratios in the real world? A recipe that requires a ratio of 2 cups of flour to 1 cup of
sugar. This ratio of flour to sugar (2:1) indicates that for every 2 cups of flour used, 1 cup of sugar
should be used. If you have 4 cups of flour, following this ratio would mean using 2 cups of sugar.
This kind of ratio is commonly found in cooking and baking to maintain the right balance of
ingredients.
3. Define proportion. Proportion refers to the relationship or ratio of one part to another within a whole
or between different elements.
4. Ratios can be investigated using double number lines, tables, strip diagrams, and more. Which do you like
best? Each method for investigating ratios has its own strengths, but if I had to choose, I'd say double
number lines are pretty neat. They offer a clear visual representation of the relationship between
quantities and make it easy to understand the proportionality between two sets of numbers. But hey,
each method has its perks depending on the situation!
5. Dolly works part-time staging homes for a realtor. She regularly uses lemons and limes as décor in
kitchens. Dolly believes lemons and limes in a 3 to 2 ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing. If Dolly uses
12 lemons to decorate her first house and has 13 more houses to stage, how many lemons and how many
limes will she need? Show your work below.

If Dolly uses a 3 to 2 ratio of lemons to limes and she uses 12 lemons for the first house, you can figure out the
number of limes needed for each house using this ratio.

First, determine the ratio of lemons to limes:

3 lemons : 2 limes For every 3 lemons, there are 2 limes.

Given that Dolly has used 12 lemons for the first house, you can set up a proportion to find the number of
limes needed: 3 lemons/2 limes = 12 lemons/ x limes

Cross-multiplying: 3x= 2*12 3x=24

Solving for x (the number of limes): x=24/3 x= 8

So, for the first house, with 12 lemons, she would need 8 limes. Now, to find the total number of lemons and
limes needed for the remaining 13 houses:

If each house requires 3 lemons and 2 limes, for 13 houses:

Total lemons needed = ( 3 lemons/house} \times 13 (houses)

Total lemons needed = 39 lemons

Total limes needed = 2 limes/house \times 13 houses

Total limes needed = 26 limes

Therefore, for the remaining 13 houses, Dolly will need 39 lemons and 26 limes to maintain the 3 to 2 ratio.

6. The Smith family argues about who makes the best eggnog. Joanna’s recipe calls for 4 cups of milk for every 12
egg yolks. Dawson’s recipe calls for 4 egg yolks for every 2 cups of milk. Whose eggnog recipe is egg-ier? How do
you know?

To determine whose eggnog recipe is "egg-ier," we can compare the ratios of egg yolks to cups of milk in each
recipe.

Joanna's recipe calls for 4 cups of milk for every 12 egg yolks, which simplifies to a ratio of (4 : 12), or
simplified, (1 : 3) (dividing both sides by 4 gives (1 : 3).

Dawson's recipe, on the other hand, calls for 4 egg yolks for every 2 cups of milk, which simplifies to a ratio of
(4 : 2), or simplified, (2 : 1) (dividing both sides by 2 gives (2 : 1).

Comparing the simplified ratios:

- Joanna's ratio is (1 : 3) (1 part egg yolks to 3 parts milk).

- Dawson's ratio is (2 : 1) (2 parts egg yolks to 1 part milk).

In terms of being "egg-ier," Dawson's eggnog recipe (with a ratio of (2 : 1) of egg yolks to milk) has a
higher ratio of egg yolks compared to milk than Joanna's recipe (with a ratio of (1 : 3) of egg yolks to milk).
Therefore, Dawson's eggnog recipe is "egg-ier" as it contains a higher proportion of egg yolks relative to milk
than Joanna's recipe.

7. The directions to mix up some delicious Grape Kool-Aid® appear below. The number of quarts in a gallon,
and other conversions, can be found on the internet and also in your textbook on page 497. How might you
make exactly 6 servings?
8. How might you make exactly 12 servings?

To make Grape Kool-Aid® for different servings, we'll start with the recipe and adjust the quantities
accordingly. The standard directions for making Grape Kool-Aid® typically involve mixing one packet with
sugar and water to make 2 quarts (8 cups) of Kool-Aid.

For 6 Servings:

If one packet makes 2 quarts (8 cups), and you want 6 servings:

● Each serving requires 2 quarts / 3 servings (since 6 servings = 2 quarts and 1 serving = 2 quarts / 3).
● You'll need to mix 2 quarts × 2 servings = 4 quarts for 6 servings.
● Adjust the proportions accordingly, using 1.5 packets of Grape Kool-Aid® (since 1 packet makes 2
quarts, and you need 4 quarts for 6 servings).
For 12 Servings:

● Each serving requires 2 quarts / 6 servings (since 12 servings = 4 quarts and 1 serving = 2 quarts / 6).
● You'll need to mix 2 quarts × 6 servings = 12 quarts for 12 servings.
● Adjust the proportions accordingly, using 3 packets of Grape Kool-Aid® (since 1 packet makes 2
quarts, and you need 12 quarts for 12 servings).

Remember, when altering the quantities for different servings, it's essential to maintain the same ratio of
Kool-Aid packets to water and sugar for consistency in flavor and sweetness. Adjusting proportions using the
ratios will ensure the desired taste is maintained across different batch sizes

9a. Flora is sewing Galentine’s Day wreaths for her friends. She has created 4 wreaths and used 7 yards of ribbon.
How much ribbon will she need to complete all 13 wreaths? Set up a proportion and solve.

9b. Flora finds that ribbon is only sold in spools of 9 yards. How many spools will she need to buy?

9a. How much ribbon will she need for 13 wreaths?

If Flora created 4 wreaths using 7 yards of ribbon, let's set up a proportion to find out how much she'll need
for 13 wreaths:

Let x represent the amount of ribbon needed for 13 wreaths.

The ratio of wreaths to ribbon used is constant, so we can set up a proportion:

4 wreaths/7 yards=13 wreaths/x yards

To solve for x, cross multiply:

4x=7×134x=7×13

4x=914x=91

Now, divide both sides by 4 to find x:

x=91/4 x=22.75 yards

So, Flora will need 22.75 yards of ribbon to complete all 13 wreaths.

9b. How many spools of 9 yards each will she need to buy?

If ribbon is only sold in spools of 9 yards, Flora needs to round up to the nearest whole number because she
can't buy fractions of a spool.

She needs 22.75 yards in total, but since spools come in 9-yard lengths:

22.75 yards÷9 yards/spool=2.5278 spools22.75 yards÷9 yards/spool=2.5278 spools

Rounding up, Flora will need to buy 3 spools of 9 yards each to have enough ribbon to make the 13 wreaths.

10. Solve the following using a double number line. Walking at a constant speed, a person walks 3⁄4 of a mile every
12 minutes. How far does the person walk in 30 minutes? How long does it take the person to walk 21⁄2 miles?

¾ / 12 = x/30 is the proportion

Cross multiply:

12x= ¾ * 30

12x= 90

x= 90/12

x= 7.5 miles

Now to find y, ( the time taken to walk 2 ½ miles-

3/4/12 = 21/2/y

12* 5/2=¾*y

y= 12*5/ 2*¾

y= 60/6/4

y= 240/6

Y = 40 minutes

It takes the person 40 minutes to walk 2 ½ miles.

11. Solve the following using a strip diagram. At a zoo, the ratio of king penguins to emperor penguins is 2:3. In all,
there are 45 king and emperor penguins combined. How many emperor penguins are at the zoo?

Given information:

- Ratio of king penguins to emperor penguins is 2:3.

- Total number of king and emperor penguins combined is 45.

Let's use a strip diagram to solve this:

1. Represent the ratio between king and emperor penguins.

2. Use the total number of penguins to find the specific quantity of emperor penguins.
Strip Diagram:

King Penguins Emperor Penguins

2 3

Since the total number of penguins is 45, the ratio in total parts (2 + 3) is 5 parts. Now, set up a proportion to
find the number of emperor penguins:

3 parts/ 5 parts= x penguins/45 penguins

Where 'x' is the number of emperor penguins.

Cross-multiply to solve for 'x':

3 * 45= 5x

135= 5x

x= 27

Therefore, there are 27 emperor penguins at the zoo.

12. Solve the following using any method. You can make a soap bubble mixture by combining 2 tablespoons
water with 1 tablespoon liquid dishwashing soap and 4 drops of corn syrup. Using the same ratios, how
much liquid dishwashing soap and how many drops of corn syrup should you use if you want to make a
soap bubble mixture with 5 tablespoons of water?

To scale up the soap bubble mixture from 2 tablespoons to 5 tablespoons of water, maintaining the same
ratios, you'd require 2.5 tablespoons of liquid dishwashing soap. Similarly, to align with the ratio, you'd use
10 drops of corn syrup for the 5 tablespoons of water, ensuring the consistent proportions observed in the
initial mixture are maintained.

Liquid Dish Soap- 2x= 5 *1

2x=5

x= 2.5

Corn Syrup- 2y= 5*4

2y= 20

y= 10

13. How do you know if a fraction is a unit rate?

A fraction is a unit rate when its denominator is 1, signifying the quantity of one unit in relation to the
numerator, representing a single item's value or rate.

14. A unit rate is different from a unit fraction, which we studied weeks ago. What is a unit

fraction?

A unit fraction, on the other hand, is any fraction where the numerator is 1, highlighting a part of a whole,
usually indicating a single equal part of the whole quantity

15. Take a picture of a unit rate sticker at a store and affix it below. Interpret the sticker.

If the unit price is $1.21 and the retail price is $16.98, the unit rate indicates the cost per
unit (for instance, per ounce, pound, item, etc.). In this case, for each unit, the cost is
$1.21. The retail price of $16.98 suggests the total cost for a set or quantity of these units.
To calculate the total cost, you'd need to divide the retail price by the unit price: This
would give you the total quantity or number of units available for $16.98 at the unit price
of $1.21 each.

16. Frostie Blue Cream Soda (gross) is regularly sold for $1.49 per bottle. Since each bottle contains 12 ounces this
is a unit rate of 12.5¢. Show the steps to calculate this unit rate.

1.49/12=0.124 per ounce which is 12.41 per ounce

17. For one week only, Frostie Blue Cream Soda is being offered at 99¢ each which is a unit rate of 8.3¢ per ounce.
Show the steps to calculate this unit rate.

Special Price- 0.99/12= 0.0825 which is 8.25 per ounce

18. In order to get this special pricing, you must buy Frostie Blue Cream Soda in multiples of 6. List three different
quantities of Frostie Blue Cream Soda you could buy at Albertsons.

To buy multiples of 6 bottles (as required for the special pricing): 6 bottles ,12 bottles (2 sets of 6), 18 bottles (3
sets of 6)

Therefore, at Albertsons, to get the special pricing, you could buy 6 bottles, 12 bottles (2 sets of 6), or 18
bottles (3 sets of 6) of Frostie Blue Cream Soda.

Section 7.5 Percent Change

19. Robyn just measured herself and found out she is 44 inches tall. The last time she measured, she was 40 inches
tall. What percent taller is Robin now?

To find the percentage increase in Robyn's height:

1. Calculate the difference between her current and previous height: 44 inches- 40 inches = 4 inches

2. Divide the difference by her previous height: 4 inches. 40 inches = 0.1

3. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage: 0.1 * 100 = 10%

Therefore, Robyn is 10% taller now compared to her previous height.

20. Several years ago, the average serving size of beef at restaurants was 5 ounces. Due to changing restaurant
trends, the average serving size is now 20% larger. What is the current average serving size?

To find the current average serving size after a 20% increase from the original 5 ounces:

1. Calculate the increase: 20 % * 5 ounces= 0.2 * 5 punches= 1 ounce

2. Add the increase to the original serving size: 5 ounces + 1 ounce= 6 ounces

Therefore, the current average serving size of beef at restaurants is 6 ounces after a 20% increase from the
original 5 ounces.

21. Last week the delivery man went to 68 houses. This week he went to 39 houses. Find the percent decrease in
houses visited.

To find the percent decrease in the number of houses visited:

1. Calculate the decrease in the number of houses visited: 68 house - 39 house = 29 house
2. Calculate the percent decrease relative to the original number of houses visited: 29/68 houses * 100 ~
42.65%

Therefore, the percent decrease in houses visited is approximately 42.65%.
