CHAPTER: ELECTRIC CHARGES AND FIELDS MONTH: APRIL (2024)

S.NO. QUESTIONS MARKS

1 Two similar spheres having +Q and -Q charges are kept at a certain 1

distance. F force acts between the two. If at the middle of two spheres,
another similar sphere having +Q charge is kept, then it experiences a
force in magnitude and direction as
(a) zero having no direction.
(b) 8F towards +Q charge.
(c) 8F towards -Q charge.
(d) 4F towards +Q charge.
2 Which of the following graphs shows the variation of electric field E 1
due to a hollow spherical conductor of radius R as a function of
distance from the centre of the sphere?

3 The total flux through the faces of the cube with side of length a if a 1
charge q is placed at corner A of the cube is
4 Which of the following figures represent the electric field lines due 1
to a single negative charge?

5 Four charges are arranged at the comers of a square ABCD, as 1

shown. The force on the charge kept at the centre O is

(a) zero
(b) along the diagonal AC
(c) along the diagonal BD
(d) perpendicular to side AB
6 Two charges -3q and q are placed fixed on the x-axis separated by 2
distance ‘d’. Where should a third charge 2q be placed such that it will
not experience any force?
7 Two identical metallic spheres A and B each carrying a charge ‘2q’ 2
repel each other with force ‘F’. A third metallic sphere C of same size,
carrying charge ‘q’ is made to touch the spheres A and B alternately
and the moved away. By what factor does the force acting between
the two spheres change?
8 Consider a uniform electric field E=3×103 i N/C. 2
(a)What is the flux of this field through a square of 10 cm on a side
whose plane is parallel to the y-z plane?
(b)What is the flux through the same square if the normal to its plane
makes a 60° angle with the x-axis?
9 A spherical conducting shell of inner radius r1 and outer radius r2 has 3
a charge ‘Q’. A charge ‘q’ is placed at the centre of the shell.
(a) What is the surface charge density on the
(i) inner surface,
(ii) outer surface of the shell?
(b) Write the expression for the electric field at a point x > r2 from
the centre of the shell.
A sphere S1 of radius r1 encloses a net charge Q. If there is another
concentric sphere S2 of radius r2 (r2 > r,) enclosing charge 2Q, find the
ratio of the electric flux through S1 and S2. How will the electric flux
through sphere S1 change if a medium of dielectric constant K is
introduced in the space inside S2 in place of air?

10 Define the term electric dipole moment. Is it a scalar or vector? 3

Deduce an expression for the electric field at a point on the equatorial
plane of an electric dipole of length 2a.
11 Two point charges + 3q and – 4q are placed at the vertices ‘B’ and ‘C’ 3
of an equilateral triangle ABC of side ‘a’ as given in the figure. Obtain
the expression for

(I) the magnitude and

(ii) the direction of the resultant electric field at the vertex A due to
these two charges.
12. Case Study Questions: 4
When electric dipole is placed in uniform electric field, its two
charges experience equal and opposite forces, which cancel each other
and hence net force on electric dipole in uniform electric field is zero.
However these forces are not collinear, so they give rise to some
torque on the dipole. Since net force on electric dipole in uniform
electric field is zero, so no work is done in moving the electric dipole
in uniform electric field. However some work is done in rotating the
dipole against the torque acting on it.

(i) The dipole moment of a dipole in a uniform external field Ē is B.

Then the torque τ acting on the dipole is
(a)τ=pxE
(b)τ=P.Ē
(c)τ=2(p+Ē)
(d) τ = (P + E)
(ii) An electric dipole consists of two opposite charges, each of
magnitude 1.0 μC separated by a distance of 2.0 cm. The dipole is
placed in an external field of 105 NC-1. The maximum torque on the
dipole is
(a) 0.2 x 10-3 Nm
(b) 1x 10-3 Nm
(c) 2 x 10-3 Nm
(d) 4x 10-3 Nm
(iii) Torque on a dipole in uniform electric field is minimum when θ
is equal to
(a) 0°
(b) 90°
(c) 180°
(d) Both (a) and (c)
(iv) When an electric dipole is held at an angle in a uniform electric
field, the net force F and torque τ on the dipole are
(a) F= 0, τ = 0
(b) F≠0, τ≠0
(c) F=0, τ ≠ 0
(d) F≠0, τ=0
OR
An electric dipole of moment p is placed in an electric field of
intensity E. The dipole acquires a position such that the axis of the
dipole makes an angle with the direction of the field. Assuming that
potential energy of the dipole to be zero when 0 = 90°, the torque
and the potential energy of the dipole will respectively be
(a)pEsinθ, –pEcosθ
(b)pEsinθ, –2pEcosθ
(c)pEsinθ, 2pEcosθ
(d) pEcosθ, – pEsinθ
13 State Gauss’s law. Derive an expression for electric field at any 5
point near a charged, infinitely long, plane sheet using Gauss’s law.
Two infinitely large plane thin parallel sheets having surface charge
densities σ1 and σ2 (σ1>σ2) are shown in the figure. Write the
magnitudes and directions of the net fields in the regions marked II
and III.
