Flourish Tutorial

We will use some of the Relief Tools and the Shape Editor to create
the various different shapes that make up the Flourish. The Layers
Manager will be used during the creation of these shapes. We will use
the artwork created on different vector layers to generate different shapes
on different relief layers. Bitmap layers will also be created and their
images will be used to control the content on relief layers, as well as the
appearance of the composite relief shown in the 3D View window.
The stages that you will cover during the course of this tutorial are:
ƒ Opening the Flourish Model (on page 2)
This stage involves opening an ArtCAM model file containing the
vector artwork needed to create the Flourish.
ƒ Adjusting the Model Resolution (on page 4)
This stage involves increasing the resolution of the ArtCAM model
used to create the Flourish.
ƒ Creating the Flourish (on page 5)
This stage involves creating three two-rail swept shapes and
additional shapes using the Shape Editor tool on two different
relief layers, merging the relief layers together, mirroring the
content, creating further shapes using the Shape Editor tool and
then smoothing a selected area of the relief layer.
ƒ Presenting the Flourish (on page 33)
This stage involves projecting the content of a bitmap layer onto
the surface of the composite relief.

Opening the Flourish Model
We will begin by opening the ArtCAM model that we will use to create a
flourish.

1. Click on the Open Existing Model icon on the

Assistant's Getting Started page to display the Open dialog
box.
2. Click on the Look in list box and then browse to the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\ArtCAM
Files\Examples\Flourish folder on your computer.

If you have chosen not to install the Examples directory along

with ArtCAM Pro, you can find this on the ArtCAM Pro
installation CD.
3. Click to select the Carving.art file. Its name is displayed in the File
name box.

The *.art suffix indicates that the selected file is an ArtCAM

model file.
4. Click on the Open button to close the dialog box and open the
model file.
The following bitmap image is shown in the 2D View window:

2 • Flourish Tutorial ArtCAM Pro 9.0 Flourish Tutorial

The image shown in the 2D View window is contained on the
Flourish Photo bitmap layer listed in the Bitmaps area of the
Layers Manager. There is a stack of vector layers in the
Vectors area of the Layers Manager. Each of these vector
layers contains artwork that represents different aspects of the
flourish design on the Flourish Photo bitmap layer. Each vector
layer has been named to indicate the purpose of its artwork in
relation to the overall flourish design.
There is a single relief layer listed in the Reliefs area of the
Layers Manager named Relief Layer 1. This layer is currently
empty.
We will use all of these different layers during the course of this
tutorial to create the following composite relief:

Adjusting the Model Resolution
We are now ready to adjust the resolution of the model.

1. Click on the Adjust Model Resolution button in the

Model area of the Assistant's Home page to display the Adjust
Model Resolution page.
We can see that the current resolution of the model is 490 x 326
points.
2. Click and drag on the slider to the right to increase the resolution of
the model to 1766 x 1178 points.

The new resolution of the model is shown beneath the current

resolution on the page.
3. Click on the Apply button. A message box appears warning that
resolution adjustment cannot be undone and asking if you want to
continue.
4. Click on the Yes button to close the message box, return to the
Assistant's Home page and set the resolution of the model.

Creating the Flourish
Half of the Flourish design comprises three two-rail swept shapes created
on separate relief layers. We will use the Shape Editor tool to modify
the resulting two-rail swept shapes and add some additional detail. We
will then merge these layers into a single relief layer and then mirror its
content. We will then add some further detail and smooth the composite
relief to complete the Flourish design.

Creating the First Two-Rail Swept Shape

We will now create the first of our two-rail shapes on the relief layer
currently named Relief Layer 1. We will also change the name of this
layer so that it indicates what aspect of the flourish design is created on it.
1. Click on the Toggle Visibility button beside the Left Fan layer
in the Vectors area of the Layers Manager to display the vector
artwork on that particular vector layer in the 2D View window.
2. Click on the 2D Bitmap Contrast Tool slider in the 2D View
toolbar and drag to the left to reduce the contrast of the image on
the Flourish Photo bitmap layer shown in the 2D View window to
approximately 20%.
Reducing the contrast in the Flourish Photo bitmap layer makes it
far easier to see the vector artwork drawn on the Left Fan vector
layer. We will use this vector artwork to create a two-rail swept
shape representing the detail in the left centre area of the flourish
design.
3. Click on the relief layer named Relief Layer 1 in the Reliefs area
of the Layers Manager. Its name is emphasized in dark-grey to
indicate that it is selected.
This is the relief layer on which we will create a two-rail swept
shape using the vector artwork drawn on the Left Fan vector layer.
4. Double-click on the relief layer named Relief Layer 1 to display its
name box and associated buttons.
5. Type Fan in the name box.
6. Click on the button to apply the new name to the relief layer.
The name box and its associated buttons are no longer displayed.

7. Hold the Shift key down on your keyboard and then click to select
the vectors in the Left Fan vector layer shown in the 2D View
window in the order as numbered below:

The vectors turn magenta and are surrounded by a bounding box to

indicate that they are selected.

8. Click on the Two Rail Sweep button in the Relief Tools

area of the Assistant's Home page to display the Two Rail
Sweep page.

If you cannot see this button, click on the icon along the
right-edge of whichever button is currently shown in the
Relief Tools area of the Assistant's Home page to display
the Relief Shapes toolset:

You can also click on the icon at the right-end of the toolset
to pin all of the buttons that make up the toolset in the Relief
Tools area of the Assistant's Home page.

In the Status area of the Two Rail Sweep page, the First Drive
Rail and Second Drive Rail status is shown as Valid. In the 2D
View window, all three of the vectors selected as cross-sections are
numbered in red. Red numbers appear along the vector defined as
the first drive rail. Blue numbers appear along the vector defined as
the second drive rail. These numbers indicate the position of each
of the cross-sections relative to each of the drive rails. Direction
arrows also appear along both of the vectors selected as the drive
rails.
