1. For the given function f (x, y) = p ,
25 − x2 − y 2
(a) Find the domain.
(b) Find the range.
(c) Describe the function’s level curves.
(d) Determine if the domain is an open region, a closed region, or neither.
(e) Decide if the domain is bounded or unbounded.

2. Define f (0, 0) in a way that extends

x2 − y 2
f (x, y) = xy , (x, y) ̸= (0, 0)
x2 + y 2
to be continuous at the origin.

3. Consider a function f : R2 → R, where

sin2 (x − y)
f (x, y) = ,
|x| + |y|

when (x, y) ̸= (0, 0) and f (0, 0) = 0. Check the continuity of function f (x, y) at (0, 0).

4. Show that the function f : R2 → R, defined by

 x2 y
, (x, y) ̸= (0, 0)
f (x, y) = x4 + y 2
0, (x, y) = (0, 0)

is discontinuous at (0, 0).

5. Determine the set of points at which the function is continuous

 x2 y 3
, (x, y) ̸= (0, 0)
f (x, y) = 2x2 + y 2
1, (x, y) = (0, 0)

6. Let f (x, y)=ln(cos2 (ex )) + sin(x + y) then

(a) Find the value of fx and fy at (0, 0).

(b) Find fxy and fyx .

7. For a differentiable function f (x, y) with continuous second partial derivatives,

x = r cos θ and y = r sin θ, show that fr = fx cos θ + fy sin θ and frr = fxx cos2 θ +
2fxy cos θ sin θ + fy sin2 θ

8. Given that u = , p = x + y + z, q = x − y + z and r = x + y − z
q−r
(a) Express ux , uy and uz as functions of x, y and z both by using the Chain Rule.
(b) Express u in terms of x, y and z before differentiating.

(c) Evaluate ux , uy and uz at the point( 3, 2, 1).
