TOPCON CORPORATION

R-RMKR8800-0-0406-28
INTRODUCTION
• The KR-8800 has not only the basic functions of the auto keratometer/refractometer but also the automatic
start function so that anyone can use the instrument easily.

• The RM-8800 has only the basic functions of the auto refractometer.

• Unitization, addition of the removal cover, etc. have been done to respond to the changeable software and
the like. This aims to improve repairability.

• Unit replacement is the principle for repair (especially, for electric system).
* Since the CCD CAMERA is used as the display sensor and the measurement sensor, be quite careful
when replacing it and do not adjust any of the adjusted points unnecessarily.

• Read this manual carefully before undertaking any repairs of this instrument.

2-5 Principles of measurement
2-5-1 Target image projection to eyeground (ref function)

The fundamental principle is the same as for previous models: the measurement target is projected from the
iris image of the pupil section and the light reflected from the eyeground is detected.
The following figure is a general diagram of this method.

Ring iris
Eyeground

Eye being measured

Measurement The eyeground is measured by shooting

target from the pupil section ring iris into the eyeground.

As the figure shows, the ring pattern is used as the measurement target, the image is projected onto the eye-
ground from the pupil ring iris and the image reflected from the eyeground is detected with the CCD CAM-
ERA. The detected image is image processed and the way in which the circle is converted shows the
refraction of the eye.

Size: 3mm (in the case of R7.7)

Kerato ring

As shown in the figure, the kerato ring is projected on the cornea and the reflected image is detected with a
CCD CAMERA. The reflected image detected here undergoes image processing to compute the radius of
curvature and the refracting power of the cornea.

2-5-3 Image processing

1. Objective
To find the centers of the inner diameter and outer diameter of the ring image reflected back from the eye-
ground.

This circle or ellipse

is measured.

2. Method
1 As shown in the figure below, the image is divided up like a checker board. The right and left lines are at
regular intervals and parallel to the Y axis and the up and down lines are at regular intervals and parallel to
the X axis.
The axes are set up so that the intersection of the X-axis and Y-axis is the center of the ring.
2 Suppose that the difference of the coordinates for the inner diameter and the outer diameter of the ring is
only 7 units, as in the figure below. In this case, if the smallest unit that can be resolved is 1 unit, the center
between the outer diameter and the inner diameter is either Circle A or B. In other words, if the difference
between the inner diameter and the outer diameter is an even multiple of the minimum resolution, then the
center can be measured accurately, but if the difference is an odd multiple, then the center cannot be mea-
sured accurately.
3 If the reference units are made smaller than the measurement precision, an error of one reference unit
could be ignored.

Y axis

X axis

A
B

- 16 - R-RMKR8800-0-0406-28
The CCD CAMERA is a collection of extremely small such checker board squares. Normally, a CCD CAM-
ERA comprises hundreds of thousands of squares.
In summary:
1 The reflected image detected with the CCD CAMERA is stored into memory with one data bit for each
checker board square.
2 The coordinates are calculated from the stored data and the center of the inner diameter and the outer
diameter of the ring image is found.
3 The pattern for the figure found in 2 is identified to obtain the change in the image.

3. Calculation of the S.C.A. data

Measuring the change in the distance of the ring image from the origin of the coordinates (center of the ring
image) over a certain angle gives the S.C.A. data.

- 17 - R-RMKR8800-0-0406-28
2-5-4 Rotary prism method

There is fluctuation between the measured values because the eyeground condition is not always even due to a
disease, blood vessles, etc. Place a prism in front of the ring iris and rotate it during measurement. In a wider
area than the usual eyeground, the eyeground information is averaged to reduce the above fluctuation.

2-6 Operation principles of automatic start (KR-8800 only)
For vertical or horizontal directions (X and Y axes), check the alignment by using the positional relation
between the alignment spot and alignment mark of the reflected image as the conventional RM/KR-8000
series. For the focus direction (Z axis), check the alignment by using the relation between the parallel pro-
jected spot and placido ring.

3-1-2 Measurement accuracy check
(1) Secure the test eye for tools to the chin rest and measure in order, confirming that the values are within the
limits listed below.
(However, when the measurement values exceed the accuracy limits, re-correct the settings. → P. 65~)
(2) Also check the diopter value of the accessory test eye at this time.
Method of appraisal:
a. The representative values should be obtained after measuring the number of degrees and the axial
degree five times.
b. The fluctuation is the fluctuation width found after measuring five times.
c. Measure in 0.12 steps.

4-1 Alignment difference in Z direction during auto. start

Eye being measured

F (Reference position)

TARGET image

The diopter value recognized by this instrument is obtained by the following formula.

D = 1000
l
If the ∆Z offset occurs in the positional relation between the reference value of the instrument optical system
and the test eye (or the eye being measured), the difference ∆D occurs as follows.

D' = 1000
l+∆Z

1000 − 1000
∆D = D'−D =
l+∆Z l

≒ -∆Z • D2
1000

When these formulas are applied to each diopter, the following table is obtained.

Alignment difference in Z direction (S value)

D
-20 -15 -10 -5 0 5 10 15 20
∆Z
0.5mm 0.20 0.11 0.05 0.01 0 0.01 0.05 0.11 0.20
1 0.41 0.23 0.10 0.03 0 0.02 0.10 0.22 0.39
2 0.83 0.46 0.20 0.05 0 0.05 0.20 0.44 0.77

The auto. start operation range is set to approx. ±1mm against the reference position. For example, if the ref-
erence value is -15.00D, measurement can be performed at the three steps, -14.75, -15.00 and -15.25D accord-
ing to the above table.
