UNDERSTAND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

1. And one learns this because Cultura literacy is taught at school and at
home, and because it is held up by society.

2. In Guatemala it is Offensive not saying “buen provecho” (bon appetite) after


you finish a meal.

3. In my country it is Customary for a firstborn son to take his father’s name.

4. In some countries it is Impolite to show the sole of your foot to someone, it is


considered disgusting.

5. John has developed his Cultura literacy through his many trips to different
countries.

6. Respect Punctuality when meeting with people, keeping in mind that it is


very important in some cultures.

7. This topic that was once Taboo in Latin America is now being discussed in
homes, villages and political circles.

8. When traveling to another country try to know in advance some important


Etiquette, so you behave properly in meals.

9. When traveling to the U.S. remember people there expect you to respect their
Personal space, so avoid standing too close to an American in a
conversation.

● Wait until all the dishes are finished being served before starting to eat.
● Make a prayer for the blessing of food.
● When you finish eating, you help put dirty dishes in the sink.

2. What are two taboo topics in your country?


● Talk about sexuality to children between the ages of 12 and 15.
● Talking and accepting abortion as something normal when it is not.

3. Is your country strict about punctuality? Explain


● In companies and state entities there is an arrival and departure time
and it has to be respected but many people do not respect those times
and even more so if they are public institutions but everywhere
punctuality is something that is appreciated in person.

1. How old do you estimate Ms. Hartley to be today?
● Mr. Hartley could be between 60 and 70 years old today.

2. Does Ms Hartley prefer the culture of the past or the culture of the present?
● Mrs. Hartley prefers the culture of before, all the customs were nicer, she
could share more with family and friends. There was more respect for all
people compared to today's culture.

3. What is Ms. Hartley’s opinion of t he change in the role of mothers?


● Mothers are now more liberal and less strict with their children, which Ms.
Hartley believes is incorrect since they allow their children to behave without
respect and show that they do not have values ​or good parenting.

4. Does Ms. Hartley approve of the differences in child and teen behavior that
have taken place?
● Mrs. Hartley does not agree how cultures have changed since teenagers do
not behave as they should and do not respect others.
