4 PREVAILING WEATHER CONDITION
The site located at Zayed City, which is part of the coastal plain of UAE along the Arabian Gulf,
where a hot climate prevails. A hot arid climate is one where evaporation exceeds precipitation
such as rain and dewfall. This climate regime produces characteristic hot dessert terrains. Average
annual rainfall may only be a few centimeters (even only a few millimeters in some parts) which
usually occur seasonally and sometimes only form a single cloudburst. Winter shade temperatures
are frequently in excess 20°C and humidity may be around 100% near the coast. The contrast
between maximum night and day temperatures and between night and day humidity is often
great. Strong persistent winds are normal in many areas. This unfavorable climate imposes adverse
conditions on the concrete structures; such as:
The geology of the project area is part of the geology of Arabian Peninsula Gulf which is limited by
four tectonic features, the Red Sea and the Dead Sea rift system to the west, thrust zones from
Alpine Orogeny to the north, mobile belt of the Zagros and Oman mountains system to the east
and south east, and the wrench faults to the south.
Available geological literature indicates that the coastal region of the United Arab Emirates and the
floor of the Arabian Gulf is an area of extensive carbonates sedimentation. Near to surface.
The geology of the western region of UAE is dominated by Aeolian dune sand, Sabkha and
evaporation deposits of Holocene to Pleistocene age. The dune sand deposits typically comprise
fine grained silty calcareous sand. The degree of cementation generally increases with depth, (such
that the variably cemented sand grades to predominantly calcareous sandstone). Very silty
Gypsiferous sabkha and evaporate layers commonly occur within the Aeolian sand deposits.
Sabkha layers, where recent, tend to occur from surface of shallow depth. Surficial Sabkha deposits
are found throughout the coastal belt of the Arabian Gulf, and far inland in the western and
southern part of the United Arab Emirates. Sabkha is a local name used to describe relatively fine
grained super saline, silt and sand deposits, which are commonly saturated with brine, and salt
encrusted. Various formations are found below the Sabkha, Beach & Dune Sand deposits and
Bioclastic Limestone and Miliolite Sandstone. The sandstone layers are followed by conglomerate,
limestone, calcisiltite and siltstone.

The assumed average paved road level is 0.0m.
No details of structural loads were available
Slab-on-grade is recommended to use in this site.
9.2 Foundation
9.2.1 Introduction
As per the client information, the proposed structures will be construction will consist of
service block, majlis, electric room, ground floor, first floor and roof for villa. According to the
results of the fieldwork, laboratory test and the nature of the proposed structure, shallow
foundations by means of (Isolated or Strip or Raft Foundation) can be used to support the
applied column loads as follows:
Considering the encountered soil condition, and in order to minimize expected total and
differential settlements, and to achieve a homogenous and uniform surface below the footings
it is recommended to improve the soil condition at the site by the following:
BL21.WR.RSI.126Rev.1 | Page11
9.2.3 Recommendation
Provided that the soil condition is being improved as specified above an allowable soil bearing
capacity provided in table no. 6 is recommended in the design of the proposed structures on
the compacted granular material.
Table no. 6
Summary of Allowable Bearing Capacities
Foundation Depth BGL, Foundation Depth BRL, Allowable Bearing
Foundation Type
m m Capacity kN/m2
Adequate cover of backfill shall be provided above the top of the foundation to protect the
foundation from erosion and seasonal variation.
The pavement design method outlined in AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures,
1993, is recommended. This method is represented in the form of procedures applicable to
the design of pavement structures, as well as the thickness of the individual structural
components. This method has the advantage of expressing the pavement in terms of
numerical value which allows an easy comparison of various structures to be made.
BL21.WR.RSI.126Rev.1 | Page12
The method takes into consideration the relationship between traffic and traffic loading, sub
grade soil strength, climate conditions, and the properties in an abstract of defined as
structural number of “SN”. It is recommended that flexible pavement be considered for the
proposed roads and parking areas in this project
Generally, a flexible pavement cross section consists of interlocking block followed by crushed
well graded sub base, and by screened or crushed, well graded sub grade over the native soil.
Selective screening and blending could also be used to develop a higher quality base material.
It should be noted, however, that the pavement design is based on the relative quality of the
various layers, starting with the subgrade.
A higher quality base material would result in an increase in the thickness of the base material
and a reduction in the thickness of the wearing surface.
If the designer chooses to use a better quality material for the road base, he can specify the
materials satisfying one of the grading envelopes of ASTM D 1241-89 or similar grading.
The selection of the design strength value is based on the proposed method outlined in the
Asphalt Institute MS-1 “Thickness Design”. The design subgrade CBR% value is defined as the
subgrade strength value that 90% of all the test values are equal to or greater.
1. The native soil in the pavement area shall be proof rolled by heavy vibratory roller &
compacted to 95% of maximum dry density as obtained by modified proctor (ASTM D
1557).
2. The subgrade layer shall be compacted to 95% of maximum dry density as obtained by
modified proctor (ASTM D 1557).
3. The sub base layer shall be compacted to 98% of maximum dry density as obtained by
modified proctor (ASTM D 1557).
4. On the top of sub base, interlocking blocks shall be provided.
5. Protection of the embankment slopes from erosion should be considered at the design
stage particularly at the high and super elevated stretches, if friable materials are used.
6. It is imperative that proper drainage ditch be provided at the cut along the alignment,
and proper surface drainage be provided at the carriageway and be considered at the
design stage.
7. For more, it is recommended to refer to "Standard Specifications for road and bridge
construction, Dec. 1997, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Road Section".
8. Further information customer can contact Basalt Laboratories for Soil Testing.
BL21.WR.RSI.126Rev.1 | Page13
9.3 Excavations and Slopes
Excavations down to depth of about 1.0m BGL are expected across the majority of the site.
Unsupported temporary excavation walls and slopes should be carried out at gradients that
secure their stability. Temporary excavations in the Sand tend to stabilize at their angle of
repose and should have slope gradients of 2.0 horizontal to 1.0 vertical (2.0H: 1.0V).
9.4 Backfilling
In areas where structural fill under the foundations is required (i.e. engineered fill), the
materials should be as specified below.
Liquid limit should not exceed 33% and the plasticity index shall not exceed 10%
The material passing 0.075 mm sieve shall not exceed 20%.
The organic content and Total soluble salt content not more than 2%.
Rock particles shall not exceed 75mm in size.
