Assignment Description

You are required to provide an in-depth strategic analysis of the key benefits of data
analytics in business. You can choose any organisation, for example, an Internet only or a
brick- and-click company. However, this company should be selected because of its
market leader position in the use of data analytics or its innovative way of using data
and data analytics to achieve its corporate goals. You can also choose to write a report on
a company that you want to start, in that case, you must clearly introduce the functions
and activities of the company in the Introduction section.

Your analysis report needs to include the following two parts:

Part one – background: a clear and brief description of the company

Part two – how does the company use data and data analytics to achieve its goals and
objectives, for example, customer satisfaction, sales and inventory, etc. You should
demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the following key areas in this part:

 Big data
 Data visualization
 The benefits of big data and data visualization

The report should follow this template:

Part 1
1. Introduction (500 words)
Introduction of the company and summary of the main activities of the company.

Part 2
2. Business problems and questions (500 words)
Identify and describe the relevant challenges/questions that were answered with data
analytics by the company you choose to analyze. Why did the company choose to
address these issues/questions using data analytics?

Describe the larger innovation and business context (competitors, and regulation).
Identify and clearly express the business relevance and significance of the
problems/questions.

What are the intended outcomes or objectives, and anticipated impacts of addressing this
challenge? Why were these issues significant for the company?

3. Data Collection (500 words)

What type of data did the company rely on to address the identified challenge or question?
Was it external, internal, or data sourced from smart devices (IoT)? How was this data
gathered and processed?

4. Data Analysis (500 words)

Which analytics approach did the company use to answer the challenge/question and why
was this approach chosen? (Please refer to the four analytics types discussed in class up
to the level that you think it’s relevant for the case you’ve selected).

Assignment Description

What did the company find out? If you can’t find any relevant sources for this, please
make your best guess on the types of analytics the company might have used, reflecting
on different analytics mentioned in class (this will not bias your assignment).

5. Practical outcomes // decisions taken (500 words)

How does the company use the data analytics outcomes you outlined above? Give
examples of initiatives and concrete steps the company decided to take due to
knowledge obtained by data analytics.

6. Conclusions and future recommendations for the company (500 words)

Based on the research you conducted, in this section please reflect and formulate strategic
recommendations, in your view, the company should take next.

In your view which research the company should still do? What may be an interesting future
research the company should do?

Reference list – A comprehensive list of resources utilised within the report (not included
in the word count).

How is this assessment marked?

Your work will be marked according to the assessment instructions provided within this
document and the selected ‘Programme-level Learning Outcomes’ (PLOs) (see above).

Furthermore, this assessment is marked in line with YSJ’s Generic Assessment

Descriptors (GAD) or a rubric devised from the GAD (see below). Where a rubric has
been used in place of the GAD, this is to further specify and enhance your understanding
of the expectations of this assessment.

Please note, that you must meet the required baseline standards (50 – 59%) which will
include the PLOs and minimum expectations of the assessment. Further still, you must
ensure you meet the requirements of each grade boundary to progress to the next i.e. you
should demonstrate your learning through the standards of a Pass, Merit, and Distinction
to achieve a Distinction (70 – 100%). These standards are designed to scaffold and build
your learning to achieve your fullest potential in each criterion being assessed.

Each criterion will be allocated a weighting for this assessment. This is to indicate our
expectations of where and how you should focus your efforts, and how marks will be
awarded.
