DISCUSSION

A. Understanding the Peacock Dance

This peacock dance was created in the 1950s by an artist and dance choreographer
from West Java named Raden Tjetje Soemantri. He took the beautiful movements of
peacocks which were then made into a dance. Initially, the creation of this dance was
intended to entertain the delegates of the Asian-African Conference at a reception in Bandung
in 1955. The Peacock Dance movement has meaning as a manifestation of admiration for the
beauty of peacocks in the wild. The Peacock Dance is usually danced by women wearing
very glamorous, aesthetic, exotic clothes and kinesthetic compositions.

This dance is a type of New Creation dance which expresses the life of the peacock,
the procedures and movements of the peacock's life are brought to the stage. The
characteristics of the peacock dance can be seen from the clothes worn by the dancers,
namely clothes whose motif depicts the shape and color of peacock feathers, plus a pair of
wings which also depict peacock wings or tails which are attached to the back of the dancer.
The tips of the wings are attached to the dancer's fingers so that if both hands are stretched, it
will form a peacock spreading its wings. The peacock image will be even clearer with the
crown (badong) placed on each dancer's head. This dance is usually danced in a row, with
three or more dancers each playing the role of a peahen or a male peacock. The
accompaniment to the song is the song Macan Ucul. Among the dances created by R. Tjetje
Somantri, perhaps the peacock dance is the most famous in Indonesia and abroad.

Historically, the Peacock Dance is a traditional dance originating from the West Java
region, the meaning of this peacock dance is in its cheerful and happy movements, so this
peacock dance is always used as an offering dance for guests or to welcome the groom to the
altar, the Peacock Dance is a popular dance in Java and is a new dance creation from Tanah
Pasundan, which was created by Raden Tjetjep Somantri in the 1950s, although this dance is
performed by female dancers, this dance actually depicts the behavior of a male peacock in

become a national identity. Therefore, as Indonesian citizens, of course we have the right and
obligation to participate in maintaining and preserving this culture through all forms of
activities that can advance that culture. Because we must be able to respect our own culture,
