LEVEL: beginner, 3rd Grade
UNIT: 10.Wild things!
LESSON: Animals at the zoo
TIME: 50 minutes
TYPE OF LESSON: mixed (revision+consolidation)
AIDS: laptop, board, textbook, notebook.
SKILLS: speaking, listening, writing
AIMS:
 To introduce and practise vocabulary related to the subject;
 To help students develop their pronunciation skills;
 To encourage students to practice their writing skills;
 At the end of the lesson students will know how to write the new words;
 At the end of the lesson students will be able to use the new words in sentences.

INTERDISCIPLINARY: MUSIC, ARTS, PE

 Teaching methods: explanation, game, question-answer, listening comprehension.

COMPETENCES:

1. Providing an appropriate response in situations of usual communication to a question /


instruction simple spoken clearly and very rarely;
2. Develop interest and general comprehension of films and songs in the English language;
3. Participation in communication games in which they have to reproduce or create short
messages.
4. Understand short, simple written texts used in everyday situations.
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:

 Some students might not know how to read certain words – tell the word for them and
ask them to repeat it.
 Some students might not know how to pronounce the new words – repeat the new
word with them.
 Some students might not understand what they have to do – explain again giving more
examples.

ACTIVITY 1: Warm-up
Aims: 1. To get students’ attention;
2. To practise vocabulary related to the subject
Description:
At the beginning, I will introduce myself to the class.I will use the laptop screen and the
students will see a wheel with images with animals. I will spin the wheel, students name the
animals they know, I will help them if they don’t know the name of the animal, students repeat
after me. We will repeat the process until all of the animals have been identified.

Dialogue:
T:’Hello, my name is Issis and today we will spend time learning together about wild animals.
Let’s start by playing a game.’
S: They will pay attention and will wait for the wheel to stop spinning.
T: ‘What is this?’
S: This is a giraffe, monkey, lion, dog, elephant.

ACTIVITY 2: Listening
Aim: To practise vocabulary related to the subject.
To develop listening and speaking skills.
Description: After reviewing the animals, I will introduce the subject of the lesson through a
video. I will tell the students to watch very carefully, because, after that, I am going to ask

Dialogue:
T: Where is the family?
S: The family is at the zoo.
T: What animal has a long tail?
S: The crocodile has a long tail.

ACTIVITY 3: Simon says


Aim: To revise vocabulary related to animals.
Description:
I will explain to the students how the game works: after the song, they act like the animals
they saw in the video.I will pause the video and if I say ‘Simon says act like an elephant, they
have to act like an elephant. If I say ‘Act like an elephant’, they won’t act like an elephant
because I didn’t say ‘Simon says’. I will start the video and pause for each animal.
Dialogue:
T: ‘Let’s play another game! Do what Simon says! Simon says act like a lion.’
S: The students act like a lion.
T: ‘Act like an elephant.’
S: The students don’t move.

ACTIVITY 4: Listen and read


Aims: To practise vocabulary related to the subject.
To develop listening and reading skills.
Description: We will listen together to the video from the students’ textbook on pages 28-29.
Dialogue:
T: Let’s listen to the video from your textbook. We will listen first, and then you will read
their dialogue silently and answer the questions.
S: The students listen to the video.
T: I will read first the dialogue.
S: The students read after me.

ACTIVITY 5: Vocabulary
Aims: 1.To practise vocabulary;
2. To develop pronunciation and writing skills.
Description : I will tell the students to open their notebooks and to write the title ‘Animals at
the zoo’, the date and the new words as I did on the board. Together, we repeat each word at
least twice. They will pay attention to the presented pictures.
Dialogue:
T: `Please open your notebooks and write (teacher mimes the actions) the date.... (teacher
circles the date), the title....and the new words: monkey, seals, hippo, elephant. Now repeat
after me:’
S: They write on their notebooks the title, the date and the new words and from the board.

ACTIVITY 6: Speaking and reading


Aims: 1.To practise vocabulary;
2. To develop pronunciation and reading skills.
Description: We will look together to the exercice 4 (Talk with your friend) from the students’
textbook on pages 28-29.
T: Look at the hippos. What are they doing?
S: They are eating.
T: Eating? Cool!
We will work in pairs and we will discuss the actions of all the animals in the picture.

ACTIVITY 7: Speaking
Aims: 1.To practise vocabulary;
2. To develop pronunciation skills.
HERE YOU COULD ASK THE STUDENTS TO DESCRIBE, YOU JUST NEED TO GIVE
THEM A MODEL. Description: The game is called ‘What am I? Guess!’ and I will tell you
the description of an animal as an exemple and you will have to guess the animal. Then you
will choose a partener and you will describe an animal and your partener will guess it.
T: I am green.I’ve got a long tail and a big mouth. I can swim. What am I?
S: A crocodile.

ACTIVITY 8 : Draw and write – extra activity


Aim: Practise vocabulary; to practice writing skills; to encourage students to manifest interest
towards English, by drawing.
Description: I will share coloring sheets to each student. After they finish coloring, they will
need to write down which animal they colored.
