EEE F111: ELECTRICAL SCIENCES (1st Sem 2022 – 23)

TUTORIAL- 1

Topic: Work, Power, Energy, interpretation of SI units

1. An object of 3 Kg mass at rest, is given a push at an acceleration of 3 m/s 2

horizontally. Find the force, distance, work done, and power after t=2 sec.
2. Obtain the work and power required to move a 5 kg object up a frictionless
plane inclined at an angle of 300 with the horizontal, for a distance of 2m along
the plane in a time of 3.5s.
3. A mass of 10 kg is raised by means of rope passing around a pulley wheel of
0.5 m diameter. Calculate the work done when the pulley makes 50 revolutions.
4. The force applied on a certain object along x direction varies according to
F=12/x2 Newtons. Then find the work done in the interval 1 ≤ x ≤ 3 m. Also,
what is the force at a distance of 2 m for same amount of work?
5. Two identical charges of 0.1C are placed apart by 1m on a horizontal plane in
free space. Find the force, field intensity and potential.
6. The charge flowing through a certain conducting medium is as shown in the
below figure. Draw the current.

7. A cumulative charge comprising 1020 electrons are flowing through a

conducting medium of 1m length, for 10 sec. Find the electric current, electric
potential difference between the end points of the conducting medium, electric
power and energy. Assume Ɛr = 1.
8. A wind power plant is operating at an efficiency of 70%. If the average wind
speed is 14 m/s and length of the blade is 63m, then find the wind energy
available at the blade and electrical power generated by the wind power plant.
Take air density ρ = 1.23 kg/m3. [Power of wind is given by Pw = 𝜌𝐴𝑉 3 , with A
as area of blade sweep and V is the wind velocity]
9. A thermal power generating plant spends Rs.30 lakhs per annum for coal used
in the station. The coal has a calorific value of 5000 kcal/kg and costs Rs. 300
ton, if the thermal efficiency of the plant is 33% and the electrical efficiency is
90%, then calculate the electric power generated per annum.
10. The output of a hydro-electric power station which is supplying its full load for
10 hours a day is 100 MW. The power generation in the station is done at an
efficiency of 80% with an effective water level in the reservoir as 200 m. Then
what is the volume of water existing in the reservoir?
Practice Problems

Q1. In a simple rectilinear motion, a 10 Kg mass is given constant acceleration of 2m/s2 (a) Find
the acting force F, (b) If the body was at rest at t = 0 and x = 0, find the position, kinetic energy
and power when t = 4s.

Q2. A body having a mass of 30Kg is supported 50m above the earth’s surface. What is its
potential energy relative to the ground? If the body is allowed to fall freely, calculate its kinetic
energy just before it touches the ground. Assume gravitational acceleration to be 9.81m/s2.

Q3. A body of mass 10 tonnes is acted upon by a force of 1 kN. How long will it take for the
body to reach a speed of 5 m/s.

Q4. The engine in a small airplane is specified to have a torque of 60 Nm. This engine drives
a propeller whose moment of inertia is 13.3 kgm2. On startup, how long does it take the
propeller to reach 200 rpm.

Q5. A lift of 25Kg mass is raised with a velocity of 5m/s. If the driving motor has an efficiency
of 85%, calculate the input power to the motor? What is the current drawn by the motor if the
voltage is 230V?

Q6. An electric motor is developing 10KW at a speed of 900rpm. Calculate the torque available
at the shaft?

Q7. A conductor has a constant current of 5 A. How many electrons pass a fixed point on the
conductor in one minute?

Q8. A resistor has a potential difference of 50V across its terminals and 120C of charge per
minute passes a fixed point. Under these conditions at what rate is electric energy converted to
heat?

Q9. The current flowing through a circuit element is given by i(t) = 8t + 3 mA. How much charge
passed through the element between the time t = 0 and t = 2s?

Q10. A generating station has a daily output of 280MWh and uses 500 tonnes of coals in the
process. The coal releases 7MJ/Kg when burnt. Calculate the overall efficiency of the station.

Q11. A 200 tonnes train experiences wind resistance equivalent to 62.5 N/t. The operating
efficiency of the driving motors is 87% and the cost of electrical energy is 8p/KWh. What is
the cost of energy required to make the train travel 1Km? If the train is supplied at a constant
voltage of 1.5kV and travels with a velocity of 80Km/h, what is the supply current?

Q12. A typical average monthly consumption of a house is as shown in table 1. The house
owner uses the following appliances during the month of January. (a) Determine the electricity
bill for the month using the following residential rate schedule:
Base monthly charge of 200Rs/-
First 100kWh per month at 2 Rs/kWh
Next 200kWh per month at 4 Rs/kWh
Remaining kWh per month at 6.69 Rs/ kWh
(b) Compare the average cost per unit for this month and for the month of July, where only
350kWh are consumed as he and his family was on vacation most of the time.
