PHONETICS AS

PART OF
LINGUISTICS
NA
When you wants to learn a foreign language, for example English, you will have to
speak it. You have to try to speak in the way the native speakers speak the language.
They also have to be able to discriminate the contrastive sounds units, that distinguish
one utterance from another, the production level and on the recognition level.
Imitation alone is sometimes not suf ficient. People who learns a foreign language
should know a theory of phonetics, which tell them about the general mechanism of
producing the foreign speech sounds by means of their speech organs
LANGUAGE
Language a system of
conventional spoken,
manual (signed), or
written symbols by
means of which human
beings, as members of a
social group and
participants in its culture,
express themselves.
The functions of
language include
communication, the
expression of identity,
play imaginative
expression, and
emotional release.
Language’s also an
arbitrary vocal symbols
used as a means of
communication.
PHONETICS

phonetics, the study of

speech sounds and their
physiological production and
acoustic qualities also
without regard to their
function. It deals with the
configurations of the vocal
tract used to produce
speech sounds (articulatory
phonetics)and the acoustic
properties of speech sounds
(acoustic phonetics).
ARTICULATORY PHONETICS
Articulatory phonetics is the branch of phonetics concerned with describing the speech
sounds of the world's languages in terms of their articulations, that is, the movements
and/or positions of the vocal organs (articulators). The most influential system of
articulatory description and transcription of speech sounds has been that of the
International Phonetic Association (IPA), which aims to provide a phonetic symbol for every
phoneme for every language. In the IPA tradition, speech is characterized as sequences of
separate speech segments (consonants and vowels), and each sound is defined as a
combination of articulatory phonetic properties. Several laboratory techniques are used to
obtain knowledge about the articulations of speech sounds, which in turn is used in
modeling of speech production itself, and of articulatory-acoustic relations. Basically,
articulatory phoneticians make a study on the interaction of various organs of speech and
their role in producing different sounds. These parts are also known as Articulators.
The main articulators are the tongue, the upper lip, the lower lip, the upper teeth, the upper
gum ridge (alveolar ridge), the hard palate, the velum (soft palate), the uvula (free-hanging
end of the soft palate), the pharyngeal wall, and the glottis (space between the vocal cords)
ACOUSTIC PHONETICS
Acoustic phonetics is the study of the physical properties of speech, and aims to
analyse sound wave signals that occur within speech through varying frequencies,
amplitudes and durations. acoustic phoneticsnounthe branch of science dealing with
the sounds of speech in terms of their frequency, duration, intensity, etc., especially as
analyzed by means of instruments like the sound spectrograph and the
oscillograph.Compare articulatory phonetics.a composite branch of physics and
linguistics that treats sound proper as it relates to speech.the branch of phonetics
dealing with the transmission of sounds to the ear and the reception of them by the ear
prior to neurological processing.
For example, you may well hear the thumping of the bass drum before all else. This is
because a sound produced at one place, say a loudspeaker, sets up a sound wave that
travels through the acoustic medium.
BE A GOOD LISTENER
Before learning to speak you must learn to listen. English words are sometimes very
dif ficult to hear such as sleep and slip, chin and shin, and many more. If you can tell the
difference, it will make it easier for you to pronounce. You can learn to listen through
Youtube, Podcasts , or other content on the internet that is in English. Don't forget not
to use subtitles so you can develop your listening and pronunciation skills .
LEARN
PHONETIC
SYMBOLS

To improve your
pronunciation skills , you can
learn phonetic symbols.
Phonetic symbols are
symbols that are useful in
explaining how sounds are
formed. Why is there a
phonetic symbol? More
specifically, the phonetics of
symbols are used to
determine how to read a word.
With the phonetics of
symbols we can know exactly
how the sound of a word.
CHOOSE AN ENGLISH ACCENT
THAT SUITS YOU
English accents are very diverse and in each dialect has a different pronunciation, word,
and even slang . So before you decide to learn English, determine one of the accents
you want to master so that your journey in learning is easier and more structured. The
most common English accents are American English and British English . These two
accents have an influence on your journey to learn English. In the American accent the
R produced at the end of a word is louder than the famous English accent with the
silent R. Choose an accent that suits you whether it's American, British, Australian or
something else, it doesn't matter. However, this is not the same as removing your
original accent, yes. Slang and accent have different meanings. You can use an
American accent with a Javanese accent, you know. So, be proud of your natural accent!
PRACTICE WITH FRIEND
As in the English term "Practice makes perfect" which means the best way to hone a
skill is to practice without stopping. Find a partner to practice pronunciation. Make sure
your partner has the same interests so you can grow together.
