& PROBABILITY

Mark Kevin C. Samson, LPT

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able
to:
• illustrates a normal random variable and its

characteristics.
• constructs a normal curve.

• identifies regions under the normal curve

corresponding to different standard normal

values.

Review: Mean, Variance, & Standard Deviation
1. It is defined as the expected value.

2. Variance is a “measure of central
tendency”.

3. A measurement that defines the
distance of data from the mean.

4. The length between the ‘highest
score’ and “lowest score”

Let’s Explore
Statistical Situation:

Teacher Beth wants to determine whether

the scores of her students in three sections
in a Chapter Test in Statistics are normally
distributed. She computed the mean,
median, and mode and graph them as
follows:
Let’s Explore
Question:
Which among the sections
contain scores that are evenly
distributed?
When the data values are evenly
distributed, the mean distribution is said to
be “SYMMETRIC DISTRIBUTION”.
When the data values falls either to the left or
right of the mean, the distribution is said to
“skewed”.
Skewness is the measure of symmetricity or
asymmetricity of the data values.

Negatively Skewed Positively Skewed

Normally Skewed in other words

“NORMAL DISTRIBUTION”
Let’s Discuss

Properties of a Normal Distribution

1. A normal distribution curve is bell-shaped.
2. The mean, median, and mode are all located
at the center.
3. The curve is symmetric.
4. The curve is continuous.
5. The total area of the curve is 1 or 100%
6. The distribution follows a 68-95-99.7 rule.

Kurtosis means “how peak/flat the curve is?”

Let’s Practice

Find the area under the normal curve

a. Above z = - 2 or P(z > -2)
b. z =1 and z = 2.05 P(1< z < 2.05)
c. Below z = -1.76
d. Between z = -1.01 and z = 2.13
Let’s Practice
A continuous random variable X is normally
distributed with a mean of 45 and standard
deviation of 6. Illustrate a normal curve and
find the probability of the following:
a. P(39 < X <51)
b. P( X > 45)
c. P( X< 39)
Let’s Apply

1. A certain type of storage battery lasts on

the average of 3.0 years with a standard
deviation of 0.5 year. If there are a total of
500 batteries being tested, find the number of
batteries that were expected to last between
3.5 and 4.5 years?
Let’s Apply

2. A radar unit is used to measure speed of

cars on a motorway. The speed are normally
distributed with a mean of 90 km/hr. and a
standard deviation of 10 km/hr. How many
cars are expected to travel between 70 to
110 km/hr. if the radar has recorded 1000
car units?
