Part – B (513=65 Marks)

11. a) Explain the various kinematic inversions of slider crank mechanism. (13)

(OR)
b) Classify cams and draw the displacement diagrams for various followers
motions. (13)

12. a) In an epicyclic gear train, an arm carries two gears A and B having 36 and 45
teeth respectively. If the arm rotates at 150 rpm in the anticlockwise direction
about the centre of the gear A which is fixed, determine the speed of gear B.
If the gear A instead of being fixed makes 300 rpm in the clockwise direction,
what will be the speed of gear B ? Find by Tabular and Algebraic methods. (13)

(OR)
b) The following data refers to two mating involute gears of 20º pressure angle.
Number of teeth on pinion : 20
Gear ratio :2
Speed of pinion : 250 rpm
Module : 12 mm
If the addendum of each wheel is such that the path of approach and path of
recess on each side are half the maximum possible length, find
i) addendum for both the wheels, (3)
ii) length of arc of contact, (4)
iii) contact ratio, (1)
iv) the maximum sliding velocity, (2)
v) angle turned through by the pinion and (1)
vi) angle turned through by the gear wheel, when one pair of teeth is in
contact. (2)

13. a) A load of 10 kN is raised by means of a screw jack, having a square threaded

screw of 12 mm pitch and of mean diameter 50 m. If a force of 100 N is
applied at the end of a lever to raise the load, what should be the length of the
lever of the lever used ? Coefficient of friction = 0.15. What is the mechanical
advantage obtained ? State whether the screw is self locking or not. (13)

b) A leather belt is required to transmit 9 kW from a pulley 1.2 m in diameter
running at 200 rpm. The angle of constant is spread over 11/24 of the
circumference and the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley
rim is 0.3. If the safe working stress for the leather belt is 1.4 MN/m2, the
density of the leather is 1000 kg/m3, and the thickness of belt is 10 mm,
determine the width of the belt taking the centrifugal tension into account. (13)

14. a) The ratio of the connecting rod length to crank length for a vertical petrol
engine is 4:1. The bore/stroke is 80/100 mm and mass of the reciprocating
part is 1kg. The gas pressure on the piston is 0.5 N/mm2 when it has moved
10 mm from the TDC on its power stroke. Determine the net head on the
gudgeon pin, the engine runs at 1800 rpm. what engine speed will this load
be zero ? (13)
(OR)
b) The dimensions of a four- link mechanism are AB = 500 mm, BC = 660 mm,
CD = 560 mm and AD = 1000 mm. The link AB has an angular velocity
of 10.5 rad/s counter-clockwise and an angular retardation of 26 rad/s2 at
the instant when it makes an angle of 60º with AD, the fixed link. The mass
of the links BC and CD is 4.2 kg/m length. The link AB has a mass of 3.54
kg, the centre of which lies at 200 mm from A and a moment of inertia of
88,500 kgmm2. Neglecting the gravity and friction effects, determine the
instantaneous value of the drive torque required to be applied on AB to
overcome the inertia forces. (13)

b) A four cylinder in-line marine oil engine has cranks at regular displacements
of 90º. The outer cranks are 3 m apart and inner cranks are 1.2 m apart.
The inner cranks are placed symmetrically between the outer cranks.
The length of each crank is 450 mm. If the engine runs at 90 rpm and
the mass of reciprocating parts for each cylinder is 900 kg; find the firing
order of the cylinders for the best primary balancing force of reciprocating
masses. Determine the maximum unbalanced primary couple for the best
arrangement. (13)

b) A mass of 98.1 N is suspended from one end of a helical spring, the other end
of the spring being fixed. The stiffness of the spring is 98.1 N/cm. Viscous
damping causes the amplitude to decrease to one-tenth of the initial value in
four complete oscillations. If a periodic force of 147.2 cos 50t N is applied at
the mass in the vertical direction, find the amplitude of the forced vibrations.
