BANKING OF ROADS:
To avoid the risk of skidding as well as to reduce the wear and tear of the

the road is raised above its inner side. This is called banking of road.
When a vehicle tends to make a turn along a curved road, there is a
probability of it skidding. For making a safe turn, the vehicle requires a
centripetal force. The banking of a road is done to provide that centripetal
force. During a “banked” or inclined turn, the chances of skidding reduce.

35 Case Study: Read the following paragraph and answer the
questions.
The mass of a body resists a change in its state of linear motion, it is a
measure of inertia in linear motion. Similarly, the moment of inertia of a
body about an axis of rotation resists a change in its rotational motion.
The greater the moment of inertia of a body, the greater is the torque
required to change its state of rotation. It is a measure of rotational
inertia of a body. The moment of inertia(I) of rigid body about a fixed axis
is defined as the sum of the products of the masses of the particles
constituting the body and the squares of their respective distances from
the axis of rotation.
The moment of inertia(I) of rigid body about a fixed axis is given by :
2 2 2
I = m1 r 1+ m2 r 2 +.. … … mn r n
Where m1,m2…………mn are the masses of the particles constituting the
body and r1,r2………….rn are the perpendicular distances of particles from
axis of rotation.
(i) If a person sitting on a rotating stool with his hands outstretched,
suddenly lowers his hands, then how his moment of inertia & angular
speed of rotation change?
(ii) State any two factors on which moment of inertia of a body depends.
(iii) Four balls each of radius 1 cm

kg are attached to the periphery of
massless plate of radius 1m. What
is moment of inertia of the system
about the centre of plate?

mass m are placed at the corners
