[ACE-102]
B. Architecture Degree Examination
II SEMESTER
STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
(From the admitted batches 2019–20)
Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 50
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------
Instructions: All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only.
Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------
Section-A
1. Answer all the questions: (52=10)
a) Define Poisson's ratio and write the equation.
b) Draw shear force diagram for simply supported beam of
length 6m supporting 150kN point load at center.
c) Write the equation of minor principal stress.
d) Write bending formula and explain each term in it.
e) Write basic assumptions made in deriving torsion formula.
Section-B
Answer the following: (58=40)
UNIT-I
2. a) A bar 500mm long and 22mm in diameter is elongated by
1.2mm under the effect of axial pull of 105 KN. Calculate
stress and strain.
b) An alloy bar 1m long and 200mm2 in cross section is subjected
to compressive force of 20KN. If the modulus of elasticity is
100GPa. Find decrease in the length of bar.
OR
3. A steel rod, 20 mm diameter and 1.5 m long, is constrained between
supports A and B. The material is stress-free at 27° C. Determine the
stress in the material when the temperature increases to 50°C (a) if the
supports are unyielding and (b) if the support at B yields by 0.1 mm.

E for steel = 200 GPa and α for steel = 12 x 10-6/°C.

UNIT-II
4. A simply supported beam 8 m long carries a uniformly distributed
load of 20 kN/m over the whole span. Calculate the Shear Force and
Bending Moment at quarter-span points and at the middle of the span.
OR
5. Draw bending moment and shear force diagram of a cantilever beam
having AB 4 meters long having its fixed end at A and loaded with a
uniformly distributed load of 1 kN/m up to 2 meters from A and with
a concentrated load of 2 kN at 1 m from B.
UNIT-III
6. Given the state of stress shown, determine the stress components acting
on the inclined plane a-a.

OR
7. For the state of stress shown, determine the principal stresses and the
principal directions.

UNIT-IV
8. A simply supported beam 150mm wide and 300mm deep
carries an uniformly distributed load over a span of 4m If
the safe stresses are 28 MPa in bending and 2MPa in shear.
Find the maximum uniformly distributed load that can be
safely supported by the beam.
OR
9. A circular has 50 mm diameter carries shear force of 120 KN find
Average and max shear stress.
UNIT-V
10. Find the Power that a solid shaft of 100 mm diameter running at
500 rpm can transmit, if angle of twist is 1.5 degrees in a length
of 2m. Take G=70 GPa.
OR
11. A solid circular shaft of 100mm diameter transmits 120KW at
200 rpm. Find the maximum shear stress and angle of twist for
a length of 6m. Take G=80 GPa.
