1. Factorize the following:
(a) 2𝑥 3 + 7𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + 3 (b) 𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 6 (c) 6𝑥 3 − 13𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 2
(d) 𝑥 3 + 1 (e) 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 − 8 (f) 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 2 (g) 𝑥 3 − 1
2. If 𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 + 6 is divided by 𝑥 + 1, the remainder is 12. Find the value of 𝑎 and
factorize the expression.
3. The expression 2𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 1 is exactly divisible by 2𝑥 − 1 and 𝑥 + 1.
Find the value of 𝑎 and 𝑏 and hence find the third factor of the expression.
4. The remainder when 𝑥(𝑥 + 𝑏)(𝑥 − 2𝑏) is divided by 𝑥 − 𝑏 is −16. Find the
value of 𝑏.
5. Solve the equations
(a) 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 = 1 (b) 𝑥 3 − 9𝑥 2 + 26𝑥 = 24 (c) 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 = 2
(d) 𝑥 3 = 13𝑥 + 12 (e) 𝑥 2 (2𝑥 + 1) = 13𝑥 − 6
6. Find the 𝑥 − coordinates of the points where the line 𝑦 = 5𝑥 − 1 meets the
curve 𝑦 = 2𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 + 1.
7. Find the coordinates of the points of intersection of the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 3 and the
line 𝑦 = 7𝑥 + 6.
8. If 4𝑥 3 − 11𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 7 = (𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵)(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 3) + 𝐶 for all values of 𝑥,
evaluate 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶.
9. Given that 𝑥 + 2 is a factor of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 4 + 𝑝 find the value of
𝑝 and hence factorize 𝑓(𝑥).
10. If 2𝑥 3 − 7𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 5 = 𝐴(𝑥 − 1)3 + 𝐵𝑥(𝑥 − 1) + 𝐶 for all values of 𝑥,
evaluate 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶.
