KEV CONCEPTS (LOGARITIHM)
TINGS To REMEMIRER:
LOGARITUM OF A NUMBER!
REMEMBER
The logarthm of the number N to the base 'a' is the exponent indicating
the power to which the base 'a' must be raised to obtain the number N. log,,2 -0.3010
This number is designated as log, N. log,3 -0.4771
Henoe: log N N¢ a N , a > 0 , a &N>0 In 2 = 0.693
In 10= 2.303
If a- 10,then we wite logb rather than log,,b
If a -e, we write Inb rather than log, b.
The existenoce and uniqucness of the number log, Nfollows from the properties of an exponential
finctions.
From the definition of the logarithm ofthe number Nto the base 'a', we have an
identity: a N . a>0, a# 1 & N>0
This is known as the FUNDAMENTAL LoGARITHMIC IDENTITY
NoTE :log l=0 (a >0, a#1)
log, a = 1 (a>0, a 1) and
log, a=-1 (a>0, a1)
2. THE PRINCIPAL PROPERTIES OF LOGARITHMS:
Let M&N are arbitrary posiitive numbers, a0, a 1,b0zb1and a is any real number
then ;
) log, (M.N) =log, M+log, N Aog, (M/N) =log, M- log, N
(i) log, M" = a.log, M (iv) log, M= log, M
log b
NoTE: log,a. logb=1 log,a1log,b. log,a. log,b. log,c= 1
log, x.log,y . log,z log,x. e = aX
3. %PROPERTIEs OF MONOTONOCITY OF
LOGARITHM:
() For a>1 the inequality 0<x<y &log x< log, y are equivalent.
(i) For 0 <a <l the inequality 0<X<y & log, x> log, yare equivalent.
(ii) If a> 1 then log, x<p 0<x<aP
(iv) If a>1 then log,x >p X> aP
(v) If 0 <a<Ithen log, x<P X> aP
(vi) If 0<a<Ithen log,x>p 0<x<aP
NOTE THAT:
Ifthe number &the base are on one side of the unity, then the logarithm is positive; Ifthe
the base are on different sides of unity, then the logarithm is negative. number &
The base of the logarithm 'a' mustnot equal unityotherwise numbers not equal to unity
a logarithm & any number will be the logarithm of unity. will not have
For a non negative number 'a' & n22, neN Va =alh.
Willbe covered in detail in QUADRATICEQAUTION
