Introduction to Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology, an ancient and revered system of celestial

interpretation, traces its origins back thousands of years to the
sacred texts of India, particularly the Vedas, which are among the
oldest scriptures known to humanity. Known as Jyotish in Sanskrit,
meaning "the science of light," Vedic astrology is not merely a
predictive tool but a holistic system that delves into the intricate
relationship between cosmic energies and individual destinies.

At its core, Vedic astrology operates on the premise that the

positions and movements of celestial bodies at the time of a
person's birth influence their life path and personality. Unlike its
Western counterpart, which primarily emphasizes the Sun sign,
Vedic astrology considers the positions of the Moon, the
Ascendant-Lagna, and the planets within the twelve zodiac signs
at the moment of birth. This comprehensive approach offers a
multifaceted understanding of an individual's character, strengths,
weaknesses, and life events.

Central to Vedic astrology is the concept of karma, the belief that

our actions in past lives shape our present circumstances and
future destiny. According to this worldview, the planetary positions
in one's birth chart reflect the karmic patterns one is destined to
encounter and navigate throughout their lifetime. Through the
analysis of these patterns, Vedic astrologers seek to provide
insights into an individual's life purpose, potential challenges, and
opportunities for growth.

Vedic astrology encompasses a wide array of techniques and

branches, each serving a unique purpose in understanding and
interpreting the cosmic influences on human life. Natal astrology,
known as Jataka, focuses on analyzing an individual's birth chart

Predictive astrology, or Prasna, offers guidance on specific

Difference Between Western Astrology and Vedic Astrology

Western astrology and Vedic astrology, while both systems of

celestial interpretation, differ in several key ways, including their
philosophical foundations, techniques, and approach to
interpreting astrological charts.

Philosophical Foundations:

Western Astrology: Western astrology, rooted in Greco-Roman

traditions, is largely based on the tropical zodiac, which is aligned
with the Earth's seasons. It places significant emphasis on the
position of the Sun at the time of birth (Sun sign astrology), along
with the positions of the other planets within the zodiac signs.

Vedic Astrology: Vedic astrology, also known as Jyotish, originates

from ancient Indian scriptures, particularly the Vedas. It operates
on the sidereal zodiac, which considers the fixed positions of the
stars in relation to the Earth. Vedic astrology places equal
importance on the positions of the Moon and other planets
alongside the Sun, and it incorporates the concept of lunar nodes
(Rahu and Ketu) as significant factors in chart interpretation.

Zodiac Systems:

Western Astrology: The Western zodiac is divided into twelve

equal segments of 30 degrees each, with each segment
representing a zodiac sign. The signs are named after
constellations that were present along the ecliptic at the time of the
Babylonians.

Vedic Astrology: The Vedic zodiac is divided into twelve unequal

segments, or rashis, each approximately 30 degrees in length.
These segments are aligned with specific fixed stars, and the
starting point (0 degrees of Aries) is based on the position of the
vernal equinox.

House Systems:

Western Astrology: Western astrology commonly uses several

house systems, such as Placidus, Equal, and Whole Sign, to
divide the celestial sphere into twelve houses. The house
placement of planets and other celestial bodies provides additional
information about different areas of life.

Vedic Astrology: Vedic astrology typically uses the Whole Sign

house system, where each sign occupies one whole house. This
approach simplifies house placement interpretation and aligns with
the concept of sign-based prediction.

Predictive Techniques:

Western Astrology: Western astrology employs various predictive

techniques, including transits (current positions of planets relative
to natal positions), progressions (advancement of the natal chart
based on symbolic movement), and aspects (angular relationships
between planets).

Vedic Astrology: Vedic astrology utilizes a range of predictive

techniques, such as dasas (planetary periods) and gochara
(transits), along with divisional charts (vargas) for detailed analysis
of specific life areas.

Remedial Measures:

Western Astrology: While Western astrology acknowledges the

potential for personal growth and self-awareness, it typically does
not emphasize specific remedial measures. Instead, it focuses on
understanding psychological patterns and tendencies.

Vedic Astrology: Vedic astrology often prescribes remedial

measures, known as upayas, to mitigate negative influences and
enhance positive planetary energies. These may include wearing
gemstones, performing rituals, chanting mantras, or observing
specific astrological timings.

While both Western and Vedic astrology share a common goal of

providing insights into individual destinies and cosmic influences,
their distinct philosophical backgrounds and methodologies result
in unique approaches to chart interpretation and prediction.

Calculating the Vedic Astrology Chart

To calculate the Vedic astrology chart, one can generate a natal

chart wheel using free chart generating websites such as
Astro.com - Extended Chart Selection. By inputting your birth data
and selecting the "Round" tab, you can generate and view your
chart.

In the section covering the Zodiac and houses, there are several
options available.

The Zodiac refers to the band of the sky divided into twelve
sections, each named after a constellation. This configuration
serves as a useful reference point for locating and studying
celestial objects in the sky, with each division being connected to a
particular sign.

A constellation is a recognizable pattern of stars often named after

a mythological figure or creature. The stars that make up a
constellation are not physically close to one another in space but
appear so in the sky because of their similar distances from Earth
and relative position. There are 88 officially recognized
constellations in modern astronomy, with numerous cultural groups
throughout history having named them. Some well-known
constellations include Orion, Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor,
Draco, Cygnus, Triangulum, Andromeda, Perseus, Pegasus,

Cetus, Aquila, Lyra, Hercules, Corona Borealis, Bootes, Delphinus,
Crater, Sextans, Coma Berenices, and Centaurus.

The Zodiac constellations are a subset of the 88 constellations and

are a set of twelve constellations aligned along the ecliptic, the
path of the Sun across the sky. Each of these constellations is
connected to a particular sign in astrology. The twelve Zodiac
constellations are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra,
Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

The two primary zodiac systems commonly utilized are the

Tropical and the Sidereal. The Tropical zodiac is founded on the
Sun's location relative to the Earth's equator, with 12 equal 30-
degree segments referred to as the signs of the zodiac, commonly
used in Western astrology. The Tropical zodiac is often seen as a
Geocentric system, meaning it is based on the Sun's position
relative to the Earth. However, a Heliocentric (sun-centered)
perspective can also be employed to interpret the Tropical zodiac,
considering the Earth's location relative to the Sun, providing an
alternative view of the astrological chart.

Both the Geocentric and Heliocentric perspectives offer distinct

interpretations and insights into the astrological chart, and
astrologers use them to gain a more profound comprehension of
an individual's chart.

The Sidereal zodiac, on the other hand, is based on the position of

the stars relative to the Earth. It is used in Hindu astrology, Jyotish
and is divided into 12 segments, called the rashi. The signs are
Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka
(Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika
(Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha
(Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces).

Once you select the Sidereal zodiac, then you have to choose the
Ayanamsha. The Ayanamsha is the precessional distance
regarding the precession of the equinoxes. The most accurate
Ayanamshas are Hindu/Lahiri and Chitra-Paksha or true Citra.

Make sure to select the Descending Node - South Node - Ketu, as

it is important in the Vedic astrology interpretation.

Both zodiacs can be calculated with or without taking into account

the light-time correction, which factors in the time taken for light to
travel from a planet to an observer, affecting the planet's apparent
position as seen from Earth. This correction is particularly
important for outer planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune, and Pluto, as well as distant asteroids. Astrologers who
prioritize accuracy generally prefer to incorporate the light-time
correction, and we have chosen to adopt this approach. Failing to
apply this correction may result in slightly imprecise positions of
these celestial bodies, potentially impacting the interpretation of
the chart.

Which zodiac best describes the personality traits and life

experiences of an individual? Both the Tropical and Sidereal
zodiac systems are used in astrology, but neither is considered
more accurate in describing personality traits and life experiences.
It is up to the individual to determine which system resonates
better.

Choosing The House System

While the position of solar system planets in the 12 constellations

of the zodiac is real and observable, the positions of planets in
houses have been completely invented by astrologers and are not
based on astronomical observations. This is why popular website
Astro.com only provides two main methods for calculating
planetary positions in constellations (Tropical and Sidereal), while
there are over 20 house systems.

The house system in astrology divides the sky into 12 equal parts,
called houses, to map the positions of celestial bodies at the time

of a person's birth. Each house represents a specific area of life
and the positions of celestial bodies within these houses are
thought to indicate the areas of life that they will influence. All
house systems are based on the Ascendant, which is used to
determine the first house.

The Ascendant, also known as the rising sign, is the zodiac sign
that was rising on the eastern horizon at the time of a person's
birth. The Ascendant is calculated by finding the point where the
ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun through the sky) intersects
with the eastern horizon at the time of birth.

The first house system created by ancient astrologers was the

Whole house system. This system considers the entire zodiac sign
containing the Ascendant as the first house, with the following sign
as the second house, and so on. Each house is assigned a sign in
zodiacal order and covers 30 degrees. So in the Whole house
system, it does not matter which degree the Ascendant is, that
sign will always correspond to the first house.

From the Whole house system, two other house systems have
evolved:
The Equal house system. In this system, the first house starts at
the exact degree of the Ascendant and last for 30-degree. If the
Ascendant is at 17 degree Capricorn, the first house starts there
and finish at 17 degree of the following sign (Aquarius). Each
house spans 30 degrees of the zodiac. All the planets positioned in
this range fall in the first house.

The Vehlow house system. In this system, the Ascendant is

exactly in the middle of first house. If the Ascendant is at 17
degree Capricorn, the first house starts 15 degree before (2
degree) and finishes after 15 degree (2 degree Aquarius) Each
house spans 30 degrees of the zodiac. All the planets positioned in
this range fall in the first house.

The default option in Vedic astrology is the Whole system (see

image above).

In the realm of astrology, a "cusp" signifies the initial point or

dividing line between two houses in a natal chart. The zodiac sign
located on the cusp provides valuable information about how an
individual views and approaches the areas of life governed by the
particular house. These life domains could include but are not
limited to, relationships, career, home, and family.

While all house systems are utilized in astrology, none of them are
deemed more precise in characterizing an individual's personality
traits and life experiences. The way planets' locations in the
houses are interpreted is a matter of personal opinion. Therefore, it
is up to the individual to decide which system aligns with their
values and yields the most valuable insights.
