Physical Activity

Almost everyone considers maintaining good health to be of utmost importance due to its

direct correlation with one's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As a result, a growing

number of people are attempting to maintain a healthy lifestyle, becoming health conscious, and

participating in maintaining a healthy diet. An equally important factor in maintaining good

health is engaging physical activity on a regular basis, regardless of the duration or kind, such as

sports, physical exercise, gymnastics, and workouts. Physical activities promote physical and

mental health and prevent diseases.

The first advantage of doing physical activity is its physical benefits. Regular participation in

physical exercise strengthens the heart and promotes its pumping capacity (Strømme et al.,

1982). Moreover, engaging in regular physical activity increases the capacity of the muscles

(Strømme e al., 1982). As a result, oxygen reaches the tissues, and the heart and lung work

efficiently. After a workout or physical activity, I personally feel like I have more energy to

complete my tasks, and I do not feel dull and tired.

Physical activity also has mental health benefits, such as reduced anxiety and improved self-

image. Stress and anxiety have become parts of our lives today. However, whenever I feel down

and stressed, I go for a run or engage in a different type of physical activity, and my mood

improves and my anxiety reduces considerably. Experiments and research indicate that

exercising frequently results in a person having a more positive body image and attitude toward

their body, which leads to better mental health (Strømme et al., 1982).

The last advantage of exercise is that it keeps illnesses from developing and endangering our

health. Fentem states that “a sedentary lifestyle is an independent risk factor for coronary heart

disease and stroke. High amounts of habitual physical activity reduce the individual risk for both
conditions” (Fentem, 1994, p. 1291). When a person engages in any kind of physical activity on

a regular basis, their risk of having a stroke increases over time. Since it regulates blood pressure

and prevents cholesterol concentration, it allows easier movement of the blood to the heart and

other organs (Fentem, 1994). Therefore, physical activity prevents terrible diseases and protects

one from them in the long term.

To summarize, physical activity provides numerous health benefits. It guarantees a person's

mental health in addition to enabling them to maintain physical fitness. It alleviates anxiety and

boosts mood. Ultimately, the primary advantage of physical activity is its ability to avert the

long-term development of diseases.
