CHAPTER-2
ELECTROSTATIC POTENTIAL AND CAPACITANCE

SECTION A (1Mark)
MCQ
1. A test charge is moved from lower potential point to a higher potential point. The
potential energy of test charge will
(a) remain the same
(b) increase
(c) decrease
(d) become zero
2. Which of the following statement is true?
(a) Electrostatic force is a conservative force.
(b) Potential at a point is the work done per unit charge in bringing a charge from any
point to infinity.
(c) Electrostatic force is non-conservative
(d) Potential is the product of charge and work.

ASSERTION REASON
Directions: These questions consist of two statements, each printed as Assertion and
Reason. While answering these questions, you are required to choose any one of the
following four responses.
(a) Both Assertion and Reason are correct and the Reason is a correct explanation of
the Assertion.
(b) Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not a correct explanation of
the Assertion.
(c)Assertion is correct, Reason isincorrect
(d) Both Assertion and Reason are correct.
3. Assertion: The electrostatic force between the plates of a charged isolated capacitor
decreases when dielectric fills whole space between plates.
Reason : The electric field between the plates of a charged isolated capacitance
increases when dielectric fills whole space between plates.
4. Assertion : Two equipotential surfaces cannot cut each other.
Reason : Two equipotential surfaces are parallel to each other.

SECTION B (2 Marks)

5. A regular hexagon of side 10 cm has a charge 5 μC at each of its vertices. Calculate

the potential at the centre of the hexagon.
6. What is the area of the plates of a 2 Farad parallel plate air capacitor, given that the
separation between the plates is 0.5 cm?
1
7. At a point due to a point charge, the values of electric field and potential are 32 N/C:
and 16 J/C respectively. Calculate magnitude of charge and distance of the charge
from the point of observation.

SECTION C (3 Marks)
8. A charge of 8 mC is located at the origin. Calculate the work done in taking a small
charge of – 2 × 10-9 C from a point P (0, 0, 3 cm) to a point Q (0, 4 cm, 0), via a
point R (0, 6 cm, 9 cm).
9. Three point charges +q,+2q and Q are placed at the three vertices of an equilateral
triangle . Find the value of charge Q (in term of q ), so that electric potential energy
of the system is zero.

SECTION D (5 Marks)
10. (a) Calculate the capacitance of the arrangement of two parallel plates of area
separated by a distance of d between them. K1 ,K2, and K3 are the dielectric
constants of the three materials in between the plates as in the figure.

(b) A network of four capacitors each of 15 µF capacitance is connected to a 500 V

supply as shown in the figure. Determine (a) equivalent capacitance of the network and
(b) charge on each capacitor.

SECTION E (4 Marks)
11. When an insulator is placed in an external field, the dipoles become aligned. Induced
surface charges on the insulator establish a polarization field Ēi in its interior. The net field
Ē in the insulator is the vector sum of Ē, and Ēi as shown in the figure.
2
On the application of external electric field, the effect of aligning the electric dipoles in the
insulator is called polarisation and the field Ē; is known as the polarisation field. The dipole
moment per unit volume of the dielectric is known as polarisation (P).For linear isotropic
dielectrics, P =χE, where χ = electrical susceptibility of the dielectric medium.

(i) Which among the following is an example of polar molecule?

(2) O₂
(b) H
(c) N2
(d) HCI
(ii) When air is replaced by a dielectric medium of constant K, the maximum force of
attraction between two charges separated by a distance
(a) increases K times
(b) remains unchanged
(c) decreases K times
(d) increases 2K times.
(iii) Which of the following is a dielectric?
(a) Copper
(b) Glass
(c) Antimony (Sb)
(d) None of these
(iv) For a polar molecule, which of the following statements is true ?
(a) The centre of gravity of electrons and protons coincide.
(b) The centre of gravity of electrons and protons do not coincide.
(c) The charge distribution is always symmetrical.
(d) The dipole moment is always zero.
