1. What is Mycoplasma and what are its characteristics?

Mycoplasmas are considered as the smallest and simplest self-replicating bacteria.

They are very simple one-celled organisms without outer membranes and they
penetrate and infect individual cells. Its characteristics, is that they lack cell wall and the
plasma membrane forms the outer boundary of the cell and due to the absence of cell
wall these organisms can change their shape and are pleomorphic meaning they Lack
nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. These organisms are resistant to
almost all the antibiotics as it works on the cell wall, and They contain fibrillar DNA as
genetic material..

2. What are Plant Mycoplasma?

Plant mycoplasma or Plant pathogenic mycoplasmas are responsible for several

hundred diseases and they belong to two groups: the phytoplasmas and the
spiroplasmas. The phytoplasmas (previously called MLOs, for mycoplasma like
organisms) were discovered first; they are pleiomorphic, and have so far resisted in vitro
cultivation.

3. What are the different kinds of mycoplasma and how are they different from each other?

Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Mycoplasma hominis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and

Ureaplasma species
1.)Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria commonly cause mild infections of the
respiratory system (the parts of the body involved in breathing). The most common
illness caused by these bacteria, especially in children, is tracheobronchitis, they
spread from person to person from respiratory droplets, such as when someone
coughs or sneezes or Someone can also touch something that has the bacteria on it,
such as a door handle, and then touch their eye, nose or mouth and be infected.
2.)Mycoplasma hominis is a common mollicute bacteria that is present in almost all
humans in the urinary tract. but it can also sometimes cause infection which can be
transmitted sexually, it is transferred from one person to another by having sex with an
infected person and can also be spread from an infected pregnant mother to the baby
during delivery.
3.)Mycoplasma genitalium is a type of bacteria that can cause an STD. You get it by
having sex with someone who has it
4.)Ureaplasma is a bacteria that is commonly found in people's urinary or genital
tract. It is parasitic, which means it needs a host, such as a human or animal, to
survive.

4. Differentiate the Mycoplasma from Viruses

The main difference between this two mycoplasma and virus is that the virus is
considered as a non-living particle, which means it requires a host for its replication.
Whereas mycoplasma is a true bacterium, which means that they lacks a cell wall
and, has an irregular shape. A virus is an obligate parasite while mycoplasma is
mostly a free-living organism.
The virus refers to an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule
in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply
only within the living cells of a host while mycoplasma refers to any group of small
typically parasitic bacteria that do not have cell walls and sometimes cause diseases.
By shape, A virus has a rigid shape while mycoplasma has polymorphic or
pleomorphic shape.
By size A virus can be 20-400 nm in size while mycoplasma is 0.1-1 μm in size.
The virus may have either DNA or RNA while mycoplasma has both DNA and RNA.
By protein synthesis, Virus proteins are synthesized by the host’s cellular
mechanisms while mycoplasma synthesizes its own proteins.
