CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Introduction to SIWES

Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)is a program that is designed to expose
and prepare students of universities, polytechnics, colleges of Technology, Colleges of
Agriculture and Education for industrial Work situation which they are likely to meet after
graduation. It is a skill training program which affords students the opportunity of familiarizing,
acquiring and exposing themselves with the needed experience in handling industrial equipment
and machinery that are not usually available in their institutions. It is accepted training program,
which is part of the approved Minimum Academic Standard in the various degree programs for
all Nigerian Universities. The scheme is aimed at bridging the existing gap between theory and
practice of Sciences, Agriculture, Medical Sciences (including Nursing), Engineering and
Technology, Management, Information and Communication Technology, and other professional
educational programs in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. It is aimed at exposing students to
machines and equipment, professional work methods, and ways of safeguarding the work areas
and workers in industries, offices, laboratories, hospitals, and other organizations.

1.2 Background of SIWES

SIWES was founded in 1973 by ITF (Industrial Training Funds) to address the problem of
tertiary institution graduates' lack of appropriate skills for employment in Nigeria. The program
allows students to become acquainted with and exposed to the experience required in handling
and operating different equipment and machinery that are not available at their schools or
institutions.

Prior to the establishment of this scheme, there was a rising concern and trend among
industrialists that graduates from higher institutions lacked pertinent practical experience for
employment. As a result, employers believed that theoretical education in higher education was
unreactive to the needs of labor employers. Thousands of Nigerians faced this difficulty till 1973.
The fund's main motivation for establishing and designing the scheme in 1973/74 was launched
against this context.

The ITF (Industrial Training Fund) organization decided to assist all interested Nigerian students
and created the SIWES program. The federal government formally approved and presented it in
1974. During its early years, the scheme was completely supported by the (industrial training
fund) ITF, but as the financial commitment became too much for the fund, it withdrew in 1978.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education
(NBTE) were given control of the scheme by the federal government in 1979. The federal
government handed over supervision and implementation of the scheme to ITF in November
1984. It was taken over by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in July 1985, with the federal
government bearing entire responsibility for funding.
1.3 Aims and Objectives of SIWES

1. To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machineries
that they may not be available in the universities.

2. To provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real work
situations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

3. It provides an avenue for students in institutions of higher learning to acquire industrial skill
and experience during their course of study.

4. To allow transition phase from school to the world of working environment easier and
facilitate students' contact for later job placement

5. Prepare students for a business career by combining analytical ability with self-reliance.

CHAPTER THREE

3.1 Aims and Objectives for Being in the Organisation

My main aim for choosing the organization was to make sure that I was able to achieve the
purpose of the SIWES program

1. To successfully complete my SIWES program.

2. To be able to see what it is like in the working world

3. To learn more about the practical aspect of graphics

3.2 Training Procedure

I was given full orientation and asked to pick a course after which I was placed in the beginner
class to make my foundation firm. At first, I had classes everyday for a week for almost a month
and a half during which I was in the beginner class. After leaving the beginners class, I started
having physical classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Mondays and Thursdays were either
for assignment or project submissions or free days. Saturdays were left aside for practical classes
which was about testing us on what we did that week. Revisions were also done at some points
during the program. At the end of the program, the completion letter was given after we passed
tests which were based on what we had learnt during the course of our SIWES program.

3.3 Pictorial Description of Training Instruments and Equipment

3.4 Assessment of Industry Meeting to the Objectives of SIWES.

The industry assessment met the objective of SIWES in every aspect completed. The training
quality was good as I was able to develop myself through that and everything was practical. I
was exposed to different methods and techniques which provided me an opportunity to expand
my knowledge in real world situations. My course tutor and supervisor did their able best to
make sure that no stone was left unturned in the course of my SIWES
CHAPTER FOUR

4.1 Experience Gained/Description of Work done during SIWES

During my four months industrial attachment at Ugrace Technologies, I acquired lot of

knowledge which are similar to the day to day practical and theories I had acquired during our

WEEK 16

I designed a flier using greyscale, a JOIN US flier for our organisation and a promo flier for a
burger restaurant. I duplicated a birthday flier, our organization logo, sticker.

Graphics design is an art of combining design elements (elements we cannot do without) and
design principles through design layout and concept using visual display

How to install Corel draw

1. Go to file manager on the system

2. Click on local file

3. Click on program file

4. Click on Corel

5. Click on setup

6. Click on setup icon

It can also be installed using a CD drive

Some tools in Corel draw include:

1. Pick tool
2. Shape tool

3. Free-hand tool

4. Rectangle tool

5. Ellipse tool

6. Eye dropper tool

7. Polygon tool etc.

Fix text to path: This is a tool in Corel draw that allows you to wound up a text round a certain
shape thereby giving it the shape of that object

Minimal design: This is a design that has a lot of negative space i.e., it doesn't have much
element

Envelope tool: This is a tool that allows you to dent the required of a text without affecting the
other parts.

Quick tracing: This is an effect done by the quick trace option. It traces out the selected image
and gives a close replica of the selected image that can be edited

Three Cs of Graphics

The three Cs of graphics include

1. Composition

2. Component

3. Concept

UIUX: UI stands for User Interface while UX stands for User Experience

Greyscale design: This is a design that's made to be in a black and white scale i.e everything in
the design is either a shade of white or black.

4.2 Challenges/Problems encountered during SIWES

1. Insufficient funds for transportation

4.3 Prospects for SIWES Program

The SIWES offers students a promising avenue to bridge the gap between academic learning and
practical experience. This program mandated by the National Gorvement for tertiary institutions,
provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their field of study through
placement in relevant industries, organisations or research institutes

Participating in SIWES opens up a multitude of prospects for students. First of all, it allows them
to apply theoretical knowledge to real world situations, thereby deepening their understanding
and proficiency in their chosen field

Also, SIWES exposes students to the dynamics of the professional world, including workplace
etiquette, teamwork, problem solving skills and project management.

Additionally, it provides excellent platform for networking. Students have the opportunity to
interact with professionals in their field, establish contacts and build relationships that may be
beneficial in future career.

Another one is that it enhances students’ employability prospects. Employers often value
practical experience and hands-on skills when recruiting graduates. By completing SIWES
placement, students demonstrate to prospective employers that they are ready for the workforce
and their ability to contribute meaningfully from day one

In conclusion, the prospects for students participating in the SIWES program is highly
promising. It offers an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience, develop essential
skills, build professional networks and enhance employability chances ultimately preparing
students for successful careers in their chosen field.
CHAPTER FIVE

5.1 Conclusion

My four months industrial attachment with Ugrace Technologies has been one of the most
interesting, productive and instructive experience in my life. Throughout this training,I have
gained new insight.I benefited a lot in the field attachment in a way that I managed to apply the
theoretical knowledge from my university into practice through many activities/assignments the
intern was instructed to do. The intern activities improved the skills like typing, designing, social
interactions, customer relationship, cooperation, team work and many more. I learnt many
lessons, got different ideas from the different people (employees) at the Organization and also
through interacting with other interns from my school and other schools and this contributed a lot
on my knowledge and experience.

Finally, internship was fun and therefore I would encourage Ugrace Technologies to continue
giving students this opportunity to do their academic requirement of internship from their
organization.

5.2 Recommendation to improve SIWES Program

According to my observations during the SIWES program, I’d like to recommend my own
humble opinions which are the following

1. The SIWES body of the school should collate a list of possible places for students to do their
SIWES program based on the opinion of past students

2. The ITF supervisors should try to come for supervision as they have said

3. The promised sum of money should be given to students monthly to help in aiding their
transportation and feeding and to prevent them from thinking it is a sham.

5.3 Recommendations for Upcoming SIWES Students

1. Upcoming students should ask the past students for their opinion on where they feel would be
the best place to do their SIWES program
2. The upcoming students should make sure to attend their Organisation’s orientation as lot of
important information would be gotten from it

3. They should be submissive and ready to learn and not mind the stress
