1. day =18.932−9.112 ( eth ) +3.104 ( sex ) +2.154 (lrn)

2. The slope for eth[N] is -9.1122, which means that Aboriginal students are expected to be

absent for 9.1122 fewer days than non-Aboriginal students, holding all other factors

constant. This slope is statistically significant at the 5% level because the p-value of

0.001 is less than 0.05.

The slope for sex[M] is 3.1043, which means that male students are expected to be absent

for 3.1043 more days than female students, holding all other factors constant. This slope

is not statistically significant at the 5% level because the p-value of 0.241 is greater than

0.05.

The slope for lrn[SL] is 2.1542, which means that slow learners are expected to be absent

for 2.1542 more days than average learners, holding all other factors constant. This slope

is not statistically significant at the 5% level because the p-value of 0.418 is greater than

0.05.
3. The residual for the second observation in the dataset is calculated by subtracting the

predicted value from the actual value.

The predicted value is calculated by plugging the values for eth, sex, and lrn for the

second observation into the regression equation as follows.

day 2 predicted =18.932−9.112 ( eth2 ) +3.104 ( sex 2) + 2.154(lrn2 )

day 2 predicted =18.932−9.112 ( 0 )+ 3.104 ( 1 ) +2.154 (1)

day 2 predicted =18.932−0+3.104 +2.154

day 2 predicted =24.19

day 2 predicted ≈ 24 days

Residual=Actual−Predicted

Where:

Actual = 11 days

Predicted = 24 days approximately

Residual=11−24

Residual=−13

Therefore, the residual for the second observation is -13 days.

4. The adjusted R-squared value is 0.07. This value of 0.07 indicates that only 7% of the

variation in the 'days' column can be explained by the linear model using the 'eth', 'sex',

'age', and 'lrn' columns. In this context, an adjusted R-squared of 0.07 suggests a weak
explanatory power of the model, implying that the independent variables explain only a

small portion of the variability in the dependent variable. This suggests that the model is

not a good fit for the data.
