Note. Damaged level '1' coded as class 1.

a) The coefficient for the Temperature feature in the logistic regression model is

approximately -0.367 and the intercept is approximately 23.775.

Therefore, the equation for the logistic regression model based on the JASP output is:

logit (P)=β 0+ β1 ¿

By substituting from the table:

logit (P)=23.775−0.367(t emperature)

This equation represents how the probability of damage to the O-ring changes with

temperature according to the logistic regression model.

b)

i) The β estimate associated with Temperature is statistically significant at a 5%

significance level. This means that the temperature has a significant impact on the

probability of damage to the O-ring according to the logistic regression model.

The β estimate associated with Temperature is -0.367 with a p-value of 0.036.

Since the p-value is less than the significance level of 0.05, it is statistically

significant, indicating that temperature is a meaningful predictor of O-ring

damage.
ii) The statistically significant coefficient for Temperature in the logistic regression

model indicates that for every unit increase in temperature, there is a

corresponding change in the log-odds of the O-ring being damaged. In this case,

with a coefficient of approximately -0.367, it suggests that as the temperature

increases, the log-odds of damage decrease. This interpretation implies that higher

temperatures are associated with a lower probability of damage to the O-ring.

c)

i) Based on the output of the logistic model, it is justified to conclude that a part of

the O-rings was damaged due to temperature. The statistically significant

coefficient for Temperature in the logistic regression model indicates that

temperature has a significant impact on the probability of damage to the O-ring.

ii) The negative coefficient suggests that higher temperatures are associated with a

lower probability of damage, supporting the hypothesis that temperature plays a

role in the damage to the O-rings.

d) The model-estimated probabilities of an O-ring being damaged at the given temperatures

are calculated using the logistic function:

1
Probability of Damage P ( Damage )= − ( 23.775−0.367 ( temperature ) )
1+e

1
Probability of Damage P ( 51 )= − (23.775−0.367 ( 51 ) )
≈ 0.994
1+ e

1
Probability of Damage P ( 53 )= − (23.775−0.367 ( 53 ) )
≈ 0.987
1+ e

1
Probability of Damage P ( 55 )= − (23.775−0.367 ( 55 ) )
≈ 0.973
1+ e

1
Probability of Damage P ( 57 )= − (23.775−0.367 ( 57 ) )
≈ 0.946
1+e
