titanium dioxide industry.
CHAPTER-2
INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
9
The company's primary manufacturing facility includes titanium dioxide pigment plants,
which utilize titanium-bearing ores such as ilmenite and rutile as raw materials. These ores
are processed through various chemical and physical processes to produce TiO2 pigment of
different grades and specifications, tailored to meet the specific requirements of different end-
user industries. TTP's TiO2 pigment is known for its high opacity, brightness, and UV
resistance, making it ideal for applications requiring whiteness and durability, such as exterior
coatings, automotive finishes, and packaging materials.
Besides TiO2 pigment production, TTP is also involved in the manufacture of other titanium-
based products, such as titanium dioxide feedstock, titanium sponge, and titanium metal
powders, catering to diverse industrial sectors. As a government-owned enterprise, TTP plays
a significant role in promoting industrial development and contributing to the economy of
Kerala and India as a whole. It adheres to strict quality standards and environmental
regulations, ensuring sustainable and responsible manufacturing practices. Overall, TTP's
contribution to the chemical industry lies in its production of high-quality titanium dioxide
pigment and other titanium-based products, supporting various sectors with essential
materials for their manufacturing processes.
Travancore Titanium Products is one of the largest industries in India that produces Titanium
dioxide. In addition of T102, the company is manufacturing Potassium titanate, Sodium
titanate, low phosphorous and special grade TiO2 in low quantity. Travancore Titanium
Products Limited produces two types of Titanium Dioxide - Anatase and Rutile (FTPRD-01),
the titanium dioxide is marked under the trade name of ANJATOX and is available in four
grades - ISI, RG, GP and GR
10
The major raw material used for the production of TiO2 is ilmenite. Ilmenite is a compound
of the oxides of Iron, Titanium and traces of other elements. The separation of TiO2 can be
done through sulphate route or chloride route. Travancore Titanium Products plant is based
on Sulphate Route. Titanium dioxide is a brilliantly white non-toxic pigment. The unique
properties of titanium dioxide which make it supreme amongst the white pigments are its
excellent opacity, extreme whiteness and chemical stability, which lead to considerable
economy is usage, when compared to other white pigments. Titanium Dioxide is mainly used
in the paint industries i.e. about 55%, 14% of TiO2 is used for the manufacture of rubber
goods and rest is used for the manufacture of printing ink, textiles, paper, cosmetics etc.
Travancore Titanium Products Limited is one of the largest industries in India that produces
Titanium dioxide The company also Produces potassium Titanate, Sodium titanate, low
phosphorus and special grade TiO2 comparatively in low quantities. Titanium Dioxide is a
white pigment and there are two grades of Titanium Dioxide
Rutile Grade
Anatase grade
These two grades of Titanium Dioxide are chemically same but their physical properties
differ from each other. The company deals with the production of Titanium Dioxide, which
belongs to Anatase grade. The major raw materials used for productions is ilmenite The most
important commercial use of ilmenite is for the manufacture of Titanium and traces of
another element. The separation of Titanium Dioxide can be done through the sulphate route
or chloride route. The Travancore Titanium product plant is based on the Sulphate Route
11
Titanium Dioxide is non-toxic nature having chemical stability. It possesses higher refractive
index and hence it is used to make paints It is extremely heat resistant and this enhances the
capacity of the substance incorporated with Titanium Dioxide to withstand the effect of the
chemical environment and climatic conditions. It has got high pacifying power, the power to
change transparency. Uniformity of composition enable it to mix with any material without
losing ns mature properties. Hardness of the materials provides good resistant to mechanical
shock.
The chemical industry, including titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment production, faces several
challenges, which can impact companies like Travancore Titanium Product Limited (TTP).
Volatility in Raw Material Prices: The prices of raw materials like titanium-bearing
ores (e.g., ilmenite, rutile) can be volatile due to factors such as supply-demand
dynamics, geopolitical tensions, and currency fluctuations. Fluctuations in raw
material prices can affect production costs and profit margins for TiO2 pigment
manufacturers.
12
Navigating these challenges requires TiO2 pigment manufacturers like TTP to adopt a
strategic approach, including diversifying their product portfolio, optimizing operational
efficiency, investing in sustainability initiatives, and maintaining flexibility to adapt to
changing market conditions. Additionally, collaboration with industry stakeholders,
government agencies, and
research institutions can help address common challenges and drive collective progress
within the chemical industry.

COMPANY PROFILE
14
Travancore Titanium Products Limited (TTPL) was incorporated on 18th December, 1946 in
collaboration with British Titan Products Limited, UK, for the manufacture of anatase grade
titanium dioxide pigment through "Sulphate route'. The installed capacity of the plant was
1800 tons per annum. Through commercial operations started in 1950, the full swing
production could be maintained from 1-1-1954 consequent on the Central Government
granting tariff protection and also after availing a loan of Rs. 15 lakhs from IFCI. The
management of the company was vested with a Managing Agency, viz Indian Titan Products
Company Pvt. Limited as per a Managing Agency Agreement dated 3-3-1947 on a
remuneration of 10% of net profits. This arrangement continued till 15-08-1960 when the
management was taken over by the State Government. The company stated its first expansion
program in 1957 for doubling the annual production capacity from 1800 to 3600 tones (5 to
10 tons per day-1800 tons rutile and 1800 tons anatase)
A Research and Development wing was set up in the company on 1961 Industrial License for
50 tons per day expansion was obtained in July 1961. It was proposed to produce rutile grade
and anatase grade side by side. Next expansion from 10 to 8 tons per day was completed in
October 1963.However the rutile production was temporarily discontinued in
1963.Government approved the expansion program for producing 50 tons per day in 1967.
The sole selling agency agreement with TTK & Co. which has been in existence since 1954
was terminated on 30-06-1970 from which date TTP took over the sales directly. The
Resource mobilization policy committee set up in 1974 by the state planning board
recommended for fixation of a sole selling agency for the sale of products of Government
companies. Accordingly, the Kerala State Industrial Products Trading Corporation (KSIPTC)
was focus in the year 1976 Now both Domestic and export sales are Directly done by the
company.
Travancore Titanium products Ltd. was incorporated on 18th of December 1946, to produce
pigment grade Titanium dioxide from limonite which is abundantly available as placer
deposits on beaches near Kollam, 65 Kms north of the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram in
15
the coastal state of Kerala, India. The unit was promoted by the then princely state of
Travancore in collaboration with the British Titan Products (BTP) Company Limited, UK.
The administrative control of the company was with a managing agency, Indian Titan
Products Company. The company which started production at a modest rate of 5 tons per day
increased its capacity in stages to the present level of 40-45 tons per day. Till recently,
Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. Was the only unit producing Anatase grade Titanium
Dioxide pigment, in India. Travancore Titanium Products became a State Public sector unit in
1960, with the Government of Kerala owning 80.94% of the share.
Production of titanium dioxide commenced in the year 1951, and the capacity was raised to
10 tons per day in 1960, the year in which the management of the company was taken over
by the Govt. of Kerala. The company also installed its own sulfuric acid plant to produce acid
for captive consumption. In 1963 the capacity of Titanium Dioxide produced was further
increased to 18 tons per day with a commensurate addition to the sulfuric acid production
also
Subsequently, a major expansion program was undertaken and completed in 1973, increasing
the realizable capacity to 45 tons per day of anatase grade TiO2. To meet the increased
requirement of sulfuric acid, a third acid plant of 300 tons per day capacity was also put on
stream. A modern sulfuric acid plant was commissioned in 1996, which utilizes the tail gas
recycling DCDA (Double Catalysis Double Absorption) technology. The alkali scrubbing
system incorporated there in helps to keep sulfur dioxide emissions well within permissible
limits and helps in maintaining a clean environment.
Titanium Dioxide finds use in a variety of industrial products such as paints, foot wears, toilet
soaps, ceramic products, artificial fibers, pharmaceutical preparations, rubber products,
plastics, paper printing inks textile printing formulations, flooring materials cosmetics,
welding rods etc. Its extreme whiteness, perfect non toxicity and chemical inertness make it
an ideal choice as a white pigment. The chemical is available in two crystalline forms, viz
anatase and rutile, which are of much commercial significance. The relatively softer anatase
is the right material for delustering artificial fibers. In TTP Ltd, the anatase grade is produced
by the conventional sulphate technology.
