Maths discussion
When the tank is measured, it is found that the edge is 10
cm. So the volume of the tank is 10 x 10 x 10 = 1 000 cm3

1 ml = 1 cm
When do you use litre or millilitres or cubic
centimeters? Estimate the capacity of
water-bottles of classmates and compare it
with 1 litre jug

Word Problems
a) Find the capacity of the tank in cubic centimetres.
b) Find the volume of water in the tank in litres and millilitres.
8 cm
7 cm 15 cm
26 cm
a) Capacity of tank = 26 × 15 × 8
= 3120 cm3
The capacity of the tank is 3120 cm3.
Solve word problems
The edge of a cubical tank is 11 cm long. It contains 900 ml of water. How
much more water is needed to fill the tank completely? Give your answer in
litres.
Capacity of tank = 11 × 11 × 11
= 1331 cm3
= 1331 ml
= 1.331 L
Volume of water in tank = 900 ml
= 0.9 L
Amount of water needed to fill tank = 1.331 – 0.9
11 cm
= 0.431 L
0.431L of water is needed to fill the tank completely
Let’s try!
A rectangular tank which measures 40 cm by 33 cm by 15 cm is -filled with
water. The water is poured into a cubical tank of edge 20 cm until it is full.
How much water is left in the rectangular tank? Give your answers in
millilitres.
