PART IV: READING

A. Read the article about stress. Then choose the correct answer for each question.
Is stress good or bad for you?
(1) These days, many people feel stressed. There are many different reasons for stress in
modern life. For example, people may get stressed at work. Perhaps they are working long
hours in the office. Maybe they worry that their work is not good enough. They may think
they need to work harder to make their boss happy. Of course, most of us believe stress is a
bad thing. But can stress actually be good for you?
(2) First, what is stress? We feel stressed when we are afraid of something. Our hearts go
faster when we are stressed. This helps us if we want to run away or if we have to do
something quickly to stop the danger. This is how the body changes in stressful situations.
Some psychologists say that having no stress in your life is a bad thing. We need to learn to
solve life’s difficulties. A stress-free life does not teach us to find solutions.
(3) What are the other benefits of stress? In 2013, some researchers investigated stress in
animals. They discovered that an event that is a little stressful is useful. It makes more cells*
in the animals’ brains. This improves short-term memory. Stress keeps animals focused on
problems in the area around them. So stress helps to keep animals safe from danger. If stress
is not extremely high, it can actually help you focus.
(4) Some stress by itself is not bad for health. A little stress can help people avoid
diseases. It can improve how your heart works. The body makes cells to fight against getting
sick. A research in 2012 showed that a stressful event results in more of these cells. So
situations with a bit of stress can improve your health.
(5) Students often feel stressed during an exam. But stress for a short time before an
important event can be useful. It can make you give all your attention to your work. It can
help you prepare well. Stress is good for cognitive tasks because it can improve your memory.
Attitudes to stress are important, too. A positive attitude is likely to reduce bad results that
might be caused by stress.
(6) So when is stress really bad for you? The answer is when you feel very stressed. For
example, if you can’t control a difficult situation, the stress is likely to be harmful. A lot of
stress can be bad for your body and can make you ill. Some people cannot forget very
stressful events. If they can’t forget bad memories, they may become sick. But next time you
feel stressed, remember there is good stress as well as bad stress.

Reading and Students
Did you know that some people don't do their reading assignments? It's shocking, but
it's true. Some students don't even read short texts that they are assigned in class. There are
many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus.
They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today.
Reading is very necessary and essential in some ways because it develops your mind.
It is like a workout for your brain. When people get old, their muscles begin to deteriorate.
They get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same
thing happens to people's brains when they get older. Brain power and speed decline with age.
Reading strengthens your brain and prevents these declines.
Furthermore, you can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides
knowledge. Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person.
You can learn to do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games? Do you want
to design clothing? Reading can teach you all these and more.
To improve yourself more, you have to be good at reading, and the only way to do it
is to practice. Read everything that you can at school even if you don’t find it interesting.
Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a "boring" text can teach you new words. Having a
larger vocabulary will help you express yourself better. You will be able to speak, write, and
think more intelligently. What's boring about that? Do not think a text is useless because it is
unfamiliar to you. Each time you read, you learn about new ideas and perspectives.
Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a wider
perspective on things. You can learn how people live in faraway places. You can learn about
cultures different from your own.

7
Reading is good for your state of mind. It has a calming effect. It can lower your
stress levels and help you relax. You can escape from your troubles for a moment when you
read, and it's a positive escape. The benefits of reading far outweigh those of acting like a
doofus*.
So, do yourself a favour: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as
you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it contains. Then move on to the
next one.

*doofus: a stupid person
