USING THE TRANSISTOR AS A SWITCH

TITLE

EXPERIMENT NO. 6

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

College of Engineering
Central Mindanao University
Musuan, Bukidnon

2nd Semester, SY 2023-24

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the exercises, the student must be able to:
1. Use the transistors as a switch.
2. Measure and evaluate the voltage and current characteristic of transistors operated as
a switch.

MATERIALS:
Power supply
Plug-in-module
Transistors: 2N3055 (1)
Voltmeter
Connecting Wires
LED: jumbo
Resistors:
22 KΩ
3.9 KΩ
500 KΩ pot
470 Ω
Signal Generator
Oscilloscope

PROCEDURES:

1. Connect the circuit shown in Figure 1. Make sure that switch, S 1, is in position #1
before turning ON the power supply.

Figure 1.

A transistor switch circuit

2. Turn ON the power supply. Turn the shaft of potential, RB1, until the LED turns ON.
3. Measure VBE, IB, VCE and IC and record their respective values on their proper location
on Table 1.
 Is the resistors ON (saturated) or OFF (cut-off)? _____.
 Why do you say so? ______________________________________________.
4. Turn the shaft of potentiometer, RB1 until the LED turns OFF.
5. Measure VBE, IB, VCE and IC and record their respective values on their proper location
on Table 1.
 Is the transistors ON (saturated) or OFF (cut-off)? _____.
 Why do you say so? ______________________________________________.
6. Move switch, S1 to position #2.
 Is the transistors ON (saturated) or OFF (cut-off)? _____.
 Why do you say so?___________________________________________.
7. Measure VBE, IB, VCE and IC and record their respective values on their proper location
on Table 1.
8. Condition the data of Table 1 by indicating whether the transistor is ON or OFF under
the conditions specified.

9. Move the switch to position 1 and turn the potentiometer shaft until the LED turns
OFF. Disconnect RB3 from the circuit on Figure 1.
10. Set the signal generator to 3 Vrms (using the DMM) at 1 KHz frequency. Apply this
signal to the base-emitter terminals of the circuit as shown in Figure 2.

11. Connect the oscilloscope channel 1 probe across the collector and emitter terminal of
the transistors (emitter serves as the ground terminal). Draw the output waveform as
seen on the scope on the graph provided below (indicate on the graph when LED is on
and when LED is OFF).

 What is the frequency of the waveform? ______.

 Can we now conclude that a transistor can be used for high-speed switching
applications? _____.

12. Change the frequency of the signal generator to 0.1 Hz.

 What have you observed on the LED’s light? ___________________________.
 Describe the readings of IB, IC and VCE when the LED is ON and when it is OFF.

_______________________________________________________________
13. Connect the oscilloscope channel 1 probe across the collector and emitter terminal of
the transistors (emitter serves as the ground terminal). Draw the output waveform as
seen on the scope on the graph provided below (indicate on the graph when LED is on
and when LED is OFF).

 What does the waveform(s) mean in relation to the BJT operation as a switch?
_______________________________________________________________
14. Change the frequency of the signal generator to 10 Hz.
 What have you observed on the LED’s light? ___________________________.
15. Change the frequency of the signal generator to 100 Hz.
 What have you observed on the LED’s light? ___________________________.
 What does this mean?_____________________________________________
16. Disconnect the circuit. Clean your work area and arrange the materials in their
respective places.

EVALUATION

1. Redraw the circuit of Figure 1 if the transistors under test is a PNP type.

2. If VCC = 10 V and RC = 2 KΩ, what will be the value of the collector current if the
transistor is (a) ON __________ (b) OFF _________
3. If VCC = 10 V and βDC = 100 what will be the value of the base collector current of the
transistor is ON? ____________________________.
4. If RB2 in problem #3 was changed to 200 MΩ,what will be the value of the base and
collector current?____________________. Is the transistor ON or OFF? _____________
5. If VCC = 10 V and βDC = 100 and RC = 1 KΩ, what will be the value of the base and
collector current if the transistor is ON? _________________________.
