Method Statement and Risk Assessment for Installation of Drainage water piping

1. Scope

Describe in detail the procedure to be adopted in executing ducting and to ensure


compliance with the approved material specifications. Inform all concerned supervisors
including workers the value and importance of this activity prior to implementation.
This activity should be performed with strict compliance and implementation of Safety
Requirements & Procedure and project specifications.

4. Roles and responsibilities

 Project manager (PM)

The PM will have the overall responsibility of the project for execution,
Quality, Health safety and Environment. He shall maintain the planning progress and
co-ordination of works.

 Site engineer (SE)

- To ensure that the works are carried out according to the Contract
Specifications and approved method statement.
- To provide all necessary information and distribute responsibilities to his
construction team.
- To monitor the progress of work in relation with the work program and to
report to the construction manager.
- To co-ordinate with the safety officer and to ensure that the works are
carried out in safe practicing methods.
- To ensure that the foreman is fully aware of the work sequences and related
testing frequencies before proceeding with the installation.
- To ensure compliance of the works with the related approved quality
procedures
- Report to PM in daily basis on site progress.

 Supervisor/Chargehand

Supervisor/Charge hand will be directly responsible for the day-to-day job at site,
for coordinating of work with skilled and unskilled labour or any other staff assigned
in his area

 Safety Inspector

- To ensure sound implementation of all safety procedures and measures


related to the nature of works being carried out, in accordance with the
HSE Plan and general safety rules.
- To ensure that all persons involved in the work are aware of their
responsibilities, and having enough understanding of the related safety
procedures.

- To report to the Project Manager and to coordinate with Construction


Manager in order to ensure that all the implemented and adopted safety
measures are effective enough to maintain safe working atmosphere in the
site.
- To ensure that all safety statistics are recorded and reported to the project
manager.
- To maintain continuous inspections of the site activities, advise and train
the involved persons on daily basis to prevent accidents, personnel injury
and property damage.
- To give special concern to housekeeping, and ensure that the site is
maintained clean and tidy.

6. Material handling & storage at site


 Handling
- All Ducts and ancillaries shall be carefully off-loaded at site using
necessary manpower / shifting or lifting machinery / equipment to ensure
that no damage is caused to the materials.
- All materials shall be stored in a clean dry place and adequate cover shall
be provided to avoid damages.

- Wherever possible the loading and unloading of ducts should be carried


out by hand and for bulk quantity that are packed in crates fork lift or any
lifting equipment shall be used.
- Materials shall be shifted to workplace from storage area with the help of
sufficient manpower or required equipment.

7. Plant and Equipment


Following indicative hand tools list shall be used for the installation works.

8. Method of installation
A – Pre-installation works
 All materials drawings and other documentation relevant to a particular section of
works will be checked by the construction department prior to the commencement of
work ensuring that these are of the correct type.

 Before commencing any construction works, pre-inspections will be carried out on


all materials.
 Execution of the scope of works shall be done only after the areas and accesses are
inspected to confirm that it is suitable for construction works to commence.
 A close coordination with other trades will carried out on site prior to commence
work.
 A safe and protective storage area shall be allocated on site.

B - Installation works
 Supervisor will instruct tradesmen regarding the execution of the works and will
distribute all necessary approved approved drawings of the latest revision.
 The supervisor will also check that materials, tools and equipment available are in
compliance with the contract requirements.
 Ensure horizontal ductworks are adequately supported at equal distances in
accordance with approved approved drawings with all brackets fixed to the vertical
face of the ribbed beams of the structure.
 Care will be taken during setting out, that ductwork runs between ceiling lines so as
to maintain maximum flexibility for any future relocation of lighting fixtures or
other services.
 Ductwork supports unless otherwise indicated will be installed to provide a
minimum space of 15mm between finished covering and adjacent work, and 100mm
clearance from suspended ceiling.
 Supports or hangers will be placed within 300mm of any 45˚-90˚ bend.
 Screwed drop rods will have thread adjustment in either direction available after
leveling of ductwork and associated plenum boxes.
 Ductwork passing through non-fire rated walls and floors will be adequately
supported on either side.

 Supervisor to ensure that there are no dents, distortion or buckling of ducting during
installation being aware that damaged material will be rejected.
 Supports are to be fixed at correct levels checking the bracket material is compatible
with the installation.
 Fixing of flanges to ductwork will be by the approved details and in compliance with
the specification requirements; clean both flange faces to be joined; Ad gasket
jointing material to flanges to mated; Using only undamaged rust free bolts, nuts and
washers when joining/mating flanges together and tighten bolts; Clean any excess
jointing material from flanges.
 Continuously check horizontal and vertical alignment of ductwork and compliance
with the approved approved drawings and specification requirements by using spirit
level plumb or other suitable instrument.
 In line equipment is to be independently supported from main structure and not from
blockwork walls or substructure.
 Silencers, fire dampers, balancing dampers and other plant items will be installed as
per approved approved drawings and will be supported adequately.
 Supervisor to check and ensure daily accomplishments that the correct type of
supports is installed and supports are adequately supporting the ductwork and
associated plant equipment.
 Test holes to be provided and plugged ready for testing and commissioning.
 Ensure terminal equipment is installed as specified.
 Supervisor to ensure that all completed installations is neat and tidy, and that there is
adequate spacing between ductwork and in line equipment allowing access for
operation and maintenance as per approved approved drawings and manufacturer's
recommendation.
 The supervisor in charge and the QA/QC Officer shall continuously monitor the
activities by recording the defects or snags to ensure that all components indicated
on the approved approved drawings have been installed and that the installation is in
accordance with the contract requirements.

9. Man Power Requirement

Manpower requirement like Project Engineer, Supervisor/ Foreman, Skilled


operatives and unskilled labour depends upon the approved construction program and
site progress.

10. Material Requirement

11. House Keeping


All work places where any site operatives are working will be cleaned from scrap
materials derived from their work, ensuring clean and healthy work environment as well
as to maintain free access and egress in the event of an emergency. Waste removal will
happen in two stages.

 Refer to waste management details.

12. Control of Health Hazards


Implementation of Health & Safety procedures and checks shall be done as per contract
agreement and the approved site HSE plan. The safety officer shall carryout the
necessary routine inspections.

 Risk Controls: Risk assessment and their controls are carried out for each activity
and enclosed within the detailed section. Each Risk assessment is attached along
with their corresponding detailed method statements.
 All personnel should comply with site HSE Plan.

 Adequate HSE control measures should be provided as required in the Risk
Assessments.
 All personnel should attend Site Safety Induction.
Every site operative must use the required job specific PPE

13. Training
Tradesmen performing the any activity will be experienced technicians. If deemed
necessary specific team/Individuals will undergo further training and awareness
programs for this activity by the Project/QA-QC Departments. Toolbox talks will
provide general training and awareness for each activity and also in health & safety
matters and precautions
14. QA / QC Documentation
QA/QC forms shall be used to verify and maintain quality throughout the project as
per the approved Project Quality Plan. Checklist and ITP would be used to ensure that
all activities are carried out as per contract requirements and approved method
statement.

• Do not climb through beams, use access ladders instead.

approved HSE Plan.
• Regular cleaning (throughout the work and before and after of each
shift) and removal of wastes and scrap materials from the work area to
the designated collection points and storages in order to create a safe
working environment.
• Responsible engineer must ensure the work area is safe prior to
deployment and instruction to work.
• Provide adequate instructions for the safe use and maintenance of PPE,
safe manual handling and ensures prompt compliance during the
housekeeping works with adequate supervision.
• Provide appropriate hand gloves, respiratory protection, overalls and
other personnel protective equipment to the workers.
