ACT 3312 - Research Methods 2022 July
ACT 3312 - Research Methods 2022 July
1. “Having followed ACT 3312 – Research Methods course in Semester V, course participants are
having some concerns relating to the preparation of research proposal for the research project
that is due to be conducted in their Semester VII. Some concerns are about the choice between
basic/pure research and applied research, and some others are about the research process.”
i. Explain the expected outcomes of a basic/pure research and an applied research project, and
to whom the outcomes of each type of research are useful.
(06 Marks)
ii. Explain the process of identifying relevant gaps in establishing a research problem for basic/
pure research and an applied research project.
(06 Marks)
iii. Derive a research problem for basic/pure research and an applied research project based on
the gaps identified in (ii) above and identify research questions.

v. Describe under which circumstances a population should be used in collecting data for a
research project and instances where a sample becomes a valid alternative for using data
from the population (census).
(04 Marks)
vii. Explain how a researcher can customize different data collection methods to suit quantitative
and qualitative research.
(06 Marks)
viii. Briefly explain the role of descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients and regression
estimations in analysing quantitative data collected for a research project.

2. “Carrying out a comprehensive literature review provides the foundation for any research
project. At the next stage, especially in conducting qualitative research, the data collection needs
to be very carefully planned and executed. Finally, handling the language for the precise
communication of the ideas is a challenge to a researcher.”
i. Describe the purpose of undertaking a literature review and explain how research articles
could be selected in carrying out a literature review.
(10 Marks)
ii. In your opinion, how could a qualitative researcher select interviewees for the study and
how to decide the suitable number of interviews to be conducted.
(10 Marks)

iii. In a qualitative study, there is no clear division into separate neat time frames for data
collection and analysis, instead there may be an overlap between the two. Further, the initial
analysis helps to shape the direction of subsequent data collection. Comment on the above
elaborating on the integrative nature of data collection and analysis in qualitative research.
(10 Marks)
iv. Elaborate on the different ways of identifying a suitable theory for a research study.
(10 Marks)
v. Explain steps that could be followed by a researcher to ensure the adoption of ‘good’
academic writing practice in a research proposal and dissertation/research project.
